I didn't care for it, I had hope and he said the right things coming in.
We can excuse injuries maybe for 1 year. But we had enough on the roster to cover that this year.
You can tell he has lost control of the team, and defensively it is about as bad as it gets.

There was a point I wanted him to have a 3rd year, I am no longer there. I hate not having hope in March. And here we are again.

Here’s a very simple exercise… Go back and watch Pope’s introductory press conference, and listen word for word what he says, and then simply apply it to the results up to this point, and you tell me that this hasn’t been a complete failure.

Pope in his own words, nothing else!

I was on board with the 3rd year but it's like..........we need more talent and where is that in year 3? No where to be found.

There is nothing that makes me think year 3 will be better than years 1 and 2. If anything, I'm leaning towards it being worse.

year 1 we kind of gave him a pass having to assemble a brand new team in a short period of time. Sadly year 1 might be his best team at UK when it’s all said and done

I was surprised but then watched film of his offense and read about the respect other coaches had for his system, which is an NBA style system. I really wasn't swayed either way by the pep rally but had conceded that he was worth a shot. I really thought his style would appease a lot of fans that only care about exciting offense. And yes, there's a bunch of those...but I was always a bit concerned with his defensive approach.

His first season, given the short time to put a team together as well as injuries, was not bad and I do think the system appeased a lot of people. We all pretty much agreed that he overachieved and that we'd love to see that offense with better "dudes."

Then it appeared that Pope killed it in the portal and brought in a respectable freshman class. We were all excited about the roster, even though many of us saw the lack of depth at PG. The class was a top 5ish class of frosh and portal guys. So, Pope did good on paper, minus PG depth.
That PG depth became an issue immediately, with Lowe going down in the blue/white televised practice

The day we had been waiting for rolled around...preseason #1 Purdue in an exhibition game at Rupp. Man. we looked unstoppable against a really good team, even without a true PG. Purdue played their starters for a huge number of minutes, btw. But yes, it was just an exhibition.
Then G'Town, another exhibition game and we looked terrible. But hey, it was just an exhibition game, right? Still loots of hope for the season. We rest Lowe for a few games...

Season rolls around and we looked pretty good for the first couple of games, then a short road trip to play Little Brother and we looked really bad out manned everywhere in that game. After the game, Pope eludes to something happening in the locker room before the game. Clearly, we had a problem and that problem is the one this team has had all season long...whatever it is. But we still had a PG, albeit, a banged up one.. and a good showing from DA. We played decent for about 10 minutes but our defense disappeared for the rest of the game and we looked out manned, badly. Still, there was potential, just very disappointing to lose the way we did, to of all teams, UL.. But, we might still have a PG1

The season was very young and the team struggled against decent competition. Chemistry? Something happened before the UL game. We still don't know what it was. It was clear that something was very wrong with this team and we suffered some beatdowns and a close one with UNC.

We clamored that JQ was a world beating beast and debated when he'd play. We hoped that we would be much better when the beast got to play. Sure enough, JQ comes in and we beat a good St. John's team on a neutral court in Catlanta and killed them on the boards. Pretty good ballgame and things looked a "little better".

But the roller coaster ride wasn't over and neither were our injury problems. JQ goes back down, Kam goes down, Lowe is done for the season, Noah misses a few games, Oweh took a while to get going after a preseason turf toe injury...What else am I forgetting?

Bottom line, injuries and continuity have really hurt this team but I think it's more than that. I think this team has chemistry problems and has all along. Not sure what the fix is for it.

But, I do think it sucks for Pope to have such a short leash with all the injuries and chemistry problems happen with some teams. Yes, we expect better than the product we've put on the floor this season but I don't think Pope can be blamed for all of it. Ultimately, it's on him but the roster is not bad...not as bad as the product anyway.

I think there are things he has to do better but injuries, continuity and chemistry are big deals and it's hard to put all of that at Pope's feet after one disappointing season. To me, he has at least next year to right the ship and frankly, I'm optimistic that he can do that. Still not sure he's THE man for the job but I don't see firing him this soon either. My biggest concern is defense, honestly. His system will score points but we haven't seen consistently good defense from him yet, although at the end of last season, we weren't bad on d.

He's got another year so lets get behind him and the team going forward and see what he can do with a healthy team that doesn't refuse to play together. This one has done just that. I'm not sure any coach could fix this team. He should know the chemistry problem and we can only hope our injury luck improves. So, bring some guys back, add some new ones..maybe a defensive minded assistant... and lets lace em up next season before we throw Pope under the bus. If we look like this again, we move on.

One last thing...I'm not a fan of living or dying with outside shooting. We've gotta have both...inside and outside scoring. His system relies heavily on shooting, as does most of college bball. But every team will have off nights shooting the ball.

I was disappointed but willing to give him a chance because most people seemed all in. Last season was probably the first time in years this fanbase, including myself was deeply connected with UK basketball. This season started off promising with a win that didn’t even count, then we got hit with a big freight train of reality

Here it is, for anyone interested ... very difficult, if not impossible, to NOT be enthused and optimistic that evening:

I remember making a joke that I’d rather hire the actual Pope than Mark Pope. I was not happy with it and didn’t understand how we went from Scott Drew to Mark Pope so fast, and felt we didn’t even try to reach out to other qualified coaches. Zero NCAAT wins for an incoming UK coach was wild.

with that said, I hopped on board because it was out of my hands and he was “one of us.” Regardless of your feelings on any of it, that presser was masterful and got many of us to buy in.

If Pope was as masterful as that presser, we wouldn't being having this discussion.

I get your sentiment ... but it appears your immediate reaction was "shocked and a bit upset." To my view, that is telling. I felt pretty much the same way.
I was a bit upset too. But after the pep rally I was like “Screw it. Let’s go.”

And there were flashes of great coaching that first year.

My biggest fear was recruiting. And that’s turned out to be correct.

I hate it. I wanted him to work. I really did.

The hire never made sense because it was legitimately weird how we went from Scott Drew, Hurley and then Pope… Why? Did Mitch Barnhart call anyone else? Did the man call dozens of coaches only for him to settle on Pope? It never made sense. Even Todd Golden sitting at a pretty mediocre 2nd season at Florida made more sense than freaking Pope.

I’m half convinced the man hired Pope because he knew it would break up the fanbase into a civil war over “good Christian man” Mark Pope. He knew there would be idiots who blindly support him because he’s a big ole goofball which some people adore. People think that another bad season will ruin Pope, but I don’t agree. There’s plenty of people willing to give him all the time in the world because he’s apparently the opposite of Cal, therefore he must be a really good guy.

Very much happy with the hire. Was stoic about his 5 out offense. Admittedly had no clue about his porous defense though. Thought he would really recruit well with the KY brand behind him and a fun exciting offense that top notch players would love playing in. But he can’t attract **** and he has quickly abandoned 5 out. His defense sucks even worse now, his substitution patterns are the worst and probably the worst in game prep I have ever seen. The weight of this job crushed him quickly. I was dead wrong about him.

I was so angry I went to Mitch's house and dumped all his garbage cans, plants and outdoor furniture into his pool. Banana peels and crap floating everywhere.

I then went to the pep rally, and felt so much better I went home and made a fusilli CMP.

Very suspicious, I didn’t think he was ready for the job and the pressure that comes with it. I really lay the blame on Mitchy, it was a lazy hire and just another flop of a hire of his history.

The new guy will have to make the biggest decision of his tenure right off the bat.

Didn’t like it from the jump. Only reason he was even considered was because he played for UK. Anyone else with his resume is not even given a second thought.

Was worried about recruiting because he had not been going after top notch guys, and was told that was only because BYU was a strict Mormon school. Well no, it’s because he can’t recruit top notch guys.

UK is not the place for OJT, and they are paying for it right now.

I was very disappointed when the announcement was made. I bought in within about a week, thinking the UK bump could help him get recruits. It didn't. And he's a considerably worse Xs and Os guy than I thought.

Blank and confused doesn’t do it justice. I was blank because I’ve never heard of Mark Pope the coach. I knew Mark Pope 1996 championship.

I was blank and pissed. I’m still blank and pissed.

Pope is like fixing a water leak with some kind of temporary sealant. It’ll hold for awhile( Duke win) then it will start leaking after a little while(last years blowouts) eventually it will completely bust open and flood everything like it did in the beginning(this season and next)

fix the problem correctly

My initial reaction was insanely pi$$ed. I remember getting on here the night the news broke and begging people in Lexington to riot. Was hoping for a Greg Schiano/Tennessee type situation. I rolled my eyes at the presser as it was obvious that Mitch and the university were taking advantage of the rabid nature of the fanbase. I took the dUKe win at face value knowing fully well they were the much better team and we stole one. Also collectively rolled my eyes when the excuse makers talked about how little time he had to build a roster and blah, blah, blah. Thought it genuinely curious that only one player followed from BYU. Then spent the majority of the rest of that season and all of this one wondering how in the absolute hell Mark Pope could honestly be the basketball coach at UK. It's maddening.

First reaction, I was stunned, underwhelmed, confused and very worried.

After his press conference, I was stoked and figured my initial reaction was hasty.

After he put the roster and staff together on the quick and beat duke, Gonzaga, UT and Florida, I was convinced we had a diamond in the rough that still needed some time to adjust.

Now, I believe my first reaction was correct, but I'm still very confused at how Pope is able to get these teams to beat good/great teams, but he can't motivate them to sustain that level of play.

I'm also confused at how he refuses to see how his sub patterns are so bad and kill momentum.

I'm also, also confused at the roster he put together and how he thought it fit his style of play and why he is so bad at recruiting.

Who knows, maybe he kills it next year, but I doubt it. I predict another year where he beats great teams, but loses to bad teams and still comes out the other end with 10 losses. The job and the SEC are too much for him.

I thought someone was trolling at first.
The consensus seems to be most were immediately surprised and variably disappointed in the hire, but being supportive of Pope and the program, they quickly accepted it with a positive attitude ... hoping for the best. Most all here seem to agree that next year will be pivotal for Pope. Recruiting is key.

Can we answer both? My hope, of course was a Bruce Pearl, Billy Donavan, Jay Wright type hire. When Pope was announced, I was shocked and a bit upset. Then the annoucement at Rupp, his excitement from former teammates got me kind of hyped. That has slowly whittled away over some of last season and most of this season until the excitement is completely gone and now wondering how we get out of this mess intact.
Yes... outstanding post that captures my sentiments. When his hiring was announced, I was like "Whaaaatt???" Then he went on to a historic win at the introductory press conference.

Last season was OK considering the circumstances. This season has been a massive disappointment apart from the win over Cal/Arky and the regular season sweep over the Vols.

Not seeing any reason to optimistic for next year....

I was not happy at all initially when it leaked out he was the choice. Didn’t think he was qualified enough and thought Mitch should’ve offered 7-8 other guys first. I calmed down over the weekend and was on board after the press conference. Maybe it was just refreshing hearing how Pope spoke about UK, the fans, and just turning a new chapter

Last season had its ups and downs but there were multiple injuries and Pope was limited on time with being hired so late. He did the best he could given the circumstances so I was willing to give him a pass for Year 1

This season, hs recruiting and how he’s handled some of the media combined together has been a dumpster fire. I’m firmly in the group of next season being make or break

It blew my mind that we "had" to dip so far down to get a guy who'd never won a tournament game, never won a conference, never won a conference tournament, and objectively wouldn't have ever gotten a half a second's consideration for the job if he weren't an alum. I definitely wasn't excited and had a "well, I hope he can prove he belongs" attitude.

The pretty good roster he assembled in a small amount of time and the pretty good results (especially considering all the injuries) in year one had me thinking he looked promising. Surely, seeing the green light guys like Jaxson and Brea had to put up shots and the brand prestige and money we had would bring in superior talent, which was all it looked like he needed to take year 1's model and turn it into a FF type team. But then he whiffed on top portal talent, can't bring in any high school guys, and the roster that sacrificed offensive firepower in the name of increased defense, toughness, and rebounding is still subpar at defense, rebounding, and toughness.
Dynamics have changed. The potential candidates will increase simply from not following Calipari. The next coach will have an easier transition and could be setup for legendary status should they succeed.
