Led his team to a WS victory by hitting .385 with seven RBI (whole team only scored 25). That team was the '67 Cardinals.

I remember Fisher, but only vaguely. I remember Frank Lary as a Yankee-killer when he pitched for the Detroit Tigers.

Don Wilsoin and JR Richard bith sad stories . Both would fit right in now throwing smoke.JR threw a slider that should have been illegal .

His fastball should have been illegal also, I had to hit at both pitches.
No one threw harder than Lee Smith.

Correct. I actually saw him play for them in KC along with Bob Cerv. My aunt and uncle lived there in the 50's and 60's and we always took in a game while on vacation. KC had some pretty good players, just not at the same time.
Municipal Stadium was a great place to watch a game.

I'm not sure it's possible to count all of the times Cerv went from KC to the Yankees and back again. He shared an apartment with Maris and Mantle in Queens (I think) during the 1961 season while the two raced for 60.

I once looked at a list of the pitchers against whom Maris hit his 61, and I remember most of them as damn good. So I don't think that expansion was the reason for all the homers in 1961. (Mantle and Maris were not the only AL sluggers that year; Jim Gentille set a club record for the Baltimore Orioles with 46).

While they raced for 60 I was all excited with the news that National league baseball would return to New York. They had an owner (Payton), a general manager (Weiss), and a manager (Casey Stengel). For me THAT was 1961.

I think that was the year JG hit 2 grand slams in one game.

Always seemed to be involved with trades for star players including Maris and he never became one himself. Played for a lot of teams.
I remember Fat Jack Fischer well. Mets fan since 1962. He was a starter for them several years in the 60s. I also played against him when I played in Atlantic Collegiate League and he was the manager of the Mt Vernon team.

I was a Yankees fan because I started following baseball in 1958, just after the Dodgers and Giants left NYC. Beside, the Yankees were winners, and I wanted to root for a winner. (I was 7.) I did watch Mets' games on TV and listen to them on radio; I remember a newsman calling them "hapless" when they lost their ninth straight at the start of their inaugural season. Casey Stengel made a remark along the lines of, "it's bad to have a losing streak at the start of the season because that means you might lose 162 games, which would be a record in the National League, at least."

Since this thread has taken a turn toward the pre-69 Mets, let me share a bit of 62 Mets trivia. The 62 Mets pitching staff had more complete games (43) than wins (40)! My how the game has changed.

I think that in the 1957-1958 World Series' between the Milwaukee Braves and the New York Yankees. Fred Haney, manager of the Braves, never used a relief pitcher. But that may be an overstatement. Casey Stengel, managing the Yankees did use relievers; he used starter Bob Turley as a middle reliever several times with spectacular results. But Turley was never the same again.

Casey always used relievers Camden, Joe Page, Ryan Duran and Luis Arroyo to name a few.
Food for thought..my dad caught a young Nolan Ryan with the Mets throwing 100 on the first radar guns, he used to tell my brothers and I Ryan Duran threw harder.

And what was worse about Duren is that he wore thick glasses and so the batter was never sure that Duren knew where he was throwing the ball! Yes, Casey did use relief pitchers, and thanks for reminding me that Arroyo was with the Yanks both 1960 (Stengel's last year as manager) and 1961. Arroyo did a tremendous job backing up Whitey Ford on the way to his 25-4 record in 1961; purists thought, in fact, that it was took away from Ford to have an effective reliever so that Ford didn't have to pitch complete games. My recollection is that Arroyo was a two-inning pitcher

I remember when Tommy Davis and Ken Boyer became Mets.
Dennis Ribant, the diminutive one.

Davis and Boyer were excellent in their prime; but the way things were designed, the Mets got players only when they were virtually done with their careers.

Boyer was my favorite player while on the Cards. I still can't believe they traded him.
I remember in 1964 when the Cards beat the Yanks....and in a critical game / situation, Boyer hit a Grand Slam!

Answering someone else's comment: Cards winning in 1967 and one man hit 385 and had 7 RBI's: Brock?....didn't goggle.

Also can't believe we lost the next year after being up 3-1 ....Gibson's game #1 was the BOMB!

Dr Strangeglove, Dick Stewart had a cup of coffee with the Mets[/QUOTE

Greatest day ever for an 11 year old playing PAL ball in Queens: double header at YS in ‘61. M & M each hit 2 out of sight in game 1. In game 2 Maris hits 2 more, Mantle 1 more. Maris makes at least 3 amazing 1 handed catches falling into the right field stands. Best part of the day was pregame batting Clinic for PAL all-stars under the stands by Yogi.

I believe that Roger Maris still holds the high school record for most return touchdowns in one game with 4.
