Manny being Manny is getting old in Beantown. He said the other day that Boston doesnt deserve him. This from a guy getting $20 mil a year. They have won their championships - he was definitely key to that, but enough is enough. Not to mention the fact that Bay is producing just as much as Manny without the protection in the lineup.

What I dont get is the Dodgers trading for Manny and not giving up an OF - now they have Kemp, Ethier, Pierre and Andruw - who should all be starting somewhere, we maybe besides Andruw.

Pirates made out nicely, getting 4 prospects for Bay.

I dont buy all the "Manny being Manny" **** the media trys us pile on us. The fans in Boston love the guy. I think its more to do with the structure of the organization if anything. The big dicks in the organization do whats best for their pocket books and they do not care about the so-called "franchise players." I mean its not the first time they have done this. See Nomar Garciaparra and Pedro Martinez. But I not faulting them in any form, because what it all comes down to is the fact thats a business. Oh well good luck to Manny.

And before you say "well, Manny is clutch" I agree, but they just unloaded salary and a headache for what looks to be equal production. Who is to say Bay wont be clutch? It is not like he has had many opportunities to get a key hit against a big pitcher on a national stage in Pitt.</p>

If he was such a distraction how did they make it work for two titles and now all of a sudden it doesn't work? If you are Theo Epstein or Terry Francona you make it work. That's why they pay you what they do. Who in that line up is going to protect Big Papi now? Bay has only hit over 30 HR's twice in his career and only gone over 100 Rbi's twice. I don't like it one bit.

Bay is a great player, but that lineup is a lot less threatening without Manny in the middle of Ortiz, Lowell, Youkilis, and Drew. I think the Sox got the worst end of this deal; they gave up a Hall of Famer and two of their top young players. Pirates made out like champs in this getting three players ready to contribute in the majors and from what it seems a good young minor league pitcher. Seeing how Torre juggles the Dodgers OF will be interesting. Manny has to take a spot, so that leaves Kemp, Ethier, Pierre, and Andruw Jones battling for two spots. Kemp and Ethier deserve to start based on their talent, but Pierre and Andruw have such awful contracts the Dodgers don't want to be paying them that much to be pinch hitters.

My problem with the deal isn't so much what they got back, but what they gave up. I'm a big fan of Bay and he's a great player. But, they gave up a pitcher who was one of their top prospects and someone who was a good bullpen arm this year (and probably would've been a good rotation arm in the future) in Craig Hanson and Brandon Moss who filled in very well this year while Drew was hurt. Moss was also a top prospect I believe. Moss will step right in and be the Pirates starting LF, and Hansen will most likely be in their rotation out of spring training next year at the latest. Add that on top of losing Manny, and that is way too much to give up to just get Bay. What it boils down to is the Dodgers and Pirates took advantage of the Sox being so desperate to get rid of Manny.

Producing in Pittsburgh and producing in Boston are two largely different things. Like I said before, Jason Bay is a great player and I'm a big fan of his, but in that respect, he's unproven and therefore the lineup is not as scary with Bay protecting Ortiz. Ramirez is the best right handed hitter, and arguably best hitter, of our generation. I think Bay will ultimately be OK in Boston, but in my opinion, this deal takes them farther from being a World Series contender instead of taking them closer to being World Series contenders. Like I said elsewhere in this thread, my biggest problem with the deal is what the Sox gave up.

</p>Thats one thing people fail to mention. Manny can handle that Boston pressure day in and day out. We will have to wait and see with Bay. Manny is my favorite player in MLB and with him leaving is just making me pull for the Rays even more. <17> the Red Sox (except Papelbon).

things obviously weren't as bad, or the Red Sox were willing to put up with Manny more. Probably some of both. Just because Manny is a distraction now, doesn't mean that he was in 04. Or, he probably wasn't as much of one at the very least.

Like people have said, his act has gotten old and what we don't know is what else Manny was doing that the media didn't know about. It also seems like Manny was tired of Boston as well, I don't know why, probably for bitching at him.

At any rate, they actually may have a better shot at the WS now because they have a major distraction gone.</p>
