It’s worth noting that the Pirates have 10 offensive regulars, with Mangum being one of them. Amongst those regulars, Jake is essentially tied for 7th in OPS with Konnor Griffin (.736 vs. .732).
What makes that a big deal is that the Pirates are arguably the best offensive team in MLB. They are 2nd in runs, 2nd in team OPS, and 1st in team batting average. For comparison, last year the Rays were a Top 10-12ish team offensively….certainly punched above their payroll weight. But they weren’t great.
So, Jake is now confirmed to be essentially a Top 7-8 offensive player on any roster in MLB at this point. He’s going to play nearly every day until his body gives out…wherever he’s at. This year has thus far shaken off all remaining haters.
Also, Jake is an outstanding defensive outfielder. And a player who's contribution to the team can't be measured by stats alone. I never doubted he could do the job if he ever got the chance. I did doubt he'd ever get the chance with baseball being so analytics driven these days.
I guess when I was that age, I could summon that kind of energy on Saturdays during softball tournaments, but it seems like he lives life that way; which is impressive. He could be on my team if he hit .150; that **** is so good for the clubhouse and dugout.
Do the Pirates not have the water cooler shaped coolers?
Jake, the goal is to also (mainly?) get the female reporter in white!

He needs to catch up about 60 PAs over 3.1 per game to get included in the batting average stats. At Tampa he almost always batted low in the lineup which hurt, but he’s been leading off a lot and could get there if he keeps playing most days once Cruz is back
MLB really needs to look at adjusting that 3.1 number. It’s been that way forever, and with as much as platooning and injuries affect things, you’re only going to have 4-5 guys per team that qualify. Jake’s played in 75% of games, with one nagging injury that caused him to miss a few weeks, and they treat him and many others like their stats don’t count.
He’d be Top 5 in Batting Average in the NL if his AB’s qualified.
That trade was certainly productive for the Pirates, and it obviously didn’t hurt the Rays, at least this season.
Mangum just pinch hit in the top of the 6th. Flew out to left, first pitch swinging. He's now playing center field. Yankees currently winning 8-5 bottom of 6th.
It’s definitely a high number. Only 146 players qualify. Or less than 5 per team.
Mangum flied out to left field in 2nd at bat. Yankees still lead 8-5 top of 9th. We did see a fight between Santana of the Pirates and Cabellero of the Yankees. Benches cleared but pretty much a big nothing burger.
