It used to be helpful for your kids from a recruiting standpoint to post their stats, but thats no longer the case. Colleges aren't recruiting based on maxpreps numbers.

I have yet to come across a coach/school that doesn’t keep stats. The ones that aren’t posting stats aren’t doing so because they don’t take them. They don’t want someone to have a scouting advantage. That is it. All schools have record boards. If they didn’t keep stats, they wouldn’t be able to break those record.
I know several coaches that don't keep stats. Only time they take stats is if they know a kid had a special night...then they will go back and take stats off the film. Not uncommon at all. I think most football coaches have a stat guy on Friday night and use those "rough" numbers to enter something on Friday or Saturday (just to please the masses), but don't verify anything until they have taken stats off of the film.
Also, I would question the coaching practices in trying to gain a scouting advantage based on the other team's stats (rather than watching their film, which is available to all coaches in the hudl pool). Stats lie. Film doesn't.
Regardless, I am interested in why the NSAA cares if stats are reported or not? Scores make sense because they are needed for power point calculations. Why does the NSAA want stats? Is it for state records maybe?

NSAA is cooking these last 2 years between the mandatory shot clock and now mandatory stat entering. Pretty sure if your school has an agreement with HUDl that HUDl does the stat tracking for you but I could be wrong
Hudl does stats, but its not very accurate. Much like Hudl assist that breaks film down for you. There are errors included, which is fine if you are just trying to "check a box". But if the purpose of everyone reporting stats is to provide accurate information (record keeping), then Hudl isn't an acceptable form of stat keeping.
Last month the NSAA passed requiring baseball and softball teams to use GameChanger for the same purpose (stats, scores).
This will give radio, newspaper, media outlets, etc better accessibility to do their job and not hassle emailing/calling coaches to get stats. On the scouting front, if you watch film you’ll have an idea on opponent, but sometimes a kid gets hot in a stretch of games when they could be a below average shooter. Hardly any coach will watch every single game from their opponent so having the full arsenal of stats is a tool that will help a coach scout an opponent. Hudl can be utilized to break down opp stats even more, so it really comes down to how much effort a coach is willing to put into it as nothing is really “secret” anymore.
So you’re telling me the kids these coaches have, have no idea what their stats are?
Of course film is the best tool for scouting. But having data helps complete the picture you’re trying to paint. Someone isn’t getting stats and then just not watching film.
If it were more advantageous to scout without stats, then it shouldn’t be a big deal for those coaches to make them public then.
Football the coaches are a bit better, basketball it’s a mess. Baseball I’m sure was in the same boat, the stats are a scouting gold because you don’t get film on other teams.
The NSAA has an agreement with MaxPreps. I’m sure it’s a bit of a push from MaxPreps to get more traffic on the website.
I don't think coaches are withholding stats from Maxpreps to gain a scouting advantage. Maybe that was a thing back in the day, when film was harder to get. Don't share film and don't share stats, then try to ambush a team. I don't think that happens now, but I could definitely be wrong there.
I think coaches aren't entering stats into maxpreps because 1- teams play back to back nights in basketball pretty often and baseball more times than they don't. There aren't enough hours in the day, especially for a coach that doesn't teach (which is far more common now than it was 10 years ago). 2- Maxpreps is about the least user friendly website in the history of the world. 3- Teams play way more games than they used to. Its a lot of work during the season and it doesn't do anything for your team to keep them current. That's why you see several coaches enter everything at the end of the season. Also explains why football stats are kept more current than baseball and basketball. Football is playing once a week and 9-13 times all year. Baseball and Basketball are playing 25-30 games or so.

I have never been a fan of publicizing individual stats of a team sport. I feel that nothing good can come of it. My player that averages 19.5 points per game starts getting an unfair amount of public recognition because my best player is drawing a double team. My best player gets upset and starts shooting through the double team rather than simply finding his open teammate.
I kept stats, but didn't make them public until the season was over.

This back fired once on me
We were playing a team who’s coached posted stats and I had watched tons of film and knew they only had two kids who could score more than 5 a game
I told the head coach we should deny those two kids and let the others shoot specifically this one kid. The kid made his first 5 shots of the game!! The head coached was pissed at me and said so much for your scouting report lol
We did go on to a state championship that year lol
I know most, if not all coaches keep stats. Not just for record keeping but also for player efficiency ratings. Any coach with a good head on his/her shoulders obviously wants to put their best players on the field of play that are going to contribute. Some coaches even use a method to determine effectiveness even when stats aren’t required. For example, a lot of role players do things really well for teams that don’t show up in stats.
Our football/basketball coach does this as well.
Team sport. Doesn't like individuals constantly looking at stats.
Also is so scared of other teams getting an advantage that everything must be kept a secret. Seems to work.
We've had girls going for stats and nothing else. The team winning is second to their individual stats.

In today's world, a large majority of schools have Hudl assist. While it's not perfect, it is what it is. Teams get every film they want. I always laugh at coaches that don't want to exchange film, or in today's world why more basketball people don't use the film pool on Hudl. For the last 10 years, we've had every film we have wanted of an opponent, and for the last 5 we've had the full breakdown of every film of every opponent that we've wanted. Shot charts, stats, ect. We watch film now focusing on sets, OOB plays, ect and not worrying about the stats side. That's done by Hudl. And I've worked in C-1 or C-2 schools over that span.
This move by the NSAA has been praised all day by the media. The people you want at your games and covering your school and kids. The media folks, and I'll say some directors of AAU programs, like being able to check in on kids via stats and the media. Helping the media be prepared weather it be a broadcast or an article isn't something we should frown upon.
You can live tag in hudl, however, the program is very inconsistent. And hudl does not always talk nice with maxpreps. There are some really neat stat tracking programs out there but they can be expensive for schools with a tight budget. Find a math teacher who loves football and trade stats for food, etc

And in today's world over 75% of schools in Nebraska have the package that includes assist. That comes from conversations with Hudl and the cost our school pays for their services.
I agree most have it You almost have to because they tied storage to it and you can not even get through a season without it Its unreal how much this has went up in the last ten years From a total of $2000 for best service to 12k
Hudl has become an insane monopoly, and if you don't have it you've set your school back decades. The pricing is out of this world.
This move is to help us in the media. We can cover your kids better if we go into a game knowing more about them.

There's also little or no downside to it.

I remember when I first started coaching you call the scores in and give all the stats, score by quarter, etc. Now half the games are no stats or “No Score Reported”. I guess times change…
