Still amazing to me we have some real fans that expect UK boards to be content and happy with Calipari and the state of the program. Could you be more tone deaf and lost? This is BBN, fans of Kentucky. 9-16, St. Peter’s, mounting losses to rivals, Kansas just won a title and took over all time wins, Duke and UNC are way out ahead of us right now. Notice not even the usual rival fans come to this board much anymore. They can clearly see taking shots at UK isn’t fun because this isn’t the UK they’re intimidated by.

But we should just “follow the team” and be grateful for Calipari because, well, just because.

You guys make absolutely no sense whatsoever but keep on pounding that drum. Why?

I don't get it. People that find trolling funny, are not funny. Oh, you're saying something I know you don't believe. No turn of phrase. No clever point of view. For two hours. Hilarious.

I've stopped trying to get it and skip this annual episode. I guess I shouldn't be too critical. I'm trying to remember, there's a lot of content out there. Not everything has to be for the smart people like me.
I think its like anything else in comedy. Its never funny when its forced and predictabe which is what that show was plain and simple. But they probably sat and giggled about it all night the night before planning it.

Either they can't see or won't see. Cal is not to be questioned in their minds for some reason.

I always, always want UK to win. However, doesn't mean I cant see problems or things that are not working.

Cal came to UK hungry and motivated. Felt slighted and overlooked. Talked and worked like someone who wanted to prove himself.

Once he got a title and the HOF, everything changed. Not overnight, but slowly.

These last 2 years he sounds like a completely different coach. 9 mil a year will keep him going thru thr motions, but it's not even close to the same imo.

Hadn’t thought of it till just now but…..when you consider the size of Cal’s ego and their past history, I wouldn’t be too surprised if Cal tried to coach till 80 just to keep Rick from having a chance to come back
That may have meant to be tongue in cheek, but I have watched and listened to Cal for 30 years, and I'm pretty sure that he thinks about Pitino in every decision he makes.
Someone made a comment in 2015 that his team was a throwback to the Pitino days of deep benches, and right then and there, he fumed and decided he would never rely on more than 7 players again.
Regardless of what u think of Pitino off court, he could still step in and turn this program back into a dynasty again - Cal knows it, and will stubbornly hang on no matter how bad it gets to try and prevent that.

You pumpers get you want. Cal will crash this program into a wall

Silly myth. Nobody here pumps Cal except maybe one or two guys. You are making a big bad statement about.........two people on the internet. LOL! Lots here know they can't change it, so they wisely choose to use their short life to be positive and make the best of whatever situation, Then there are the dweebs that waste their short life with bad energy. Clown show.

I could see him leaving after the 2023/24 season, after any of the following scenarios, mainly because he's already showing signs of dislike of the transfer portal and NIL programs, but also has some heat after these last two years:

Deep tourney run March 2023
Winning it all March 2024
Retire May 2024

Winning it all March 2023, whereas he may hang it up and not worry about another year.

Suck wind 2022/2023 or get bounced in first weekend again March 2023 (should probably hang it up because fans, including myself, will own stock in pitchforks).

There won't be a scenario where he'll be welcomed back by many fans if 2022/2023 isn't Elite 8 or better. Now he may come back, but there are a LOT of on-the-fence fans like myself that will be done with Calipari at UK if 2022/23 is a flop. Will he retire? No idea. But if he thinks the heat is bad after these last two years, just imagine how it will be in March 2023 if we flail in the tourney (or worse, don't make it).
For someone “on the fence “ you seem to vehemently defend Calipari. Just saying.

Nope, it's only what you want to see. For those that have already bailed on him and UK ball, anyone that doesn't immediately express the same can only be a defender. I've seen people respond with completely innocuous comments be immediately labeled as some kind of Calipari suckup. I've seen random people get pounced on as idiots, morons, up Cal's butt, "must be Brad", shell accounts propping up Cal, and all of the like. It's the way of the world here - if you aren't here repeating explicit hate for Calipari, you MUST be a Cal lover (which is not always the case).

I've said 20+ times that I am at my last straw with the guy, but will give it 1-2 more years (as per the below layout). If we're halfway through the next season and we're sucking wind, it may be sooner that I give up hope. And for those long time posters that have good memories, there was a time from around 2017 through 2020 that I was always bitching about what I thought was a stupid recruiting method in the 1 and done. I literally hated it with a passion and was ready for Cal to go long ago. But then last year he had a team that had some veterans thanks to the transfer portal. Yes, I know, 15 seed, Shapre none-and-done, blah blah blah, but the team he put together this past year was a sign (to me) that maybe he was turning the corner on this whole one and done schtick that I was tired of years ago. No, he didn't "fool" me (yet), and no, I'm not "drinking the Kool-Aid" or "buying his used car". I just chose to give him a little more time to settle into this new recruiting that all coaches are dealing with (NIL, transfer portal).

But if 2022-23 isn't Elite 8 or better, I'm done.

Can I be more clear, or do you still want to label me as a "vehement Cal defender"?

The fact there are still Calipari defenders blows my mind. I think some of them are trolls, the rest have bought Calipari’s used-car.
I spend more time defending myself around here than anything. People shouldn't have to defend their opinions, because opinions are not facts - just someone's thoughts. That I'm a little more patient than others doesn't mean I'm a troll or bought into anything Cal is selling.

You just label anyone that isn't bitching and moaning as incessantly as others around here as a "must be a Cal defender!", which may be the case for the usual suspects you know and love (Ed, bass, maybe 2-3 others). People don't even have to be explicit to catch this label from the all-on-board haters - just be a little more patient and not so reactionary and BAM - "must be a Cal Defender" is thrown on that person.

However, I'd bet that there are more people that are in their final wait and see holding pattern on Calipari than there are staunch Defenders and Haters combined. In other words, my gut says that most fans are in fact getting tired of the Calipari show, but are holding out one more year of hope that he shows up and makes us proud UK fans. If not, this board will be a disaster (mostly filled with people screaming "I TOLD YOU SO!!!").

I can tell you this - if 2022-23 is a failure, I won't be here commiserating with the rest of you. I'll just separate myself from UK basketball until Calipari hits the road, much like I did with BCG, and that includes tinkering around this place, because honestly I won't give a **** about UK ball after another bad year until we have something to be excited about.

LOL, I meant no offense. That is a totally reasonable post . I was on the fence for those years also . I didn’t really criticize or defend him and I certainly didn’t argue with anyone about him during that time because I had mixed feelings about the situation. Granted , there was a lot less discussion about him back then .
In real life I can have discussions about politics, race, and religion with people of totally opposite views and we still remain good friends. It’s kinda of hard to convey things on a message board sometimes without seeming offensive. There are some real looneys on this site but I’ve never considered you as unreasonable. I was just curious.

Calipari, by any measurable standard of what should be demanded by any organization / program similar to UK, probably should have been fired after 9-16. Definitely should have been fired following it up with losing the all time wins and St. Peters. There’s really no debate about it.

You can’t lose to your rivals, some in embarrassing fashion, slip behind programs like Kansas, and flat out look awful when it matters for years now and stay the UK coach. Calipari does not deserve to be the UK Coach next season. I don’t know what some of you think this is, but that’s not how it works. You don’t get one more year after every embarrassing season to infinity.

The contract is the only thing keeping him in place. If it weren’t for that, he’d be gone and he knows that. I couldn’t imagine actually thinking he needs “another year”. For what? He could go to the elite 8 and would follow it up with God knows what. The guy isn’t really that elite of a scout and recruiter anymore. And it’s volatile season to season. He’s done. He went to war with Nike, lost his WWW connection. People don’t like him and so that’s ballgame.

**And if there was ANY chance , at all, that he could even closely resemble the guy he was in 2010, and of course we’d want him to stay. Calipari is not like Self, Roy, K, etc. He was a behind the scenes connections guy that lost his connections. He’s not really a basketball coach.

It’s pretty much over people. Short of some crazy luck.

This sums up Caliparis former strengths better than anything I’ve heard .

this strikes me as a coach who knows he has lost a significant portion of the fanbase. I suspect Mitch Barnhart has been involved as of late on these actions too

There’s no question. One day he’s taking shots the best day he’s looking for ways to pretend to care.

He’s on his way out. He’s not doing anything these days except waiting on whatever number is in his head for the buyout. I suspect he’ll settle somewhere near 15 million in two seasons.
