This is Cal's most experienced team since 2015. I had hoped more experience would offset lesser talent but that's not been the case. Cal needs elite talent to win.

this 100% and what I said all week after the *** kicking by Utah.

A group of fans on this board don’t want to believe it. But Cal doesn’t win unless he has elite level teams.

We've been saying this almost from day one. I honest to God feel Cal was relieved the day he was hired at UK....that his focus could be on selling his brand to elite kids, and not so much having to spend a lot of time teaching them.

All are valid points
Who’s fault is that? If they expected Whitney to be a star someone evaluated poorly. That guy is not taking over any college game. Also, he has non-elite freshman. That’s Cal’s and his staff fault. Got to recruit better. Lastly, Richards and EJ aren’t developing as we would expect and we have no post presence. Again, Cal has to take the blame.
What would be the small change Matt speaks of to salvage this season? I don’t see it. These players are who they are.

Well, I suppose he could be right, since he guessed about 15 things that he thinks are wrong. Surely he can get one or two correct if he makes enough guesses. It’s just easy for someone who never played the game to come up with this stuff.

Yeah, gotta agree with you, man. Particularly when Matt wrote "need ANOTHER star". He definitely doesn't know what he's talking about. Because, clearly, he thinks UK already has at least one star caliber player. This UK team has zero. Absolutely no "star" caliber talent.

Unless Calipari rolls up his damn sleeves and keeps them there, and by that I mean really get focused on coaching a basketball team instead of just having one, this will be an embarrassment of a season. We know the man is capable of doing it. My opinion is the same as others: he expects the UK program to be a mega-machine that will allow him to simply harvest a crop of ripe enough talent each year - no longer energetic for ripping the dirt open.

The sophomores we have coming back are only back because they underperformed as freshman. Add a bunch of freshman that are not elite and that doesn't fix the problem.. Herro having a year better than expected didn't help the situation. Like always Cal's team is lacking shooters.

How about pressing and guarding the inbounds play? How about crashing the boards? How about feeding the damn post and drawing some fouls? How about guarding the perimeter?

If you press you're guarding 94 feet instead of halfcourt, that takes a lot of awareness and coordination to not give up a layup line. We don't have that with our guys.

I'm sure Cal has instructed them to rebound, however he recruited soft, ineffective big men

See #2

This would be our best bet to turn it around, who knows if he can get the guards to stay in front of their guy.

No inside game no outside game no defense no rebounding. Constantly turning it over. They just can't play it is what it is

Nice comment on Herro (roll eyes). Though the irony does merit some truth, providing a gloriously messed up summary of our affairs, having a player exceed expectations, a detriment to the overall. Geeze, what has happened ??

Matt Jones is talented.

He can see the future.

Yes it is likely the next coach won't have the 2010-2015 run. I would bet he could exceed the 2016. - 2019 twenty percent winning percentage in the NCAA tournament against the Power 5.

Help is on the way with our recruits next year - PROVIDED we land a really talented big like Brown, Bancheros or someone else who is just as good. As Cal has said time and again, 'A team with no inside presence is a bogus team'.

A few things

1.) none of our freshman are elite

2.) none of our returning players are elite.

3.) we have a big fat zero in post presence

4.) we can’t shoot

5.) most can’t defend

So we can keep crying and saying Cal needs elite players to win. That may be true, but as of right now, this team has absolutely nothing.

Win what, a title?

Lol, who has won a title without elite players? At least college level elite?

It is the dumbest argument ever.

Cal has to have great players or he can't win...give me a break.

I agree with Matt’s post. Cal is still as good as any coach in the country year in and year out, but this team does have some flaws.

IMO, the biggest flaws are missing a good wing scorer and a good post scorer. I think Whitney has underperformed significantly, and I think Cal missed on his top big men targets.

Matt is financially interested in pumping sunshine up everyone's *** and keeping the train full. The less people interested in keeping up with this team means less people listening to the radio show, lower ratings, and ultimately less $$$ in his pocket.
He doesn’t want to be negative when he runs for public office. You can make a lot of people mad in Ky but better not upset UK fans or you will only get 10000 votes from U of L fans.

Not a knock on Cal, but how do we know it will be worse? No one knows if it’ll be better or worse. With the turnover in kids leaving and transferring, it’s changed the game and there are really no good teams anymore. Recruit a team that stays together and is solid, you don’t know.

Not much drawing charges either, blocking out more for rebounds instead of relying on athletic ability, not seeing much of that either.

We’re a Wiseman/Stewart away from being a 1 loss team at worse. Not sure what happened with Stewart but Wiseman was ours until Penny’s punk *** opened the checkbook. Same song and dance next year if we can’t land an elite big man.

Whitney and Juzang are almost non factors at this point, and if you're not going to use all your scholarships, you can't afford to have any recruiting "misses".

I think that some good multi year players like Derek Willis and Dominique Hawkins to fill out the ENTIRE allotment of scholarships would make a huge difference on this team.
