They'll let him recruit who he wants, unlike Auburn.

What sucks is that if we had kept Moorhead, he would have sucked in 2020 and then we could have hired Malzahn, with Shrader running the offense (and ultimately Ty Keyes), and get back to doing what MSU does in football (running the ball). Instead we've bet it all on Cohen's dream of being a pass-happy offense.

We will see.

How many straight bowls again (including the orange)? What type of offense did Jackie run when we were successful? What about Bellard's teams that beat Bama?

Innovative running game, mobile QB and good defense. That's what we do. If we get lucky on a QB that can also throw it on an elite level, we can rise up even further. Commit to that ****, so we can consistently recruit to it.

But alas, we're all in on the Air Raid. Has anybody thought about what we'll do once Leach leaves? Rebuild for another 3-4 years?

How many wins against Bama? Wins against LSU? Trips to Atlanta?

And our bowl streak is only a streak because we backdoored in on grades when Vandy beat Tennissee that year. And boy we looked like a great team then when we won with a last second field goal against Miami Ohio. But lets just keep on keeping on. I don't know about you but lets try something that might just result in us beating Alabama more than once every couple of decades. The game has been moving away from ground and pound for decades. Time to catch up.

About the same number as we’ll have doing things the new way.

Well then why is anybody complaining? Personally I would rather have made this change years ago when it was apparent the game was moving forward.

No one is saying we shouldn’t throw at all. We should just set it up off the run, like Mullen did. The opposite of Slophead and Leach.

Of course the biggest hindrance to us taking the next step is recruiting. So whatever helps us recruit the best is the scheme I want us to run.

Football is going to be exciting to watch next season. I'm am looking forward to the Air Raid in it's second season. The defense is going to good again. Keeping this staff together was huge!

Yeah we 17 the Sloppy Joe hire. But he does have just as many wins against LSU and Bama as Mullen did. This year Leach had so much rot to cut out and no spring or summer to do it with. If you don't understand what no spring and summer means with a new coach then you know nothing about football.

I only watched parts of a few NFL games last season. But, one of the things that I noticed is that multiple NFL teams throw the ball almost every down. One game (I can't even remember who was playing) but they had only thrown the ball 6 times or so going into the 4th quarter. I prefer the smashmouth style but Leach isn't the only one throwing the ball way more than running. I am willing to give the Leach system a shot and reconsider my preferences if it brings W's.

Well now Leach is recruiting on a national level instead of "Home by dinner", Mullen.

I think you will be happy next year. I see 8 wins on our schedule. And possibly VERY happy a year or two after that.

Leach seems to be targeting out of state for Qbs and WRs. We can get every other position in state. Give him a chance. It might just work if he's pulling in a top 10 Qb every couple years.

You're right. If he can get them consistently, then it will work. Just never been done before, but he's off to a great start. And if we will big, I'll be happy as anybody and will admit I was wrong.

Funny thing is most of the "rot" were Mullen players, and I'd guess they'd have been just fine had he stayed. Slophead turned them into rot. That's how bad he really was.

Bottom line that we all can agree on.....you have to have a hard *** at MSU. Guy that doesn't take ******** and knows thae value of development (from S&C to practice reps). Slophead had no clue. Here's a little known secret.....Croom didn't either. Yeah, Mr. Discipline himself.

You have to be a hard *** at any football team. Or do you think Saban is a lot like Mr. Rodgers?

He has a really good shot at landing that big time qb from Gordo, Alabama this year. He’s going to stack good quarterbacks and receivers here like we have never seen. The only thing I’m worried about offensively is the OL.

I meant harder than normal.

Plenty of coaches can afford to run a looser ship. Pete Carroll immediately comes to mind. Jimmy Johnson is another, so is Lane Kiffin. There are many ways to wield your authority, and some places need more discipline than others. I mean all Slophead had to do was actually punish players, and he would have been a LOT better.

Which has traditionally been the achilles heel for QBs here. Time after time I have seen MSU QBs do good things early in their career to simply become terrible as juniors and seniors because of crap OLs, mainly because of inconsistent recruiting. Kevin Fant and Derrick Taite come to mind. Dak almost suffered the same fate, but obviously he and Bear/Ross/Gray were good enough to overcome it.

Either way the theme is consistency, and I'm not sure why coaches have not been able to at least review the numbers and make sure huge drop-offs on the OL don't happen every 4 years when we lose seniors, then it takes 3 years to build back up.

If by "he" you mean Moorhead, pretty sure Moorhead had zero and Mullen had 2 against LSU. But yeah, he had as many wins (zero) against Bama as Mullen did.

Recruiting rankings the last 10 years 22, 24, 36, 18, 28, 24, 27, 24, 28, 25. Looks like Leach is recruiting pretty much the same as Mullen and Moorhead did.

If you want to consistently compete with teams with more talent than you, you are going to have to do something unique. Leach brings that to you. Will it work? Who knows. Put power running teams out of spread formations aren’t exactly groundbreaking in the SEC these days. I think that’s why Mullen, who was very good, couldn’t beat Alabama or LSU in their good years. He just simply got out-talented.

Leach will at least give teams something else to prepare for that’s unorthodox. Granted it’s not as uncommon as it was 8-10 years ago, but it’s still very different. Especially in the SEC. It wasn’t great last year, but I think that was more MSU’s fault than opposing defenses. When he gets his offense humming, y’all will go into every game thinking you’ve got a shot. And that’s fun!

Lord knows I hope I’m wrong.

Malzhan called the UCF job a top 20 job. What is he smoking?

It’s not a top 20 job, but I can see how it could be to Gus. At least at this point in his career. He will have more talent than his in-conference opponents, more resources than his peers, and won’t be in the pressure cooker that is the SEC. It’s not a Top 20 job in the sense of how we historically think of them.. but to some coaches it could be. I mean their last two HCs have wound up at above average P5 jobs. It’s why I knew Lebby was gone, if offered. It’s a great job. Luckily, they went the Malzahn route.

Mullen lost to Alabama for the same reason everybody loses to Alabama, because they are better than you. Should he have beaten them once or twice? Yeah. But it wasn't due to scheme, it was due to lazy recruiting. Sign AJ Brown and we beat them in 2017. Do a little bit better in the 2010 and 2011 classes and we might beat them in 2014. That's all you can ask for. And that is precisely why we should keep the Mullen blueprint - we were right there.

I understand about system coaches. It generally still will get you out-talented. We will see. I like run-based 'systems' better for the talent MSU generally gets.

You know who should have hired Leach? Either Arkansas or Tennessee in 2018. They truly 17ed up. They are perfect for his system.

See, this is what I don’t understand. Now we have a guy that can find THAT QB and THOSE WRs that make plays before and after they catch it. Ole Miss has been getting that for years. No they haven’t had a lot of success, but their offense has been a whole lot more exciting than ours. They just couldn’t sign the defense to go with those offenses. So if Ole Miss can have success(qualifying with lots of yards and points) with a wide open offense, even against Alabama and LSU, why can’t State? Every time Ole Miss beat Bama or LSU and MSU, it was with Offense, not defense.

You’re right, and this is fair. But, in my opinion, Mullen is a very, very good coach. He’s not a great recruiter (although he is a good evaluator), but he gets a lot out of the talent he does have. Sticking with that system doesn’t guarantee sustained success, because it wouldn’t be Mullen running it.

I do agree that Cohen’s hires seem like he’s often trying to outsmart the room. But at least with Leach he has a track record of P5 success at schools with historically lesser talent than in-conference peers. But, with more and more teams implementing air raid concepts, it’s not as different as it used to be to opponents. That was always a big advantage he had, was teams only having a week to prepare for it.
