These recruits that think they have to be 1 and done or they are a failure need to look at him. This guy is going to be a good NBA player, he came into school highly touted but it just took him some extra time to develop. Had he gone to the NBA after he left Mississippi State, he would’ve gotten lost in the D-League and never been heard from.

...and he was supposedly a lock to come to Kentucky out of high school if I recollect correctly.

He’s been a big part of KU’s improvement as the season moved along. Some kids take longer than others but too many UK fans expect instant success.

That wouldn't be the case if we knew we would have our players for more than one year. Since we have to start over every single year from square one, it is justifiable to expect instant success from our incoming freshmen because, under this model, that is the only chance we have.

Murray clearly the better player but was one year of Murray better than having Newman on this years team? The Murray team went to the sweet 16 just like this years team and imo this team with Newman would have beaten K-State. Then again who knows if Newman would have stayed for three years

We ended up with Jamal Murray :)

Just FYI, the Murray team didn’t go to the Sweet 16. They lost to Indiana in the second game.

Having charles Mathews and Malik Newman this year would of been great. Ya maybe we dont get Murray or even Monk. But did we really go that far with 2 OND? Both Mathews and Newman are 5* recruits like We had on this years team. It will take a couple years. And in that time. UKs program will benefit from these players also.

On the flip side, when players play well at UK they go in the draft and usually end up as a first rounder. It’s the UK effect. They put up those same numbers somewhere else and they aren’t first rounders. So it’s easy to say “if UK had this or that guy” but it’s likely that guy leaves in his freshman or sophomore year before he could become a very good player by year three (Newman and Mitchell). It’s the gift and the curse of Cal

Other schools get projected OAD, like Newman and Bolden of Duke, and yet they stay 3-4 years and our guys can't wait to head out the door.

You don’t believe that, if you do you’re wrong lol. Murray is averaging 16.6 in the freakin NBA and Newman scoring 13.5 just this season in college. How on Earth is Newman better than Murray?
Absolutely believe it. Saw them play head to head in high school. Murray’s team was full of d1 prospects, Newman’s team had him and 4 dudes. He single handedly kept it close and had nearly 50. Murray was real impressive that night but Newman was on a different level.

Malik screwed up big time going to MSU. Had he went to UK or KU out of high school he’d already be doing what Murray is.

That’s all I needed to know about your talent evaluation now. I can no longer value your opinion. Judging who is the better player now based on a high school game you watched 4 years ago [roll]

Talk to me in 5 years Homer. I like Murray. He’s a great player and a good guy. But if I had a chance to pick between the two I’d take Malik every time. If you don’t think Malik would have done here what Murray did you’re crazy. There was a reason Malik was a top 5 ranked player basically his entire high school career. He’s had a pro like work ethic for years.

And I don’t base my opinion solely off that one game. But it damn sure went a long way.

His game looms exactly like it did in high school now. He has learned he college game and now his talent shines. He was a beast.

It’s a weird culture thing.

If he had come here, he would have gone pro after one year regardless.

A guy like Grayson Allen would’ve never stayed here for four years.

Joel Berry at UNC would not of come back for a fourth season at UK.

Since we kind of started it with John WallAnd several guys on that team A guest guys just think that’s how it’s supposed to be here.

So guys like Matthews and Lee transfer out after not having that initial success. And we don’t build those 3 to 4 year teams.

I’m hopeful that no one transfers this year, and we have a couple juniors and several sophomores.

Well we kinda HAVE to expect instant success because they are only going to be here for a year.:flushed:

This isn't the same guy I watched for the first 20 games. He NEVER took the ball to the hole, was tentative on 3s, couldn't guard anyone. I really don't know what clicked with this guy. I don't even recognize him anymore.

This is what I've been thinking for a few years now. Somehow, kids who come here and are just moderately successful feel compelled to enter the draft. Because they know the next class of OAD's will replace them. It's the KY effect.

Ok why are guys leaving UK to early when not ready? Maybe because they just do not want to be here? Or maybe the fear of whats coming behind them ? Ulis got drafted. But he could've stayed. Most guys in his position not at UK stay. Fox , Ulis in the same back court. Interesting. Not sure it would of worked. But the 2 best points in college ball playing at the same time. I think they would of figured it out. Lamb, Skal, Humphries, KW , Mathews, Lee, Teague, Orton, are way to many guys i can just throw off the top of my head, who if had stayed. UK would of benefited greatly. No one is asking. Is Cal pushing these guys out because of guys coming in? Then guys get in not ready. We struggle with no experience or leadership. Hell the Harrison Twins should of been minimum 3 year guys. Ya we miss out on the top pg and sg for a couple years. But winners like the Harrisons with 3 years under there belts. We hang a banner. Way to caught up in great recruiting classes, making money as fast as possible and the NBA. The players first mentality works. If they stay and leave when at the top of there game. Right now. Cal uses UK to get these kids foot in the door. UK loses out on that. But the kid will make a pay day quick. I will sit and wait. If any player besides Knox goes. Not sure we will ever win a title again,

I remember watching him and Skal at the MCHF..I said both would be 1st team AA...I was wrong then but had they stayed 3 years at UK that would have been true

What Newman learned over his Redshirt year and this season was to play without the ball in his hands. He has been a stud for the second half of the season. Without him today, Kansas goes home; Duke goes to San Antonio.

Until we have some of our guys stay longer than 1 year we will be going up against juniors and seniors from other schools in the NCAA tournament and that's when it shows.

Going to be Malik Newman vs Charles Matthews in the NCAA Final, while nobody from their same recruiting class at UK (or after) will ever have played in a Final Four.
