Interesting that when Bo asked Malik which coaches he liked, Malik singled out Rick Ray. He said he was impressed by how hard they play and that it's good to see them start winning.

I think we should offer that young man a scholarship.

How many people glanced at that and read "commits" instead of "comments"?

*Hand raised.

I know Ray has worked his arse off trying to sign Newman. We may not get him

but the #TheCo-Op and Ray have worked hard*.

Seriously, what would our basketball team's ceiling be if we added Malik to the entire returning cast we have for next year? I would tend to think its pretty high. I mean the ONLY player that contributes to our current team that we lose is Roquez and we will have a large number of seniors next year. If Malik is only planning to play one year of college ball anyway we would seem to be a good fit if he wants to stay close to home. Our team really seems to have turned a corner the last couple of weeks.

If we had an excellent consistent shooter we would be a better team no doubt

about it. It fills one of our biggest voids. Ready is turning into a serviceable point guard before our eyes and Sword is the slasher. Our bigs will be serviceable next year so I would say we would be about like Ole Miss is this year.

We would be pretty good imo. Ready, sword, and malik on the court together would be tough to defend. All 3 are very quick with the ball.

I was just discussing this with a co-worker. Typically, in a rebuilding process, a coach needs to overachieve with average players before the high level recruits take notice. That is what happened with Richard Williams. But looking back, we can also infer that players themselves make the team more than anything, and much of MSU's basketball success has been based on the high-level Mississippi talent such as Erick Dampier coming in and elevating us. We have seen time and time again that if a guy has NBA talent, he will shine, no matter the team, see Marcus Beasley. Stansbury was good because of talent, bottom line.

All that to say, Ray can take a big short cut by signing Newman. However, what is to say that Ray will do anything after next year? Let's say he makes the NIT with a senior laden roster, what happens then? I do not see anything of substance lining up behind those guys (who were Stansbury signees). Do you keep Ray with only an NIT invitation? He can cement himself another few years by riding Malik Newman to the NCAA tournament, rather than just being a fringe NIT team without him.

lose Roc and Bloodman. Add Tookie, Weatherspoon, Strugg, and likely one more shooting guard. We'll have to work the numbers out since we'd be at 14 scholarship players at that point...

Hopefully get Zuppardo back at 100% next year and Staley has potential to help us as well.

The talent level is seemingly being upgraded in recruiting now if Ray can see it through that far...

Is Calipari after Newman? If yes, discussing his possibility to MSU is a waste of time.

If Harrison and booker stay in school, I'm not sure malik wants to go play 20 mins a night there. Personally I think Kansas is who gets him

We would be significantly better than OM is this year. Heck, we are playing at a comparable level to OM right now.

If he does not go to Kentucky, I see no reason why he would not come to MSU honestly. We offer the same thing any other SEC team not named Kentucky offers. I do not see us beating out Kansas I don't guess.

Plus we offer the chance for him to play at the same school his Dad played at. I don't know if that means anything to Malik but it would mean a lot to me if I were in his shoes.

Why do you say that. I don't think I've seen anyone say Malik to LSU

Edit: Damn didn't realize that LSU signed the #1 player in the country for 2015 and had another 5 star SG commited, but Malik is a SG so my original question stands.

I guess I should clarify by saying Ole miss

Is underachieving. They have some decent talent and should have a better record. Just my opinion.

True, but if Malik is as good as people are indicating, like Monta Ellis good, then that is a TOTAL gamechanger. Now I don't know if he's that good because I've never seen him play but he is rated as one of the Top 2 or 3 HS basketball players in the country.

I've seen him play several times, and he's really good, but Monta was better in HS in my opinion.

I don't see the Harrisons staying after this year. They are what they are - 2nd rounders - that appears to be their ceiling. Say what you want about Calipari, but if a kid is projected in the draft and there is not much room for improvement, he'll encourage them to go. Booker is starting to show up in the lottery in some mock drafts.

Apparently LSU offered one of his AAU buddies and that helped them.

Can't remember who it was, but that's what the former poster Mr. Meoff told me.

I would think that Malik is looking to go somewhere that he can be assured to at least touch the ball on every possession, if not be the primary ball handler. That's what Ole Miss is selling him, to have total freedom and control within the offense. Could ready play off-guard like Moody?

He's telling the truth on what they are selling. Henderson comes to mind.

Take your shots.
