Missing on a recruiting projection does often occur, but that's not what happened with Askew.

Thinking Askew was ever starting point guard material, as a freshmen, was the type of recruiting miscalculation that costs assistant coaches their jobs.

This is what actually did happen. Justus and Barbee are gone now, partly as a result of this horrendous recruitment.
And Whitney, I honestly have no idea how that dude was rated top 10 ever.

From the time Cal got here and his recruiting model was to some degree understood some(including myself) pointed out that it would work as long as he got top talent and that high school player projections were fairly accurate.

Over the past few years neither of the 2 requirements have taken place. Duke and other schools have gotten the top line talent and the players we did get weren't as advertised.

Cal was able to survive as long as one of the two happened but when neither happened we were 9-16. The transfer portal bailed him out to some degree and he has brought in some nice players who were a credit to UK both on and off the basketball court.

Cal is on extremely thin ice and things are heating up.(in fact the Sharpe saga put a blow torch to the whole pond) So, short of walking on water, Cal is in the deep end

If Sharpe somehow returned he (Cal) could buy himself a reprieve. The alternative is that Cal reinvents himself and his approach or he rides off into the sunset

Sorry but Cal is not on thin ice and he will be UK several more years. Enjoy.

Let’s read the tea leaves, fellas. Cal is not after anyone because Sharpe is coming back! Trust in Cal!!!

Might want to lay off of whatever you’re drinking or you might end up like the guy in the above picture 🤣

All the news is that Patrick Baldwin Jr’s stock is free falling out of the 1st round and UK was linked earlier. He would solve the shooting PF issue. Here’s to hoping he pulls out of the draft.
Not that dude can’t live up to his hype or be a great college player, but relying on guys who’s stocks are free falling and coming off a not so great injury filled year isn’t exactly the guys that fill me with a lot of joy. But he does have upside and we need depth, so it’s okay in this instance.

It's strange that outside of Shierman Cal isn't after anyone else.He was clearly after him hard with several phone call a day until he asked for money. So clearly he thought we needed another piece but now it's nothing. It doesn't make any sense.
I think Scheierman was just too good to pass up. You don’t often find a 6’6 guy that can score the ball and rebound and also shoots lights out from 3.

I am kind of intrigued with the possibility of adding Baldwin. Might be a good fit at the 4, but will Cal let him play the 3 instead, since that is his perceived NBA position? Is he a good enough shooter and defender to play the 3?

That would make for a long frontline with Baldwin, Toppin, and Tshiebwe all 6’9. Sounds like a typical Cal frontline.

Askew was not a five star. He was a high four star and the lowest ranked starting point guard Cal has had here starting from day one.

Askew was ranked 10th in his class when he committed. If you remember, he re-classified into the 2020 class and fell in the rankings.

I doubt Calipari would start Toppin over Livingston, which would be the choice in that situation.

I do agree with that, we have always had our best teams when we were just purely bigger than everyone. I liked the days when we got on the court and it looked like we were a NBA squad playing a High School.

He was ranked 10th by one service and when he reclassed, he was ranked 28th overall.

By contrast, when Sharpe reclassed, he was still top 3. So was Bagley. So was Noel.

Legit players don't fall 18 spots when they reclass.
