The Jackson Diocese Schools: Reunited Athletically

I've received the MAIS realignment for 2021-2023.— Brandon Shields (@bshields0244) November 19, 2020

• Carroll Academy, Greenville St. Joe and Indianola Academy move up to 4A from 3A.• Canton Academy drops from 4A to 3A.• Delta Streets Academy moves up to 3A from 2A.• Discovery Christian will begin playing football and will be 2A.— Brandon Shields (@bshields0244) November 19, 2020

Wow, Carroll Academy must have grown recently. Crazy to see Carroll being a bigger school than Canton Academy.

Yeah, I remember when Canton was in the old AAA in the 1970s.

This 4A class is about the same as the old AA and it wasn’t unusual to see Carroll in that.

MAIS started reclassifying football differently— going by male students rather than all students in the previous realignment.

Carrol County used to have a safe public high school to go to. I wonder if that's changed and resulted in picking up some studentrs. Or has another private school near them shut down? Or possibly Winona public schools gone downhill some? I would have thought Carroll Academy would struggle to maintain enrollment just on the assumption that Carroll County's population wouldn't be growing (I think Carrolton and Vaiden may be the only two incorporated towns?).

This would probably mean:
6A - MRA, JA, Prep, Hartfield, Parklane, PCS
1-5A - No changes.
2-5A - Leake, Lamar, Park Place, East Rankin, Simpson
3-5A - Madison St. Joe, Central Hinds, Cathedral, Copiah, Oak Forest, Silliman

4A is a mess geographically. I can see it going in different directions.
1-4A - Kirk, North Delta, Lee, Carroll
2-4A - Greenville St. Joe, Indianola, Tri-County, Winston
3-4A - Wayne, Columbia, Bowling Green, Brookhaven
4-4A - Clinton Christian, St. Al, Riverfield, Hillcrest, Adams Christian
3A
1-3A & 4-3A stay the same.
2-3A - Central Holmes, Winona, Delta Streets, Canton
3-3A - Benton, Greenville Christian, Porters Chapel, Glenbrook (Benton is six miles closer for Glenbrook to travel than it would be if they went to Canton)

East Holmes Academy, in West, MS, closed down a few years back, that may have boosted their enrollment.

I know it did for Central Holmes, Winona Christian, and Kosciusko Public. I don't know of any of my old friends that have kids at Carroll. I'm an East Holmes alum.

Little unknown trivia...In the mid 90’s Carroll Academy was AAA when that was the highest division of MAIS. Played in conference with Heritage, Starkville, etc. In 1995 beat a very good Washington School for North State and played Jackson Academy in state championship game. Lost by like a touchdown. Michael Fair who went on to be starting Guard and Center for Bulldogs led that team.

I think there was a pretty massive difference in size within that 3A category. The largest 3A schools probably had twice as many students per class than the smallest ones, if not more.

Yes, if not more. Unfortunate for CA as they had some very good teams during mid 90’s under Tommy Nester. 95 would have likely been another State title for Nester and long overdue one for CA had they been in AA

I don't know. In the mid 80s JZ George had a smaller percentage of white students than today (it is about 40% white now). Through the 80s, 90s and early 2000s, some students in Carroll County were allowed to attend public schools in Grenada and Winona, but I believe that practice ceased about 10 years or so ago. Up into the mid 80s, some Carroll County students attended Greenwood High, which was still a good school then. I believe Kent Hull actually lived in Carroll County, but he and his brother attended Greenwood High. Additionally Vaiden High School consolidated into JZ George around 2000. Vaiden and Carrollton are the only two incorporated towns in the county, which has no stop lights (unless one has been added in Vaiden recently).

That's correct....I was going to church there at the time, and it started with maybe three grades (or less, even, I don't remember), and added a grade every year until they got to 12.

Actually all 6 teams can make the playoffs unless you're PCS and decide to forfeit the junior high football season like they did in 2019.

And when they forfeited, they were ineligible for the high school playoffs.

Well, 3A looks like it's going to be a bit more different. I was looking for anything that might have appeared in newspapers about realignment and Ernest Bowker wrote in the Vicksburg Post earlier this month that Porters Chapel is going to play 8-man football next year (link). I'm wondering what the heck Glenbrook is going to do as Porters Chapel was the closest school in their district to them-- at just a little over 150 miles away.

JA beat Carroll 21-7 on Jackson Prep's field for the C'Ship.

South AAA back then was Prep, McClure, Manhattan, Canton, ACCS, I don't know who the 5th school was. It might have been another Jackson Council School.

North AAA was Washington, Lee, Pillow, indianola and maybe Delta.

There might have only be 8 AAA schools.

Back then Canton Academy had between 1300 to 1600 kids K-12.

Is Tommy Nester any kin to Art Nester? Art was head coach at Kosciusko and Louisville.

Not sure about that. He is the current head coach for Indianola Academy. Been there for years and won a lot of championships. Recently inducted into MS sports HOF.

While the town of Carrollton may not be growing, I would not be surprised if Carroll County is growing. Also, the tuition at Carroll Academy is half that of Pillow Academy in Greenwood, and there are likely some parents unhappy with Pillow and have moved their kids to Carroll Academy.

I know of 0 people who live in Leflore County and send their kids to Carroll Academy.
Well I didn't say where they lived. Maybe I'm mistaken, although when my kids were at Pillow there were plenty who lived in Lefore and sent their kids to CA. I don't follow Pillow nearly as much as I did when my kids were there but I expect there are still Leflore/Carroll County parents who could send their kids to either and send them to CA. Same with North New Summit.

I'm not trying to compare them at all. Pillow is strong. Growing and tough (in a good way) academically. Great kids there. An excellent private school in a state where many private schools are struggling.

Pine Grove is moving up to 2A, the girls are are back-to-back-to-back-to-back champions. The 2020 seniors ended all 4 years of varsity hoisting the gold ball. With Ingomar down to 1A it’s really gonna shake things up.

Glenbrook will be LHSAA next year as a provisional member. I was the former AD there and once River Oaks left, it was only a matter of time before Glenbrook left as well.

Unfortunately, I’m not surprised. Between River Oaks leaving and the rise of 8-man football, Glenbrook was on an island.

Thanks for the info about this.

No self respecting Greenwoodians would let their kids slum it at CA! Most Greenwood kids that wind up at at CA have "worn out their welcome" at Pillow.
