Do not realize what it is like in much of state? Yeah right, Mississippi has areas known to have no racial issues of any kind. . Are you serious? Some are worse than others, like where I am from, I will give you that.
Having racial issues is not incompatible with much of the state having awful public schools. Hell, it's likely a significant cause of having awful schools throughout the state. But that doesn't mean parents send their kids to private schools because they are racist. It just means that we have a lot of areas where there are ****** public schools. I suspect a lot of parents who are racist would still send their kids to a decent public school before burning an extra $5k to $15k a year per kid. That's a lot of money to most people in Mississippi.
So let me understand you are saying that a parent would send their child to a school that is lacking in academics with another school in the same area that had much better academics? Could you list some of those reasons? Other than class size. I am sorry I thought the main point of school was class? Apparently not, all I can say to any parent that would do this is I am glad I am not their child. I would also say to those parents spend those college savings accounts because with that attitude and outlook little Johnny is not going to Harvard.
That's not what I said, although I can still easily point out some options. And the fact that they don't immediately come to mind for you is somewhat shocking. But for example, usually, public schools have better programs for people with special needs. So I knew one set of parents that sent their special needs child to a relatively ****** public school b/c it was still better than sending them to the good private school that they could afford (and did send their other child to) where they had basically nothing for him.
I know parents who had a son that was apparently awkward to the point of probably having something like SAD, and moved him from a great public school where he was miserable and struggling to a tiny school where he flourished. Also a set of parents that had a daughter doing great at the great public school.
I know a set of parents that moved their child from a good private school to one that was not as good to get them away from a particularly bad peer group (also worked out).
I know parents who have sent their boys to a private elementary school simply b/c their boys were rambunctious and were getting in trouble in public school while the private school did a lot of hands on learning.
I know of one set of parents that moved their kid just because they were bullied; good academics and happy is better for most parents than great academics and miserable, as well as usually probably more successful at educating the bullied child.
I know parents that have let their children choose which school to go to, just because they thought where the kid was happiest would be more likely to yield good results.
I know plenty of parents who send and have sent their kids to catholic schools that aren't quite as good as the public option because that's important to them.
Again, it's shocking to me that anybody would have the lack of imagination to come up with some reasons other than racism that parents might base a school choice on.
School choice is a straw man. They have tried it in Jackson and it failed. Given that the Delta has very similar racial demographics and poverty rates when compared to South Jackson I would imagine that it would fail there as well. School choice kills public schools while promising parents results.
You are making a straw man against school choice. All school choice promises is that parents won't be stuck with a ****** school just because they live in a ****** district and can't afford private school. It's not going to fix, and doesn't promise to fix, dysfunctional communities. But there are plenty of poor people that are still good parents and the ability to send their kids to an even mediocre school would be a game changer for their family.
And Jackson hasn't really tried school choice to my knowledge. They have some charter school options, which is better than nothing. But it's not like the money the state and federal government spends on children in Jackson's school district was acctually made available to them to make take with them to a school of their choosing. And I'm reasonably sure it wasn't school choice that killed Jackson public schools, unless you are referring to the choice that many parents and potential parents in jackson make to leave Jackson to go to a better nearby school district.
