I’m at LWC and Jacob’s go Griffs! I should have done both as advised earlier this week!

Being an area guy and hearing all the good about them. After this outcome maybe the ihsa should never screw a private school again. At 4-5 Taft vs Marist the outcome is clear. Our state needs to stop supporting public league teams and start pushing strengthen of schedule.

I hear what you're saying but how do you determine strength of schedule? Taft got in because they had more playoff points than Marist, which is total wins of all opponents.

It has nothing to do with screwing private schools or supporting CPS teams, the system for qualifying for the playoffs is as cut and dry as it can possibly be and teams know what they need to do from day 1 in the summer.

Marist lwe would’ve been more competitive. That’s where our state doesn’t look big picture.

Strengthen of schedule conference wise
ok, how do you determine that? Not even a question that Marist's conference is tougher than the CPS but beyond that how do you compare one conference to the next? Taft ended up with more playoff points than Marist and that's the tie breaker.

You can say they would have played LWE better, but that's all speculative. Marist beat one team with a winning record this year, they beat BR by 6 and BR got clocked by Batavia tonight.

Again the IHSA system is cut and dry, it has nothing to do with the IHSA's feelings towards privates or CPS or anyone else, especially in 7A and 8A where teams are seeded 1-32. The IHSA has zero to do where teams are ranked. It goes by record and then playoff points, and if those things are tied then I believe the tie breaker is wins over teams qualifying for the playoffs, but I could be wrong. Carmel/Rita is an unfortunate round 1 matchup but there's a clear process as to how it came to be with no subjectivity involved.

Nah, that's ridiculous. You gotta actually win the games, participation trophy boy.

Marist likely gets clocked to. Just would have taken longer. IHSA system isn't perfect but its better than most. Rice was embarrassed by Batavia and MC took the pedal off the gas vs Rita in the second half.

The flaw is you are not comparing Marist to Taft. Classes are fluid and not set in stone. Marist was also competing with some smaller schools for that final spot.

Great point, a 1A school could have just as easily been the last team in rather than Taft.

never said they’d win that game but as a 4-5 they played much higher opponents than a 4-5 Taft.

In all honesty lay out who each played. There is no CPS school that played the same type of schedule. Also if you switchedd situations Marist would’ve been a playoff qualifier.

As was already mentioned, why are you comparing Maris to Taft? Taft was not the last team to make the field, Quincy Notre Dame was. Six 4-5 teams got in and Taft was the 3rd, so there were 3 other teams that got in over Marist. Below are the 4-5's that got in and their playoff points. Marist had 48 playoff points, sorry not enough. Try again next year.

Naz 4-5 56
Glenbrook South 4-5 52
Chicago (Taft)4-5 51
Sterling (H.S.)4-5 50
Plainfield (North)4-5 49
Quincy (Notre Dame)4-5 49

Yeah that's great and all but classes aren't set ahead of time. I am sure Marist would have done better vs Princeville's schedule than Princeville would have vs Marist's, but that wasn't considered either.

If they are that worried about getting to 5 wins, they need to open up the check book and buy a week one win again like they have done previously.

Both were 4-5 Taft would’ve been 1/8 or 2/7 playing Marist schedule Marist would’ve been 8/1 or 7/2.

No one is disputing that. Yes, Marist plays a tougher schedule than Taft, so what? Marist was the first team out of the playoffs and Plainfield North and Quincy Notre Dame were the last two in, so why do you keep singling out Taft when they weren't the only team to get in over Marist.

Yeah we get that. Most big schools could make the argument they would have made the playoffs if they Cherry picked some other playoffs team schedule. Especially CPS and they are probably correct.

Do you understand Marist was not competing directly with Taft for the right to get clocked by LWE?

Using Kenwood as a common opponent of LWE and Taft it was pretty obvious what the outcome was going to be in Frankfort last night. Kenwood doubled up Taft and LWE week one destroyed Kenwood. It easily could have been a 85-0 destruction. That is why I chose to see Lincoln Way Central and Jacob’s Algonquin play which was a fantastic game. Can we assume that a top ten team annually like LWE should win a first round game based on seeding and a 5 game playoff scheme?

I don’t see the argument here. If East were to play Marist at home they would have beat them. Saying Marist deserved to play East rather than Taft is kinda selfish. Listen neither of those two teams were going to beat East at home. Changing the IHSA rules because a fan thought one 4-5 team was better than the other 4-5 team is kinda outrageous . I don’t like 4-5 teams making the playoffs anyway. My opinion you shouldn’t be in the playoffs with a losing record. Just my opinion.

This scenario works in 8a. If a CPS team were to make 5a playoffs at 4-5 over Naz would we say that both were equally deserving even though we all know one could run the table while the other is getting bounced round 1? I’m not sure how you can say both are equally deserving. If you were to blind resume team A vs team B, I think it would be quite clear to see who was more deserving / who proved over 9 games that they can at least compete in the ‘23 IHSA playoffs. Everyone knew before the game Taft wasn’t going to compete.

Actually your scenario doesn't work in 8A. Taft had 50 playoff points, Plainfield North had 49, Marist had 48, so your beef is actually with PN and not Taft. If Marist had got in over PN then they would be playing Loyola and not LWE, and we already saw how that game would go.

The IHSA playoffs have nothing to do with blind resumes or who's more deserving. It's clear and cut and dry. Marist knew on the first day of summer camps what was needed to make the playoffs and they didn't do it, pure and simple. If Marist wants to blame someone other than Marist for not getting in the playoffs, which is what you people seem to want to do, blame St. Pat's or Niles ND for only winning 2 games each. One more win out of those two teams and Marist has one more playoff point and possibly gets in over Plainfield North or Quincy ND, NOT Taft as those were the last two teams to get in.

Finally, you imply Marist would have been competitive against LWE (even though they would have played Loyola had they got in), but just because they may have scored once and still got clocked doesn't make it a competitive game.

Competitive or not a loss is a loss and you’re done. Why is it if you think your team is more competitive you’re more deserving than the team that had more playoff points. I don’t really care what conference you’re in if you have a 4-5 record you certainly shouldn’t be arguing about getting in the playoffs. Is a ridiculous argument.

So what is your solution? Very curious. You seem to be disillusioned with the current playoff selection process, so what do you propose? Earlier you said "In all honesty lay out who each played" but obviously that doesn't mean anything. You mean you want a few guys in the IHSA office to put the schedules of each team in the state up on a giant whiteboard and just qualitatively select who they think should be in the playoffs?

If you are going to bellyache about they playoff system because didn't get to get whalloped by LWE (A random comment because as has been mentioned before they wouldn't have played them), then lay out your proposal for a new system in a coherent way.

sorry the reason i said the scenario works in 8a is because all of those teams lose to LWE however in the lower classes teams with bad records that barely make it in end up winning the whole thing. Imagine if Naz and Provi didn’t make the playoffs last year at 5-4 because a CPS school had more points. I wasn’t arguing Marist should be in the playoffs or that any 4-5 teams should be in. I just don’t understand denying the obvious. If you take away the four traditionally quality CPS programs, CPS teams RARELY are as good as their records and playoff points reflect. Like not even close to it. I remember back in the day we had a running clock before halftime vs a CPS team week 1 only to find out at the end of the season they were 7-2 and had a better seed than us in 7a. How do you think their first round matchup went?

I fully understand that Marist or any non CPS school is still losing to LWE but it would be nice to have games that go into the 2nd half.

Rules are rules and that’s the way it is. There is no good way of fixing the 1st round blowouts and misleading seeding that occurs every year with CPS teams. It is what it is.

As long as there are 8 classes and 5-4 and 4-5 teams making the playoffs there will be first round blowouts, regardless if they're CPS teams or not and Marist would have been one of those blowouts. Morris played Tinley Park last night and won 56-6 and they weren't a CPS team.
