My guess it was out of necessity mostly but great job by the staff getting him involved early as a WR. He’s going to be a pretty dynamic player for us.

I think we are in good hands after Adrian graduates.

I hope there is a legit QB competition next year. I think Luke is a much more dynamic playmaker than Adrian.

I think that's fair. Wait until you see Smothers.

Oh... and Adrian Martinez leads the Big Ten in Total Offense per game.

Luke should learn other positions/aspects of the offense. He's a great weapon. Given our skill position recruiting, he needs to be on the field much more often and that means at WR and RB or in the Wildcat. Absolutely!

Who says there wasn't a legitimate QB competition this year? I love McCaffrey, but certainly wasn't expecting him to win the job as a true freshman. Next year I like his chances, but Martinez could rebound too.

He also ran for more yards per attempt than McCaffery yesterday but let's not use statistical facts.
McCaffery hasn’t been a turn over machine . Let’s keep that in mind. AM has 10 TD and 8 INT. If not for 2 lucky bounces off of Maryland defenders and into the arms of JD, AM would be 9 & 9. Ouch... But let’s not say what if, he’s still 10 - 8, that’s awful. He also fumbles a ton

But let’s not use statistical facts.

Yeah it's amusing when the slobberer-in-chief lectures other people to stick to the facts.

Luke can tote it but he is a project in the passing department. Love how he plays smart and I love that he was so pissed about not getting that TD.

When does Smothers enroll? If he's coming in December it's gonna be an interesting off-season. That kid can FLY.

You make two good points, thanks. Smothers is the real deal and Martinez is playing QB at a time when this program is in a major transition—we are fortunate to have a QB of his ability at this time. The competition between Luke and Smothers will be very interesting and they will push Martinez, but he is the guy. They are the future.

Completely different offenses.
Mariota was 7.5 TDs/ 1 Int over his career at UO.
Darron Thomas was 3.88 TD/ 1 Int over his career at UO
Milton was 2.9 TD/ 1 Int over his time with Frost at UCF.
Martinez 1.68 TD / 1 Int in his first 2 seasons at NU.

He is not a good quarterback. The longer Frost stays with him the longer we are going to struggle.

My overall point is that how many touchdowns a qb throws is kind of meaningless. Obviously, a good player will throw more than a not so good player. A good running qb, esp a bigger guy, is going to have a lower number of passing tds because it's easier for him to just run the ball in rather than throwing.

I had this same debate on twitter about touchdowns for the Heisman between McCaffrey and Ingram. I thought it was meaningless than Ingram had more TDs.

last time I checked TD are the most meaningful stat on offense. It’s the only stat that shows up on a scoreboard. And AM is billed as a true duel threat QB, is he not? Crouch was never billed as a true threat throwing. Come on man.

And not to bust your chops too much but Ingram and CMC never went head to head for the Heisman. They weren’t even in college at the same time. I think your thinking of D Henry vs CMC or Ingram vs Gerheart. Same schools head to head, different guys

I love the fact Luke was willing to do whatever necessary to help the team this week.

I think it all depends on how good Smothers is when he gets to Lincoln. If Luke gets passed on the depth chart at QB, he may be willing to become a Swiss Army knife for the offense-slot WR, RB, wildcat QB.

Yeah Crouch was only billed as a HS All-American, and future, and present heisman trophy winner. He still sucked at throwing because we didn't have anyone on staff who could teach a qb how to throw, nor was it a high priority. The fact that AM is about to pass Frazier in total yards just shows how a QB under T.O was a game manager and a qb under Frost has to be a stud...1st round pick type of talent.

My money is on Luke.. he only has to learn how to not be such a ball hog.
So you're saying Luke is like Crouch. :D

(As I've said before, I don't blame Crouch for not pitching to Dan "Butterfingers" Alexander.)

I really enjoy watching McCaffrey play. But he is still the 3rd string quarterback. He looks really good running the ball. And he threw one good pass yesterday. But can he sit in the pocket and throw the ball with any accuracy at all? I refuse to believe that Frost is just a total idiot and promised Adrian a starting spot. If Luke is better next year he will be the starting QB. But I would dang near bet my house that Luke will not beat out AM.

He won't. AM will be the starter next year. Saying otherwise is just crazy talk.

McCaffrey has not spent a single drive yet in real game time where he had to stand there and make reads for an entire drive.

Yes, but the little time he's had at qb is downright impressive. AMart is fast but McCaffrey is quicker "and" far more aggressive running the ball (similar to Crouch). It's a great problem to have!

I wouldn't get too worried about Smothers. Yes that kid can move, but his passing will scare the living daylights out of you.

He was a ball hog but they couldn’t stop it so why not?

You must have him confused with another Smothers. His Passing this season is what’s gotten him awards, schools constantly in and out of his school, and we will be shocked if he doesn’t win Alabama’s Mr. Football.

In Amart's freshman year, he wasn't as fast as Luke, but he was every bit as good and looked natural running the ball.

Of course he is more aggressive, he knows he is going to run the ball not throw it.
