Interesting. He may think this is his best shot at pro baseball given the talent we have coming back. I’ve always really liked LA. He is 100% a bulldog and loved playing here.

Is this an encouraged exit? Do we have guys playing out of position or is someone we signed a SS? We just lost a really good Junior middle infield duo. Strictly defensively speaking.

Yep, this is a strange one because I don't believe LA redshirted so he would lose nothing to play one more year at MSU and then ink next year as a FA. And if he could raise his BA to an acceptable level he might even get drafted next year. Concerned SS is going to be a liability position for us defensively next year as we don't really have a defensive standout ready to take over. Wish LA would give us another year because I personally don't see him going anywhere in professional ball.

We will be fine at both shortstop and second base.

I'm wondering now if JT Ginn may be taking over as SS when he doesn't pitch. Odd timing to hear Ginn is coming followed by LA leaving in less than 24 hours.

Was hoping he had figured things out a little at the plate towards the end. Suprised to see him leave as a junior though. Has he graduated? I wonder if he's worried about playing time next year.

I have heard & read several cryptic comments saying that some negative press would be coming out about him, but I don't know any details.

He failed a drug test for steroids at the CWS is what I was told a week or so ago and that he would be looking to go pro.

Correct Peyton Plumlee last year & allegedly Todd Merritt in the early 90's - drug screens before NCAA Events and if you fail, you do not play

It takes a few days/weeks I would imagine to get the results back for a test like that. My source is extremely close to MSU athletics but he’s not always accurate. I was told this a little over a week ago and I’ve been waiting to hear something in regards to LA. Just putting two and two together it appears the info given to me was correct.

In a situation like this, I'd recommend you refrain from throwing out accusations such as this until they are confirmed, simply out of respect for Luke. I cannot understand why an MSU 'fan' would do such a thing. We all have information and sources, but we don't all lay it all out on a public forum, because, you know, we are not all idiots.

It’s no secret. It’s all over other message boards and has been rumblings of this for some time now.

Seems plausible. It must have been a singular event, because there wasn’t much talk of his spot being in jeopardy.

Well to be honest some issue like this would make more sense than him all of a sudden deciding to sign pro baseball as a undrafted FA when he has another year of eligibility at MSU.

Getting caught taking steroids would not help his professional baseball chances considering his low batting average.

Basically this. If he’s batted .220 for 3 years, there’s no reason to think he will get better. At some point, that’s just who you are. If he stays and runs the risk of being Tanner Poole next year, he won’t get drafted at all. It might be better to leave and at least get a shot at pro ball. Though I doubt he goes anywhere with it, I understand him wanting to try. Might be better to go out on top than getting benched your senior year. That being said, he was always one of my favorites and will miss seeing him.

Well, if there is an issue, any issue, where he would not be eligible to play at MSU next year then going pro makes a lot more sense. He is not going to get much money either way as an undrafted FA player and I would assume that MLB and NCAA do not share testing results.

We probably don't win the Gov Cup or beat Washington without his hits. I understand he is a low average hitter, but to say he is easily replaceable is not accurate. SS is the most important defensive position on the field and he played it well. Him and Hunter had the most errors at 11.....not 20. That is a normal # for your SS and 2B. He was definitely not a liability as SS.

I thought on the CWS broadcast they either showed the graphic or the commentator said he had 17 errors and that was before he air mailed a ball over 1B.

Graphic was wrong or commentator was wrong.

I’ve seen this posted a few times, and I don’t get it. Someone else posted Cohen said he was a potential 1st rounder at SS. If he is that good, then why didn’t we use him over Foscue at 3rd.

This is not a knock against Foscue because he did an good job at 3rd.
