In one of the closest polls for the top 3 during the season LSU comes out on top followed just a few points ahead of Alabama who were just a few ahead of Ohio State.
Full disclosure I've been a big fan of LSU since going to a game there in the mid 80s. I love this new offense and how can you not love Eddie O? Joe Burrow knows how to play big boy football.
With all that said I think Ohio State is playing the best football.

How does Alabama poll ahead of Ohio State? Who has Alabama defeated this year? Only squad I believe of note is Texas a&M. OSU has beat WIsconson and Mich State and rather badly.

True but as long as the SEC doesn't get 2 teams again that's all that's important.
With Notre Dame, Wisconsin and Oklahoma losing yesterday the Big 12 and Big 10 have no shot getting 2 teams in.

Big game Bama/LSU in a couple weeks. I remember the last time those two played in such a huge game. RU was playing USF at RU stadium. I left early, as did many other, and listened to RU come back and win on the radio

Mostly because Penn State plays OSU and the Boat Rowers. Your scenario is possible only if PSU wins out.
Minnesota and Ohio State win out. One loses close in the title game, winner is 13-0, loser is 12-1.

More likely, but still A longshot:

Ohio St dominates everyone except a close win at home against Penn State. PSU wins the rest of their games.

Bama loses to LSU and Auburn, LSU wins the SEC giving the Florida-Georgia winner a second loss.

Oklahoma, Oregon, and Utah all drop a game somewhere, PSU sitting at 11-1 with a close loss to Ohio State has a good argument.

It that means we beat 'em... then I'm all for it!

that said - it's not that I'm actively rooting for tOSU - but, if we have to get beaten up - I at least want to be part of a national championship conference.......

state penn can just die though....... who cares..........

Is LSU even better than Auburn? They just squeaked out a 3 point win, at home, and with some questionable calls going against Auburn.

LSU is absolutely a top 5 team, but their secondary , of all positions, isn’t playing at the highest level .

Why not a 13-0 and 12-1 B10 team, if the loss was closed?

Only way that happens would be #13 Minnesota (8-0/5-0) wins out (play PSU in 2 weeks) and lose close/beat OSU in Big 10 Championship.

Or maybe the first PSU/Minn game is close then close rematch in Big10 Championship.
Both would be 12-1 and a split of head to head.

Regardless, If Fleck rows a 13-0 or 12-1 Minnesota team to a Big Championship and/or into the playoffs......

The Oklahoma loss along with LSU beating Auburn makes very likely that the SEC gets two teams in.

  • The loser of the LSU-Alabama game won't even make the SEC championship game, but they will get in the playoff as a one loss team over the Pac 12 or Big 12 champions.
  • If the winner of the SEC West gets upset in the SEC championship game, they would very likely make the playoff as the second SEC team instead.
  • The only scenario that makes it impossible for the SEC to get two teams is- LSU beats Alabama, then Alabama also loses to Auburn, then LSU wins the SEC championship game. In that case all of the other SEC teams besides LSU would have two losses and they won't get a second team.

Does it matter?

Bama plays lsu in 2 weeks and ohio state and penn state play each other.

Itll sort itself out.

It matters because the opinions cannot be validated. Alabama and Clemson have not defeated a team this season that is currently ranked although they both beat Texas A&M when they were ranked (A&M is 5-3 and 0-3 against ranked teams, losing to Clemson, Alabama, and Auburn). This is part of the justification to having 8-0 Minnesota ranked #13

Georgia's only win against a ranked team was Notre Dame, who has lost two both ranked teams they've played (Georgia and Michigan) so far this season. #16 Notre Dame does not play another team that is currently ranked the rest of the way and will probably be rewarded with a NY6 bowl game.

College football starts every season off with a consensus of opinions and continues to build upon those assumptions. Alabama is good because they are Alabama. If Alabama finishes 10-2, losing to LSU and Auburn, they are likely going to a NY6 bowl because they are Alabama instead of going to the Citrus or Outback after going 0-2 against ranked teams. Two of LSU, Auburn, and the Georgia / Florida winner will go to the playoffs because they are better than Alabama.

The SEC is insanely overrated. As a result they get way too much credit for beating SEC teams that themselves were extremely overrated, Bama has beating no one good at all, same with Clemson, they are both ranked way too high base purely on brand and not results.

My final four. LSU/Bama winner, Clemson, tOSU and Oregon. Oregon's only loss will have been to a fairly good Auburn team if they win out. I do not see two SEC teams making it unless LSU beats Bama but loses to GA or FL. I could then see Bama getting in over Oregon.

This narrative is such a joke. It really is. 5 SEC teams would beat anyone in the B1G with the exception of OSU.

True but as long as the SEC doesn't get 2 teams again that's all that's important.

The SEC West has two teams ranked in the top 2 while the SEC East have teams ranked #6 and #7 or #8, depending what poll you look at and Auburn sitting just outside the top 10. LSU's only remaining ranked opponent is Alabama and the SEC East Champ if they beat Alabama. Florida's only remaining ranked opponent is Georgia and SEC West Champ if they beat Georgia. Both Georgia and Alabama have Auburn remaining as well as Florida or LSU respectively. The only way I see the SEC not getting two teams in would be if someone loses to an unranked team after getting into a position to be a wildcard. Auburn will make the playoff if they beat both Georgia and Alabama with Georgia and Alabama meeting in the SEC Championship Game.

If the SEC is so overrated, then the teams from other conferences would be taking advantage of the few opportunities they get to play them head a to head and prove it.

Oregon had a chance, but instead they choked away the game against what it turns out is the fifth best SEC team, so they can’t cry about the Pac12 being disrespected.

If Oregon had won, some lame excuse would have been made.

one of the advantages of the SEC 8 game league schedule is 1 less Power 5 opponent

The B12, Pac 12, and B10 have 9 league games meaning there is 1 game against a divisional foe instead of a bought game.

While Ohio St shouldn't lose to a Rutgers, Indiana, Purdue, or Northwestern - it can happen easier than a game against FL Atlantic or Miami Ohio at home.

LSU OOC - Ga Southern, Texas (tough OOC game), NW St, and Utah St
Bama OOC - Duke, NM St, S Miss, and WCU
Ohio St OOC - Fl Atlantic, Cincy (was ranked at time), Miami Oh
