The Big Ten West is already arguably more “competitive” top to bottom than the East.

It seems to be true only in the sense that the West has more parity. If competitiveness is defined by the number of high-level contenders, it's obvious the East is much tougher to win. Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, and MSU is a gauntlet that Clint Eastwood couldn't get a bus through.

Sometimes parity means it's easier to win because anybody could win. Well, not Illinois. :)

Oh yes, the mighty 7-5 Michigan State Spartans. Can we please stop considering them “top tier.” They are a solid team, like NU, Wisconsin and Iowa, but they are not the 4- and 5-star teams top to bottom like Ohio State and Michigan.
