Any ideas? I've called everywhere that I know of in Starkville, Oxford, Grenada, Tupelo and surrounding areas.

If I run one down I definitely expect to pay over $2,000 for it. I didn't think they were THIS rare though. My nephew has an original issued one made by International Harvester. I shot it recently and fell in love with it.

Have you checked gunbroker.com?

It’s like eBay for guns. They ship it to any FFL you designate

If you are a member of the CMP.

Civilian Marksmanship Program. You can go to the Armory in Anniston Al and pick one out. They are graded and priced accordingly. I have a friend that did this, he got one for each of his grandkids.

Right about that. When Springfield came out with their new ones I started looking for one again. I couldn’t believe what they were bringing. I’ll break down eventually. Like you, I fell in love with them after a friend let me shoot his...one day!

I've heard of them. Do you have to be a member to buy from them?

No - you just have to sign up. I bought my wife’s concealed carry Sig from gunbroker for dirt cheap. They just transferred it to my regular FFL dealer and I picked it up. I really enjoyed my experience with them.

I shot one once and all I could think was how miserable it would be to pack this mule across Europe with it kicking you in the shoulder the whole way.

Dawgbite got it right...CMP is where you want to go for an M1. If you end up driving over to Anniston, stop by the CMP Park located 4-5 miles south of the Talladega Speedway. You can purchase an M1 there and then take it out on the range (electronic scoring) and put some rounds through it.....https://thecmp.org/ranges/

No doubt. It was a critical component of victory though. General Patton allegedly called the M1 "the greatest battle implement ever devised."

I have purchased several guns through Gunbroker.com and have never had a bad experience. You can find just about anything you want. The last one I purchased, a 20-gauge pump shotgun, was purchased from a seller in Georgia, but it was shipped from San Francisco. Weird.

What kind are you looking for? There are 4 manufacturers and all kinds of collectible serial number ranges. SA made the first and the last. Only SA and WRA made them during WW2. HRA probably made the nicest overall quality. IHC are collectible and demand a premium because IHC made the fewest and was a tractor and appliance company. An IHC refrigerator factory in Evansville , IN was retooled to make Garands in the early 1950’s. Why, so that an A bomb strike on the east coast wouldn’t wipe out all of our rifle factories. ETA: I own multiple examples of all 4 makes: nice mixmasters, sharp arsenal rebuilds, and collector grades.

Same here, just bought a 1962 Ruger .44mag carbine rifle for my son to deer hunt with. I think this is my 6th rifle off of Gunbroker, and I haven’t had any issues during the process or with the guns so far.

Check rules/website before you drive to Anniston. To buy thru CMP online - you have to be a member of a registered club and have participated in a certified shoot. Or be ex military. Think some rules apply to buy in Anniston.

Supply CMP has is much lower than it was several years ago. Prices reflect it

There is a range at Anniston that online looks awesome.

Someone mentioned “new” ones from Springfield. These are not M1 garand. They are Springfield Armory (the private company not the US govt) take on the M14.

In past could get other guns thru CMP (22s, decommissioned guns, etc) but I haven’t looked at supply lately

There used to be a whole bunch of them in the Army ROTC building when I was at State. ROTC was required the first two years, and Army was by far the largest (typical at land grant schools). Everybody had to carry their M-1 around at parade time on Tuesdays. No firing pins, but you'd think the government would have some excess ones somewhere.

You can join the Garand collectors association (GCA) online for like $25/year to meet the registered club requirement.

Mississippi Hunter safety license fulfilled the shooting/training requirement. Don’t think they’re too picky with this.

I’ve bought several garands from them in the past when I used to live closer to Anniston. I did get a USGI 1911 from them too although that ship has likely sailed (they were priced like $900-1200 so sold out quick). You have to fill out the mail order form provided on the CMP website and submit your paperwork with it and they will mail a M1 to your residence, no ffl required.

You will most likely get the most bang for your buck with the CMP especially if you’re not familiar with nuances of appraising Garands

The CMP is all but out of guns. But for what they have left, it's less than half that. Shipped to your door, no FFL needed.

Got mine, through the CMP, at 10:20 while at work on the morning of 11 September 2001. A very nice lady working for FedEx handed it to me. She’s a Springfield. No cosmolene. I fired a friend’s M1 Carbine to qualify with a couple other friends. I’ve served, but went to fire anyway for the hell of it. God I love a ghost ring sight.

Unless the ones at the range are already cleaned, same day shooting not a good idea.

My rifle which I bought in Anniston was still full of cosmoline

Come on, it kicks, but not that bad. Carrying the heavy sucker all over the place had to be a pain though.
