I rememberw those who suggested his name during the coaching search were ridiculed and mocked here. I was one of them.

Looking back, would he have been the better hire?
I mean, at this point most people are gonna say anyone would have been better. I didn’t then and don’t now think Al Golden is/was the answer but it’s hard to imagine him doing a worse job.

I supported it. I honestly didn’t know much about the guy and his name emerged later on in the search. I didn’t like the way you were trashing the hire over and over from the start because it is counterproductive behavior. Once the hire is made, you have to give the guy a chance. I did, for two years, and this year is where I expected we’d know if the hire was working out. I didn’t expect him to lose me by the 3rd game of year 3 but here we are.

Maybe, but it sure as hell won’t be here .
We will remember this post Bamm. Always remember
It can be here.... if you show a little patient of course. Trust me I had the slam dunk candidates for this job, but coach Ash I knew it would be a process. Not because he was a defensive coach, but because he was a first-year guy and not a Jersey guy.

Nothing would be different with Golden here. Flood left a division 2 program to his predecessor and Golden couldn’t win with top 15 recruiting classes. We lose all the same games. On the flip side he might actually yell at the refs and show a pulse in his press conferences.

We need a real coach, only way this problem gets solved.

It won’t be. Mostly because his recruiting stinks. End of story
Recruiting is for Midwestern rural states without the population... you think Houston, Miami , TCU ever worried about four and five star players? It's an outdated system, trust me... it's all about coaching and O-Line Talent

That’s the issue.

At the time I said Golden is the best “realistic” candidate.

… and he could have brought his friend D'Onofrio, who not only sucks as a D coordinator but started recruiting Eugene Monroe for UVA while he was still at Rutgers.

Just because hire "X" doesn't work out doesn't mean that "Y" was a good option.

I started questioning the Ash hire at the beginning. Didn't know anything about him beyond what the comments we read about him. Almost universally, he was described as being somewhat boring and lacked a salesman personality. That really concerned me, as I think it is tough for a coach like that to lead and recruit alpha males. I really wanted Fleck, who has those skills in abundance.

Yes. I didn't have much of an opinion on Ash other than I liked what I was hearing about him. The improvement of the OSU defense under his watch, his national championship ring and association with Urban Meyer were obviously selling points.

I'll defer to @rutgersguy1 who has posted often on this topic and pays much more attention than I do to coaching moves. The reason I call him out is I think he correctly and consistently makes the point that coaching hires are largely a crapshoot. I hated the Flood hire but after voicing my opinion initially, I still supported him because you know the team is pot committed for at least 3-4 years once the hire is made. So whoever the next hire is I will also support, even if the hire doesn't initially blow me away.

Umm yes you did. You were one of the people making fun of me when I posted on that terrible December day in 2015 that “ash will get us smashed”.

yup...he thinks we don't remember. funny, I don't really know anything about the guy but support his hire. You can't make this stuff up. People need to be more intelligent and objective

He doesn't remember. He keeps bumping his old threads because he wants everyone to know that Plum was right.

That’s right, plum was right and plum is no rocket scientist. That just shows how bad of a hire this was.
And if i was wrong or proved to be wrong, I got no problem with people calling me out and making me eat crow . It’s part of the charm here

I don’t know if Golden would have sucked or not BUT I’m sure he would have done better than Ash. cristobol got fired at FIU a couple years after turning us down. He reinvented himself under Saban so you can’t say he was a Home run hire. He definitely would have recruited Florida hard and not Sweden.
