Not good enough but I guess we're stuck with him.

I hope for a few things next season:
1. They keep Hecklinski
2. He can run AND throw
3. The coaches spread NIL money around to recruit multiple positions, offense and defense, rather than just spunking all of it on one player

Jesus. Two wide open WRs. Mark chose the “easier” option and still missed.

That was horrible.
I don’t think he was like this at SD State.

I firmly believe his “instincts” and playmaking (in the passing game) has been coached out of him. He holds the ball too long. He doesn’t throw guys open. He tries to “guide” the ball to the receiver which is why it often ends up at their ankles. He is not allowed to just sling it.

Not taking a chance or making a mistake has been beaten into his head so much he (like others before him), have become gun shy. I don’t think this is what Lester wants, but it’s what Kirk wants, so that’s what we get.

All those things plus a shoulder that had to be repaired and he knows he can't throw deep.

The injury can be part of it, but he just doesn’t have the instincts to be a great throwing qb. He has no anticipation, he waits for high school open receivers. The final pass needed thrown a second earlier before the pressure and the receiver catches it with plenty of time to get his feet down. He threw for 10,000 yards but in 50 games. 200 yards a game on a great team in a lower division isn’t a gunslinger.

I know this is typical internet talk / gossip

but

I work with a guy who has a very close connection to this team. It was shared with him before the season started that Marks arm was completely shot….he could not trust it. Some throws he makes, but most of them he really doesn’t know where it’s gonna end up.

Great leader tho!

Kirk has continued to coach playing free out of QB's, just the way it is. A well coach QB would have hit the WR up the seem for an easy TD. Too risky. The passing game will just be bad as long as Kirk is the HC
Most likely true and first off we dont have the receivers who get open by two steps very often, dual problem

He had all day in the pocket. Super easy TD there.

It’s just sad.

Tons of credit to this year’s OL - They’ve performed very well. Yet we STILL managed to be the worst passing team in the galaxy…..

I like Gronowski, just not a good passer at this level. The first look there is an easy TD on the seem, seems coached to wait for the route under, which could have also been a TD. Hesitation is coached into the QB. I get it, bad turnovers hurt a team like Iowa that want to keep every game close

Guys come on! We’ve had zero offense until a glimmer last year. We have one of the smallest NIL funds among the top 30 teams in the country.
lester has helped but we still lack money.
Get real!
Lack of NIL funds means we cannot find one quarterback who is an average to above-average thrower? Out of high school or out of the portal? At any collegiate level?

Seems like the consensus is Hecklinski will be the starter next year. Might continue to be an average at best QB.

Consensus based on this message board, or something more specific? Not trying to come across as a dick, just curious if there's any scuttlebutt from within the program out there.

I'm at the point where I'd rather they keep a QB in the system 1-2 years, and that guy stays healthy throughout, then he becomes the starter. That way there's no excuses that he's playing hurt or doesn't know enough of the offense. I firmly believe with even just an average at best thrower, this team has at least one more win this season, probably more.

heard it on a Hawkeye podcast after the game. I guess they could still go to the portal. I like Gronowski and think that is what Iowa should look for again this offseason. There has to be a group of 6 QB that is a good passer.

Need to look at who is done after this season to see what positions will be NIL to address. Maybe not enough NIL for QB.

You would think. That's the other thing I don't really understand about their portal QB recruiting strategy the last couple years. They go after the same P5 transfer QBs that everyone else wants, strike out, and then...resort to recruiting out of FCS. Actually that seems to be a common theme across multiple positions for this staff, since the portal started.

I don't get it. KF practically made his name on flipping lightly-recruited HS players from MAC schools, but now the staff doesn't seem to acknowledge that those schools have some pretty good players who can help this team.

Kirk is giving Lester more freedom each game and each year.
next year should be that much better!
In the meantime if Lester is truly getting more say he should be advocating more snaps for assumed starter next year immediately!
Capt Fossil is the program's problem.
Never thought Lester has adequate autonomy which is why I have never criticized Lester.

That play along with the terrible throw at Gills feet absolutely killed us. When a chunk play is available and a guy is that wide open with great protection that has to be made in this offense. We were able to run the ball which leads up to Lester being able to scheme this up. It’s inexcusable to miss that by that much. The USC QB makes those throws left handed.

At SDSU he had the Janke brothers who caught whatever he threw wherever he threw it. I think his arm is toast. It's like putting chet stedman out there repeatedly. He groans after every throw but the staff is just hoping he's got enough magic left to make it happen.

A recovering shoulder tells your body and mind not to do things it used to do because it doesn't want to get injured again. It also feels fatigued more quickly, which is why I think we see his accuracy at its best in the first half, and its worst in the 4th quarter.

He's an awesome player, I just I think he needed a full year of recovery to get his shoulder back to form if he wanted to play at a high level again. SD State should have put him on a year of medical waiver like Iowa did with Petras before letting him transfer out.

He has had terrible field vision all season. Like, maybe the worst of any qb I can remember. He makes up for with his legs and mobility. I mean, he is better than what we’ve had, but still terrible in the passing game

If the D backs don't carry Wetjen OB by 1 and 1/2 inches, we have first abd goal at the 6 with 4 shots to win the game. Quit whining about MG, he's carried this team and hasn't caught a lucky break yet...

For what Iowa is paying these portal qb’s to come in and end up turds I would prefer we just play 1 of them that’s already in the room and spend money elsewhere.
Whoever decided that paying injured qb’s millions of dollars to come here shouldn’t be near NIL money.
