The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) edited information posted to its website last week on the transmission of the coronavirus from contaminated surfaces after the health agency deemed it confusing.
“After media reports appeared that suggested a change in CDC’s view on transmissibility, it became clear that these edits were confusing,” a press release published Friday read.
In its statement, the CDC said it's possible to contract COVID-19 from touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching your face, adding: "The primary and most important mode of transmission for COVID-19 is through close contact from person-to-person."
The edit comes after the agency initially said Wednesday that the virus “does not spread easily” by “touching surfaces or objects." In March, it had said it was possible for COVID-19 to spread through surfaces and objects, before updating its guidance to say surfaces are a medium by which the virus does not spread easily.

And they wonder why their credibility just goes lower and lower. The bottom line is, they're STILL saying touching surfaces or objects is not a significant way the virus spreads although it is possible. Personally, I think the mental stress of worrying over every possibility and over-isolating is a bigger risk than the virus is. I'm going with a strategy of limited close personal contact with others and trying to be smart about it, but I'm not going to obsess over it.

So you're telling us there are morons who don't understand the concept that a thing can happen, but doesn't happen routinely? And they had to clean up the language for you those people? Ok got it.

I just hope all these jokers who couldn't be bothered to wash their hands after taking a dump will develop a bold new habit. I don't want to touch any of your nether regions directly, nor via your hand if we shake hands. I also don't want to share food with you. Also, while I'm up here, don't lick your fingers when you eat. I don't want to eat your spit from the salt shaker, shared food, etc. You're nasty. Stop being nasty. <steps down>

This is why I'm a-ok if handshaking is reduced drastically post-Rona.

Right? I'm not clamoring for Victorian era etiquette, just basic consideration for others, even if you don't mind eating your own poo!

Translated the way I read it:

"We can't really confirm that any statistically significant amount of people are getting this through surface transmission. Despite it 'living' for a long time on surfaces, it turns out it's difficult to get enough viral load to retransmit through said surfaces. But we now realize that we essentially told everyone they could chill out on the OCD usage of hand sanitizer and hand washing -- and we want those to be permanent staples of American life as well as everyone to quit shaking hands or touching in general."

To be clear, I'm fine with increased personal hygiene. But just give us the facts instead of trying to induce it through fear. Personally, I'm going back to handshaking as soon as possible once this is behind us, in some instances already have just out of habit on accident, and I'm not going to waste one second of my time worrying about any of the stuff highlighted here, over the fear I might catch a small fever once every 5 years. Of course, I'm assuming that we defeat and basically eradicate COVID here. But I see no logical reason to think otherwise at this point.

I think most ppl assumed you could get it the whole time by touching a surface with the virus and then touching your face. The real question that people don’t know and would like to know is how long said virus can live on different surfaces.

But if you don’t know just shut up. It’s a mistake WAY to many politicians make and makes you realize what a genius “Silent” Cal was. I’m sure most have heard the “you lose” story.

It just isnt difficult to see what has happened thru the last couple months and understand the CDC isnt as much of a shitshow as some want to claim.
Its as if people like creating narratives of chaos and incompetence when it comes to this pandemic.

- Initially, the CDC said wash your hands, be clean, and dont touch your face a bunch. This was when a brand 17ing new virus was spreading and nobody knew what to expect. Their advice was pretty damn reasonable.
- Since then, time has allowed research to show that it isnt easily transmitted by touch and predominantly seems to instead spread thru the air. So the CDC announced the update since it doesnt easily spread by touching objects/surfaces.
- Media, both traditional and social, then ran with this and started claiming the CDC is a bunch of morons who lie/make **** up and that actual smart people cant be trusted because they dont know ****.
- The CDC then clarifies that once again, they simply havent found the virus to easily transmit from touch.

Way too many in this world are incapable of understanding how seemingly subtle differences in their native language are often times quite significant.

I think that people need to re-visit the meaning of "unprecedented" before they call out the response of any leader. Hindsight will provide plenty of political fodder for each side to shape its own lies about how much more poorly the other side handled it. Glad this media environment wasn't around for Apollo 13; I can only imagine the questions returning astronauts would've gotten!

What happened was you had a bunch of people, like you evidently, saying they said it wasn't transmitted that way. They never said that. It can and does. They said that it wasn't the primary way and person to person was. The only change they have ever made was when they went to person to person as the main mode. The initial confusion stems from what we were being told by the WHO and China.

Yeah, I figured this would be brought up in a 'gotcha' sorta way.
I haven't blamed Trump nearly as much as you or others would probably guess I have.
And when I have called him out for things, its mostly been for comments and actions that arent due to unknown factors- its been due to him flat out lying/incorrectly stating what was known at the time.

My comment in the earlier post doesn't give a full pass for anything anyone says or does during this pandemic. To me, an effort to be accurate is still required.

They are clarifying cause dumbasses do not understand when they say "difficult" to contract by touching surfaces, that doesn't mean impossible. People are dumb 17s that cannot understand the words being used in a scientific conversation.

They absolutely said that's not a significant way the virus is transmitted, which is no different from what they're saying now. There's only so many ways we can be careful about this in the long term without causing other problems, like mental health issues. I'm going to continue to wash my hands more often than I ever have and be a bit more careful about what I touch, but otherwise, I'm not going to worry about catching the virus because of something I touched.

And you can. That advice evolves as information and data becomes available. That's how science works. I feel it didn't your barber would still be bleeding you with leeches I'm sorry you don't like that enough to start cussing, but it can't be helped. Washing your hands and not touching your face is still great advice, so is wearing a mask.

Can you point out something with COVID where he has blatantly lied?

I said 'flat out lying/incorrectly stating' because I don't know which he is doing, but regardless the result is the same- harmful misinformation.
Neither should be acceptable for the leader of the free world.

I will add, for any federal agency, the initial language that a scientist produces rarely matches what ends up released to the public, especially if we are talking about non-research material. The clearance process goes through policy, legal, technical writers & some level of management, each may lack scientific expertise or understanding of how edits changes meaning.

I don’t know what happened with the CDC website, but a federal agency revising or clarifying external communications because final edits are wrong, confusing, or don't match the internal original idea/intent is sadly very common.
