James Franklin at PSU : 64-36 B1G.
I’d get rid of Locksley and see if they can get Chesney or Huff. Give them a shot at the P4 level and see if they can do something.
Jim Mora might be a decent option as well.
He can recruit but recruiting is just a means to an end not the actual end, if you can’t achieve anything particularly notable then it doesn’t mean much.

Love that the Mora hype train is back on track. Guess that loss to Rice was ok. I mean Rice is a 500 team.
What was the record of those teams before they took over? Did many more wins did they improve by? Born on 3rd base effect?
He’s at UConn, there’s perspective and context. They’re an independent and not ND. A school like that probably shouldn’t win more than 1-4 games a year regardless of who they play in the FBS.
3 bowls in 4 years, 9 wins last year, possibly 8-10 again…all their losses this year have been in OT. I don’t think they’ve lost a game by more than one score since last year.
It’s a program left of the side of the road for dead and he’s done a good job given that He’s definitely worthy of a shot at the P4 to see if he can do anything again.
Perspective and context? Rutgers in the B1G is more daunting than UCONN as an independent.
Maryland is probably tied with Rutgers as the most unattractive football HC job.
It is uphill in the B10 for RU but they get the same money from the B10 as everyone else.
Other schools like Vandy or Duke or NW or Illinois or IU (even under Allen) etc…have had their moments.
If there’s no desire to reach any notable goals of achievement then what’s the point.
For a school like RU, imo being a ranked team at the end of the season every so often isn’t unrealistic and achievable despite the uphill battle.
If anything the playing field in CFB is getting more level.
The B10 money gives RU an advantage over non-SEC schools. It means nothing in the B1G. RU made b2b bowl games. I do think it’s more likely w/o the East/West division. We just need to have another favorable schedule like last year.
Rosters (and coaches for that matter) change year to year so hard to know for sure who will be good or bad regardless of what happened the previous year.
Conference record has always been my big metric because the large majority of your schedule is there. If you can’t do okay to well there then you can’t achieve anything notable. To get to a bowl you can be 3-6 in conference which I don’t find notable. To be ranked at the end of the year you’ll likely need 8-9 wins in the regular season which means at least 5 wins in conference….doing that every so often isn’t a big ask.
The point about Mora (or Huff or Chesney or whomever) isn’t that they will be for sure successful at the P4. Them or anyone could fall flat on their face. The point should be, is the resume’ worthy of an opportunity and deserving of a shot. After that it’s a crapshoot, you make your educated guess and hope for the best.
They are close to getting the same money.
Not there yet (2027). The only problem people don’t understand is, why we were buying our way into the conference. Other programs were building killer facilities and their meme brands!
Even Maryland is ahead of us with their facilities.

Money we are still playing catchup.
If you drive around campus and look at the growth of Rutgers on a whole you can see it.
I know Athletics is coming.
I think end of the day it will be the cherry on top of a major mover and shaker as a University.
When everything is aligned we will truly be on a level playing field.
Until then, we are asking our coaches to pitch a perfect game every time out.
By the amount of coaches in the carousel we are not the only ones.
Franklin was 11-14 in the SEC and people thought that was success. Only the blue bloods with a boat load of NIL can have the consistent success.
Do they get the same $ as the rest of the B1G? I thought that doesn't happen till '27 but not sure.
Yea and the last two season were .500 and above .500 in conference and ranked at the end of the year for both of them with 9 wins. That is pretty good at Vandy.
Even all the blue bloods can’t have consistent success. See LSU, PSU, USC, UF, FSU etc…very few can and it’s even harder now and that’s because of NIL and portal.
OSU is probably the only one I think looks consistent year to year. I want to say maybe UGA as well but they’ve even looked more mortal lately…not like even say 3-4 years ago when they were a monster. It’s hard to build depth for anyone including the blue bloods. NIL and portal hits that for everyone.
Defenders of Greg and the status quo ignore context and forget Greg 2.0 has not beaten a team better than Rutgers and choose to deflect awith field houses, NIL and other resources that are lacking.
Technically I think that’s right but I think not too far away in terms of dollars now. I’m not sure the number, maybe 2-3 million but that’s just a guess. I think we got 61 or so and Michigan got 63 or so I’ll take that as about the difference.
You know our football operating budget was 49M in 2023 and 64M in 2024. That’s 6th highest in the B10 and 12th highest in the country last year. I couldn’t tell you where the money comes from but I often say when a school (not just us) really wants it, it suddenly shows up. Don’t know what the numbers are this year.
And I know if a perspective coach steps up and fails it will be like see he sucked etc…
That’s not the prism through which it should be viewed. Any coach can fail, hot name, big name, retread etc…and any coach can succeed too.
The way to look at it imo is, is the resume worthy or an opportunity and deserving of a shot. If the answer is yes, then that’s all you can ask. After that hope for the best and a little luck.
RU doesn't get the same money as everyone else. Base on this article we aren't even in the top 50 in potential NIL money. But guess who's, Maryland and like 14 other team in the B10 not name Rutgers.
NIL Ranking Efforts
Hopefully with revenue sharing RU is able to level the playing field a bit with school in the top 20-50. Hopefully the new AD + Schiano and Steve Pikiell are able to convince fans that if they want to win 8-10 games in this environment they must contribute financially.
I will say it again, the main factor of Rutgers' success moving forward is going to be fan financial support. If we don't win, it's because the RU fan base is not doing their part, and the administration is forced to do everything on the cheap/low end, which includes coaches and players.
I'm talking about conference revenue being the same for everyone for the most part (not the newest members). We got 61M from the B10 and Michigan got 63M so I'll assume that's about the difference in distributions.
We have no money but some how last year we had the 6th highest football operating budget in the B10 and 12th highest in the country. It went from 49M to 64M from 2023 to 2024. Don't ask me where the money came from, no idea and don't know what it is this year.
3rd party NIL will shrink somewhat in the future with outside the school deals having to be "legitimate" and revenue sharing raises the floor for everyone. The front loaded deals of this year and maybe next year will eventually wear off. Even Cody Campbell the billionaire spearheading TTs NIL spending spree this year has said as much. Most players won't get anything substantive as far as legitimate 3rd party NIL in the future and the revenue sharing pool from schools will be the biggest thing going forward. (assuming no lawsuits of course) Being in the B10 or SEC helps in finding the money for revenue sharing to pay players because it's 10 of millions more than the other conferences.
Everyone is spending more this year because it's coming from the schools and that's a more reliable source of funds vs 3rd party NIL. So the ceiling is dampened and the floor is raised. It'll never be perfectly level but the landscape in CFB is more level than it ever has been.

Seems it will be a new excuse each time Greg fails to beat a ranked team, or even an Illinois. Facilities, fieldhouse, now NIL. All the while, RU football spending is in the top 6 of the B1G, mostly on a bloated coaching staff that still can't figure out how to contain the edge or a mobile QB. We see the same mistakes each week-players out of position, inability to line up,.missed assignments.
This is largely due to a mysterious inability to attract an experienced and competent defensive coordinator. But there is a large bamd of merry yes men on the sidelines.
This is why we had the highest operating budget:
1) Rutgers has incurred large deficits, which are covered by university funds, student fees, and loans and not by fans support.
2) High fringe benefits of public employees compare to other schools, which Rutgers' athletic department must cover.
3) catch-up spending: Since joining the Big Ten in 2014, Rutgers has accumulated an athletic deficit of $438.9 million.
4) Debt: As of September 2021, the athletic department accumulated more than $250 million in total debt, with approximately $140 million are due to to facility construction as supposed to be funded by donors.
5) While the other B10 programs received their full share of television money over the past 10 years, RU did not.
On top of that, most B10 programs have a solid donor/fan base contribution, while RU has been ranking at the bottom in the B10 and among public universities.So, in my opinion, the university has been trying to keep up with our league, but the fan base has not stepped up to the B10 level, which to me, is the primary factor why we haven't achieved much in the last 10 years. (Basketball last year was the perfect missed opportunity due to lack of donor support).
It's truly remarkable considering the limited resources we've had that we've managed to reach two bowls in the last two years and three bowls in the last five years.
I agree about the defensive coordinator move. Horrible selection, since I believe we had a budget of $1 million, but I can imagine that it's hard to attract top coaches to a school with such a low probability of success.
Fire Greg, his entire staff. I don't care as long as we win. But my guess is that even if we do all that, the only thing that will get larger is the deficit in our operating budget, since the majority of the RU fan base is still waiting for RU to win a national championship before they can start contributing $25 per month to the athletic department.
True, but Shelby will not pile on our brutal coach one day after a win. Shelby fainted as the clock hit 0:00. Shelby’s victory euphoria has yet to subside.
Although the timing of the full share impacts the university, it’s not relevant to athletics as RU will be utilizing the full $20.5 million of revenue sharing allowed by the House settlement.
I get that but so does everyone else. It's not like RU gets something special.

Yea I figured it's covered by the university but we're not alone in that. And whether it comes from the university covering costs or donations, money is money regardless of its source. UCLA is also in the 200M plus range over the last some odd years. and they're talking about going in deeper. VT just approved a 50M/yr increase in the AD budget over the next 5 years. That's not all donations. Athletic fees, student fees etc.. will be used for revenue sharing with players. I've seen articles lately where a bunch of schools will be doing it.
If I get 10M from donations or 10M from the school, it's still 10M I have to utilize either way.

Four programs, however, extended a concerning five-year financial trend. UCLA, which joined the Big Ten this year, spent nearly $51.9 million more than it made. Over the past five fiscal years, the department’s losses now total $200.61 million. Rutgers and Maryland continue to struggle financially while they reimburse the Big Ten for money borrowed between 2014 and 2020. Rutgers reported a $41.5 million loss, which leaves its department more than $139 million in the red over the past five years. The deficit has grown each year.
Capital projects instantly become the greatest expense for any athletic department whenever they begin, whether the cost is covered by gifts or through state-issued bonds. The Big Ten’s 16 public schools reported a wide range of annual debt service from those with new or recently completed projects (Ohio State, $33.7 million; Nebraska, $30.5 million) to those without, such as Maryland and UCLA, which each spent less than $700,000.
Twelve athletic departments have total debt exceeding $90 million, and six are north of $225 million, led by Illinois ($312.5 million) and Ohio State ($286.7 million). Michigan ($252.8 million), Penn State ($246.9 million), Washington ($244.4 million) and Iowa ($227.8 million) are next in line.
Many — but not all — of the Big Ten’s athletic departments are considered self-supporting, meaning they receive no direct university funds. UCLA claims no athletic debt, and Maryland lists $8 million, so their universities scrub away their financial shortfalls. UCLA received $30 million in direct institutional support and another $1.5 million in student fees. Maryland picked up nearly $12 million in student fees and $6.1 million in direct support. Rutgers, which charts its athletic debt at $51.4 million, received more than $21 million in student fees and direct institutional support.
Five departments — Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Nebraska and Purdue — obtained no financial support through fees or direct university support. Wisconsin, Iowa and Oregon collected small amounts for shared facilities, utility usage or other purposes. Indiana accepted a $26 million loan to cover football costs following coach Tom Allen’s dismissal. Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan State and Washington received fees or direct support totaling between $4 million and $11 million each.

It's less about "something special" and more about the gap getting narrower compared to the past. If the floor is raised and the ceiling is somewhat capped that's a narrower gap and somewhat more level playing field.
The "something special" would be in comparison to other conferences besides the SEC where getting 10s of millions more in conference distribution facilitates finding money for revenue sharing with players.
Brohm benefited from being in the B1G west. I think GS 2.0 did play Brohm once. I’m sure we lost by a lot.
