If Michael Thomas is a litmus test it may be rough sailing, but Brees has proven in the past that he is tough to sink. We’ll see...

3 years ago all he would have to say is, “I agree with you guys, I just don’t like the method of your protest.” Within a week it would blow over. These days, the outrage and Twitter mob let you know what your opinion is, and if you have the gall to differ, they try that cancel culture ********.

It won't surprise me if drew just retires. If he does, I hope the saints win just enough to not get a good qb in the draft

I think he needs to release a statement tomorrow. Say you stand against racism and you understand the message the people marching are sending. You’ve supported kids, specifically minority kids, through the work of your charity. Blah blah blah.

It will blow over. Brees is a class act and highly respected within the league, I don’t see his teammates creating a mutiny over this or anything like that. Not all of his black teammates share Michael Thomas’s view of things, see Marcus Davenport’s Twitter. He was asked a direct question about Kaepernick and kneeling and he simply stated he didn’t agree with kneeling and explained why. And it’s a view that a whole lot of Americans share with him.

Brees has done more for the city of New Orleans since Katrina than any elected official has and has given a crap ton of his time and money to that city, including very recently during the pandemic. If it’s something he needs to address with his teammates, I’m sure he will. But he doesn’t owe the Twitter mob anything. I despise the current climate we live in where freedom of opinion is allowed just as long as you agree with the angry mob. If it’s anything contrary to that, you are branded a racist and a terrible human being.

He just donated 5 million to the city of New Orleans to feed people during this pandemic, and he helped rebuild after Katrina. At a protest tonight in NOLA there's a group chanting "F drew brees" SMH

Is something out of context?

He is getting hammered for his views.

He's definitely knelt with his teammates before so his comments (from this bits I've seen) make no sense. Something is being spun or he's just a people pleaser that says what his audience wants him to say at any moment.

I don’t think he survives. A small but real chance it costs him the Hall of Fame when it comes up in a few years. It wouldn’t if voting were today. But in a few years.......I see a scenario that’s he’s blackballed.

He was being interviewed. He was asked would he support the kneeling during the anthem.

While I happen to support his views in this instance, he is a liberal wank and I say throw him to the wolves. Let them fight.

Say whatever you want about Kap, but he has been very clear what the intent of his protest was and it isnt what Brees is talking about. He consulted with a vet to at least make an attempt at respectfully protesting.

Did you even read the article you linked? It actually confirms Kapernick's reason for taking a knee was disrespect for our country...the flag it represents.

He started by sitting and only moved to the knee as a compromise for a fellow NFL player. CK is a complete POS who is being foisted upon an ignorant public as some kind of heroic, martyred figure. He is trash...period.

Let's not forget the other things he did, like wearing socks depicting cops as pigs, wearing Che Guevara shirts and praising Fidel Castro. He is a low life, loser scumbag.

I do not think he has to do anything, but he probably will be issuing a statement. It is hypocritical of these people to jump on Brees choosing to stand when they once defended Kapernick for his right to kneel.

Not sure about his playing career but he probably won’t get a job with ESPN after.

Well I listened to the ENTIRE quote and I took his comment to mean that he didn’t agree with kneeling during the anthem. He said that standing during during that time is actually sign of unity and that we are all in this together to fix our problems.

He already has...

in a text message to ESPN.

"I love and respect my teammates, and I stand right there with them in regard to fighting for racial equality and justice," Brees said. "I also stand with my grandfathers, who risked their lives for this country, and countless other military men and women who do it on a daily basis."

"I believe we should all stand for the national anthem and respect our country and all those who sacrificed so much for our freedoms. That includes all those who marched for women's suffrage in the 1920s and all those who marched in the civil rights movements and continue to march for racial equality. All of us ... EVERYONE ... represent that flag. Same way I respect all the citizens of our country ... no matter their race, color, religion.

"And I would ask anyone who has a problem with what I said to look at the way I live my life. Do I come across as someone who is not doing my absolute best to make this world a better place, to bring justice and equality to others, and hope & opportunity to those who don't have it? That's what I meant by actions speak louder than words. ... My ACTIONS speak for themselves."

Brees should shut his Dream Foundation down that has contributed over $35 Million Worldwide which is feeding over 10,000 families a day during Covid crisis in New Orleans, keeping daycare facilities open, and helping support children’s hospitals because of his personal stance of not disrespecting the Flag.....

Now it’s controversial to support our country? I doubt anybody going off mad online even listened to anything past his first sentence because he gave an eloquent and thoughtful answer.

Brees is a great guy who picked a stupid hill to die on.

The dude gives so much money to charity it's insane. He obviously loves New Orleans, which is 60% black.

But this is not the week to come out strongly against the most visible peaceful protest effort of the past several years, using some hyper-patriot excuse for why he doesn't think other people should protest at a time he doesn't care for it. As long as someone isn't audibly interrupting the anthem, why does it matter? Taking a knee to draw attention to a cause is the most benign symbolic gesture ever. Let it go.

I appreciate the way that he issued an apology without backing down from his initial stance. Was it horrible timing to say something like this? Yep. Would he be fired right now if he didn’t throw a football? Yep

He has a right to his opinion about respecting the flag under any circumstances, however, and I’m glad he didn’t walk down from that.

The NFL is about 70% black. Not coaches, players. Major college football and basketball have similar demographics, this is more black than white players. A lot of white people spend a lot of money to enjoy watching sports and to support their college teams. A lot of white guys spend time worrying about whether a guy from a poor background chooses their school and qualifies and goes to class just to stay qualified. They track twitter accounts of 17 and 18-year-old African Americans. The lives of a lot of white guys are emotionally dependent to a significant degree on African American athletes on their teams playing well on Saturdays and Sundays. Sometimes, some players express opinions white fans don't like or don't support, but it's those very players a lot of white people depend on for their emotional well being throughout much of the year. You don't even have this site without these players. Finebaum got in trouble a couple of years ago for a comment. He didn't even try to defend himself because he knows how this works. He just apologized so he could move on and continue his career and enjoy life. Thems the rules now. Best accept it and enjoy life and stop thinking it's somehow about what's right or wrong in the way you view it and that somehow your opinions or reasonable argument is gonna win the day.

So apparently now patriotism is stupid?? You can't despise racism any longer yet still love your country and want to honor those who died defending people's right to protest? Starting to sound like a lot of NFL players are the bigots if the only way you can survive in the league is to follow in lockstep with CK and the like.

It definitely will be interesting to hear the comments following today’s apology. Many of his own teammates were not mincing words yesterday afternoon when they were sending “shut the 17 up” tweets and calling him a moron. Some are going to be pretty difficult to walk back from

Is Michael Thomas not allowed an opinion as well?

Kinda my thoughts as well. I wish drew could state his opinion and Thomas could disagree and someone not have to retire or get cancelled out of it. We’ve lost the ability to disagree with people.

With that said, Thomas probably would be wise to not be so vocal about drew on Twitter or via the media. If it gets to the point where the saints have to pick drew or Thomas, then Thomas is probably gone. Drew gives you a chance to win a super bowl. Thomas is a great WR but he won’t look as good in Chicago with Mitch T throwing him the ball.

Once someone tweets at Thomas that so-and-so is a better WR, Michael will lose his crap and the drew issue will be nothing to him anymore.

He shouldn't have to do that. He's done it many times already, and actions speak louder than words. I heard a mob on a bridge in Nola shouting "17 Drew Brees" last night. The same Drew Brees that donated millions to Nola after Katrina. The same Drew Brees that speaks out for and loves his community all the time. He doesn't owe anyone anything. New Orleans doesn't deserve Drew Brees.

Is this really what we've become in this country, that it is a horrible, unthinkable thing to be supportive of the flag and the national anthem?
