You're right, but you're just going to get shouted down by gun nuts.

I don't believe in a full on ban on all guns (nor is that realistic, especially in the south) but I challenge anyone to give me a good reason assault rifles shouldn't be banned. "They are fun to shoot!" and "2nd amendment says so!" are not good enough.

If guns were more difficult to get a hold of, this would not happen so often, and far less would die in each attack, no matter how many alternate kill method scenerios some like to make up.

The only way to be 100% untraceable on the internet is to use the onion router. Some of those guys are probably savvy enough to do it, but I doubt most of them did.

'Countries with gun bans don't ...' You serious, bro? If so, find one.

How many more innocent children, students, and civilians need to be gunned down before we have a national ban on guns? Does your child need to be killed, your brother or sister, father or mother?

This will never stop until we lay down our guns for the futures or our loved ones.

And don't give me that crap about only criminals have guns. Countries with gun bans don't have school shootings.

This country was founded on a Bill of Rights. Get over it. The more liberty that liberals are willing to surrender, the more the second amendment is needed.

It's much easier to change your residence than our Constitution. I trust the founding fathers more than internet know-it-alls.

Why not? Because you have been conditioned to believe that since a gun is black and has a pistol style grip, it is more deadly than other guns. You do know that hunting rifles shoot larger and deadier ammo don't you?

The Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution provides, "[t]he right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

Actual "assault rifles" are damned near unattainable for the average Joe. "Assault weapon" is a fairy tale term invented by CNN and liberal politicians. I suppose you also favor the banning of sports cars, alcohol, cigarettes and fried chicken because, well, let's face it. None of those are necessary and they all kill more people every year than guns.

The root issue is a large percentage of people being completely ignorant about the implications of cyber security. You can easily google articles about supreme court justices, lindsey graham and others flaunting/joking about their inability to use email. I'm sure everyone is familiar with the Hillary Clinton email debacle.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEVlyP4_11M

Long video, somewhat vulgar, and it's a comedy show, but very informative about this issue. Includes an interview with Edward Snowden.

So how do you round up all the guns?
Your not getting mine or my ammo.

Criminals will always get guns and whatever they want. It's the crazies you need to keep away from weapons. How do you do that?

How are those tough gun laws working g out in Chicago??

Completely false nartative.

Look at the shooting numbers for countries with gun bans. Their criminals don't all have guns. And of course gun laws in a single city or state won't prevent anyone from getting them. Obtaining guns out of state is a whole lot easier than crossing countries for them.

Of all the emotionally charged political discussions, this is the one I never understood. Why are guns so ferociously loved and defended by so many on one side of the aisle? Sure its an important issue, but some people get scary defensive about their homocide devices.

Full disclosure: I have never had a problem with handguns or hunting, but I am open minded enough to reevaluate my own beliefs. I think it's a conversation worth having, but so many prefer to stick their heads in the sand and pretend nothing is the matter.

I think we should have background checks and it should state if you have had mental issues. Also if your kid goes out and kills a bunch of folks with your gun the the owner of the gun should have some action taken against them. That way parents with guns will keep them away from kids and maybe they will raise their kids better. But guns should not be outlawed. Criminals will find a way. I'm actually looking to get me and my wife an open carry permit. The job she has requires her to go to Memphis a lot and I worry about her up there. I'd rather have something to protect herself. I'd go Rambo on some folks if something happened to her.

Say what you want about Europe (I believe that's where you're referencing), but Switzerland has one of the highest gun ownership rates worldwide. The narrative that all of Europe is some utopia without guns is false. Even France is in the top 15 in gun ownership.

The second amendment is one of main reasons the revolutionary war was started. Look up the history of lexington & concord. The redcoats started going to militia armories and confiscating their weapons and arresting rebel leaders so they couldn't revolt or would have little resistance to the british army presence. When the colonists found out about this, they rallied and fought back.

We're a stronger nation as a whole by having a well armed citizenry. It really is an invasion deterrent if you know the populace is armed. It's honestly one of the biggest issues we had with our occupation of Iraq.

I guess my question for you is this:

If someone breaks into your home, with the intent to kill your family in the most brutal way possible, how would you defend it without a gun, especially if it's multiple people/you're outnumbered. After reading about some home invasions in history (such as Manson), I am well armed in my home. I don't care what the odds are of that happening, I'd rather have a fighting chance. Even if you call the police, their response time will be 5 minutes at best. That also means trusting a government organization to your personal safety, which is run by people, who are corruptible.

There is such a thing as common sense and it should be applied here. I have no problem being monitored because I have nothing to hide. I don't feel like I'm losing any of my freedoms in the process. We live in a dangerous world.

We already have a national system of background checks and the 4473 that must be filled out when buying a firearm from a dealer asks about mental illness. Unless we create a system of identifiers for the criminally insane (there's no way to do this), we can't solve this problem without affecting law abiding gun owners. I don't believe in punishing the majority because of the minority.

Although I agree there needs to be a little more control over who can and can't buy guns, I get sick of the double standards people argue these things (on both sides). A soldier or law enforcement officer gets killed? Memorials all over Facebook, Twitter, and endless bitching that the president doesn't do more to honor them (not that these things aren't tragic). 10 innocent college students get killed in cold blood? Massive bitching about gun laws (again, by both sides) and hardly any mention of the families and friends affected (again, by both sides).

There are now 10+ families who are deeply impacted, not because their family member died doing a job they were sworn to do, but went to school one day and didn't come home... All due to an epidemic that has grown worse and worse the past 15 years where someone gets their hand on a gun (who doesn't need one) and decided the only answer is to shoot up a school.

I use to run an outfitter and a man that had been institutionalized would come in and try to buy a gun about every two months and get denied. We eventually stopped running his paperwork for him until he came back one day with a letter from the ATF saying he could purchase a firearm. We ran his paperwork and it came back a proceed. The 4473 does a great job and keeping them out of the hands of people who shouldn't have them, but this case is an example of how it's still flawed

Terrible post.
You are comparing a tool whose sole reason for existing is to destroy other things, with activities/tools whose reasons for existing range from moving goods and people to self enjoyment.

I would be EXTREMELY

surprised if that were true. Hell MS is one of the MOST gun-rights-friendly states there is, and they're banned in school zones here.

I just find it curious that this shooting happened on campus in a "gun free zone". Do you think it was coincidence that it happened in a gun free zone? Kinda takes away all of the resistance for a psycho to carry out such actions.

I recently just obtained my concealed carry permit. This in hopes that I will never ever ever ever have to use it against anybody. But you better believe if some psycho ever storms into the same vicinity that I am in and starts shooting people, I will gladly be putting a .45 in his head.

Honest question and I have no idea either but how many of these mass shootings were done with AR-15 rifles and how many were done with several pistols?

I'd argue that people have been systematically killed by tobacco in greater numbers and for longer than firearms having been used to kill people.

God forbid the day these idiots figure out that a couple semi auto shotguns with extended tubes and buckshot has infinitely more lethal capabilities in the context. Will you want to outlaw the shotguns then?

I get that people want to do something to prevent these tragedies from occurring. I just don't see the easy answer. And the reason no one on the pro-2nd side wants to give up their inch is because they feel it's a gateway toward more and more gun control. What about the shotgun example when someone that knows how to operate one goes into a school and kills 50 in about 3 minutes? What do you do then?

Really? I suppose the enjoyment I get from range day is less important than the enjoyment one would experience while driving a Dodge Challenger Hellcat. Second hand smoke has never killed anyone unable to leave that environment? Guess the smoker's self enjoyment matters more than the gun owner's? Fried chicken was a bit of a reach though. Gus's, however, has caused quite a bit of anguish and pain in households all over Memphis.

The steady decline in appreciation for life is incredibly disturbing

Perhaps I see it as a decline overall in society since my personal appreciation for how precious life is continues to steadily increase. So its not that the overall appreciation is down, its just that mine is up.

I was a senior in HS when Columbine happened and since then, its seemed like a steady stream of mass shootings where innocent lives are removed from this Earth far too early. Really though, its just that 24hr news and then social media have both risen in popularity since '99 and as a result, everyone is inundated with an overload of information.
I wouldn't hesitate to say that school shootings are more common this century than last, but its not like the 70s and 80s were some golden age of respect for life.

This will continue to be a problem until we as a society adjust how we treat our kids. Learning sympathy, empathy, and conflict resolution at a young age will help reduce severe alienation later in life. Also, mental health needs to stop being something that is taboo and made fun of. Mental health is no different from physical health and should be treated as such. "Oh, you have a peanut allergy? That must be difficult when eating at restaurants, but its great you are working with an allergist to reduce the allergy. I am bipolar and am also in treatment."
But nope, life isn't like that yet. Cancer is embraced and supported, but schizophrenia is hidden and looked at as sad. Hell, even ADHD is controversial since like most mental health issues, it doesn't physically manifest itself in a way we can all see, so people doubt its existence and shame those who seek help for their children.

Inclusion, empathy, and support- these 3 things are seriously lacking in childhood and it is up to the parents to instill these things in their children. A more supportive school society that is more inclusive and empathetic will help reduce the severe alienation that so many of these desperate shooters feel.

I don't have a solution, but it's pretty clear we have a problem. Fact is, we as a nation decided we are going to live with these type of shootings happening routinely, and we aren't going to do anything about it.

+1, mstateglfr.

We may not see eye to eye on some of this, but I would argue that you just hit the nail squarely on the head with this issue. The solution will never be as simple as banning guns or requiring background checks or anything else that can be legislated. We have societal issues and there isn't an easy fix for that.

Our politics has gone from a sincere discussion of true issues

To picking a side and doing everything in your power to piss on the other guys. Zero productivity in collaborating, discussing, and reaching common ground on REAL issues and instead, when someone doesn't get their way, they shut the government down and make its citizens suffer the consequences.

And you are right. We have done NOTHING about these kinds of shootings. The incident at DSU and the scare on our own turf should rattle everyone. That's our own back yard and I'll be damned if a single student is scared to death to go to school because they don't know when and where the next shooting will be.

This is true. ^^ And I completely understand why Obama was so pissed in his statement. But he's mad at the wrong people. The problem with passing "common sense gun laws" as he calls them, is that nobody trusts the government to not go completely overboard with them. The government would screw up "common sense" and turn gun laws into something far worse. That's the problem. Most people on either side of this issue are for passing common sense gun laws that keep guns out of the hands of crazy people, but don't trust their government to do it the right way.

They have screwed up everything else they have passed since Obama took office, and a lot when Bush was in office. I don't trust our government to run a free lunch program, why should I trust them to pass "common sense" gun laws?

There could still be gun ranges- you rent a gun at the range to shoot. Yup, they wouldn't be custom for everyone. Think of it like gocarting- you go to the track and rent the gocart.
But still, I am not advocating a total ban on guns. I was simply criticizing the post that compared guns to cars, alcohol, and cigarettes.

Guns are made to destroy other things, specifically life.
Cars are made to transport goods and people.
Cigarettes are made to give the user a chemical stimulant that makes them feel good.
Alcohol is made to give the user a chemical stimulant that makes them feel good...and then depressed.
Fried chicken is made to feed us(a necessary action) in a fun way.

I understand the poster's attempt- they tried to equate guns to other things that have the potential to be harmful. Thing is, none of the things mentioned are inherently harmful to others as in they aren't made to harm others. Only guns are made to hurt other things.

As for second hand smoke- that is a misuse of cigarettes. The shooter didn't misuse the gun- they used it exactly how it was intended. They used it to destroy other things.
Please don't forget how important it is to acknowledge proper vs improper use. And if you or anyone argues that using a gun on people is misusing it, they are being dishonest and just trying to continue to argue. That would mean shooting a dangerous intruder is misusing the gun. That would mean our military and police misuse guns. etc etc etc.
The reality is this- guns are made to destroy others. The things that poster listed are not made to destroy others.
