I wouldn't be too sure at least statiscally that tOSU's starting LBs are better than Reimer and Henrich.

Posted are the season stats from both Ohio St on Page 10 and DONU.

Reimers and Henrich are the best pair of inside LBs we've had in many years. But our outside LBs aren't to be confused with Von Miller.

Alberts played in the 4-3. Williams and Thomas were in the 5-2. Nebraska has a lot of good edge rushers in their history, one of their better positions.

Yeah, Alberts was part of that era where we moved safeties to LB and LBs to "rush end". Great player. As for the 5-2 era, Broderick and others were called defensive ends but played out of a two point stance. They just as well could have been called outside linebackers and the defense was pretty much a 3-4. Those defensive ends set the edge vs. the run and on pass plays seemed to rush the passer 75% of the time.

Yah, Ernie Beler and Stewart are guys that played a major role in that transition. I loved Charlie McBride's version of the 4-3. He loved bringing the heat. QB's can't make plays when they are on their backsides.

Back in the day, I played DE in 5-2 and we rushed the passer unless a RB crossed our face. If they went under us the LB took them. Of course that was about 40 years ago

Yep. Maybe saw 1/4 of the formations, especially 11/10/00 personnel stuff, than they do now.

McBride was ahead of the game when he switched to dime personnel so he could cover #2 receivers with quick OLBs and turn people loose upfront who wouldn’t see any option(nobody ran zone read yet).

Those ideas would get destroyed by FCS teams now though.

No! Those players played more the 25+ years ago under a totally different defensive scheme. Just say that they're not very good at all if that is what you mean! Stop with the comparison of other Nebraska era players and NFL defensive players.

Do I think out OLB/DE's have been very good? No! But let's give them a chance as they are going to be a year older and should be better and better be better! Our coaches need to do a more extensive evaluation of the type of player they need to play in the defense they run, PERIOD!!

That is a strategy that unfortunately been missing from our D for a long time.

Only two B1G LBs mentioned herading into early 2022. One was already mentioned in this thread. A number of good LBs departed B1G this off season, it should be an interesting 2022 campaign in both the B1G East and West.

Wisconsin defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard likes to dial up pressure in creative ways, which is why edge defender Nick Herbig served in a hybrid role, playing 208 pass-rush snaps and 153 coverage snaps at outside linebacker in 2021.

At 6-foot-2 and 227 pounds, Herbig may not be the biggest edge defender, but he is agile, has good pop in his hands and has an excellent pass-rush plan. The 2020 top-150 recruit ended up with a 91.4 pass-rush grade, a 26.4% win rate and a 20.7% pressure rate for the 2021 season — all of which ranked top-five in the Power Five.

We had a comment saying he's the best ILB in years. I've seen him play enough to know that's not true. For one, he's slow, probably runs a 5.0 40 at best. Second, he often gets himself out of position. He's a mediocre starting linebacker.

The one thing that has bothered me about Heinrich is his speed. Or lack thereof. When watching him in his HS clips (didn't see him live) he looked plenty fast. In fact I actually thought that would be one of his stronger points. So far though I agree he hasn't looked near as fast to the naked eye anyways.

I do however like Reimers more. He's a bit smallish so there will be times that if he gets engaged he's gonna get bullied a bit. But overall I think he's a pretty good backer and has steadily improved. I was extremely high on Heinrich coming out of HS but I do wanna see a but more from him. He is still a bit younger tho.

NU has an ILB that has good instincts and decent speed and one who was sub 11 seconds in the 100M in high school. That's a nice combo.

Are we sure that's why he looks slower? Or could he possibly be ...slower? Can't really tell without some pre and present numbers right?

Idk tbh but either way I think it's safe to say that so far he's been a step behind for whatever reason.

Again he's still young so we will see moving forward. But just for kicks go watch his HS clips again and tell me you don't notice a difference. The more and more I watch I'm not truly convinced it's the step up that's making him look slower.
