To be fair, while obviously not dead, this is a major major setback. We will probably need to play like a top 25 for the rest of the year to get into the tournament now.
We're dead. And it's November 22. What else can you say? I sure don't have the desire to discuss this team anymore. That mindless and completely inept offensive performance was one for the ages. I wish it were the exception this year.

Where do we find these guys like Lou and kyk? Completely meltdown when we lose a game or two.
To be fair Skinny.
Basketball all winter long is really fun to follow, especially in the B1G and the cool venue we play in.
No need to go all emotional like Lou, but acceptance we are back to a nothing program is a tough pill to swallow

I get it but we are a young team and pike is a great coach. Have a little faith will you. Stop being a crybaby and see how the season develops. You just may be pleasantly surprised!
I had faith into the first three games. I lost 20 percent of it after DePaul. I lost the rest after after last night - that’s how disastrous the loss was and how our team looks right now.

Is it possible that RU had a few bad games and is not indicative of the entire season?

Remember when he called the 2020 recruiting class his best ever? 2 low-major bench players, a mid-major role player, and Cliff (good, but likely not a top 50-level recruit)

How do you know? We've had five games. Lets see how the season develops.

Its amazing to me that we have a group of people on this board who are experts in basketball and football and have all the answers. Do any of you calling for pike to be fired ever look back at the past history of both our football and basketball programs?
Lets take football first, Prior to Schiano coming back as head coach there was outright revolt going on before Ash was fired. Maybe some of you should delve back into those threads that were only three years ago.
And before Pike took over the basketball program we had a real rutgers man as head coach, can any of you tell me what the result of that period was? Do you guys want to revisit that?
Schiano, has us on the edge of a bowl appearance for the first time since 2014 and Pike just came off a year in which we had our first NCAA appearance in 30+ years. Have not either of these coaches earned any grace at all from our fanbase?
No, that is not a losers mentality it is a realistic mentality when it comes to competitive sports at the D1 level. Why is that Schiano and Pike have not earned any leeway from some in our fanbase. It is amazing to me that both these coaches have led programs out of mediocrity and into relevance and some in our fanbase are calling for heads to roll.
I do not know what anyone else is expecting but I did not expect the basketball team to perform year in and year out. We are not Duke. I expect it will take some time for pike to get the mens program and recruiting up to BIG levels. A program takes time to build.

I think Pike should have a statue and not be fired. I have full trust in him. We aren't as bad as we are showing. We are not as good as last year. Pike has got to figure things out with this roster. He has some potentially very difficult decisions to make.

This isnt fantasy football where you can go on you smartphone and replace a guy in the lineup with your finger. every transaction that is made has meaning. When I swap Justin Hebert for Ben Rothlisberger I don't need to think about the impact that makes on my WR or flex spot.

Nervous Lou isn't wrong. This team is atrociously bad right now. And it's directly on pike. His off season comments ar everyone head scratching.

pike is fighting for his job. He won't be able to recover if this spirals out of control and the narrative gets worse. He won't be able to recruit and it will get worse until he is gone inn2 years. It's urgent he turns this around

It looks really bad right now but progress is often not linear. Pike gets a long leash IMO....especially based on the last 2 seasons and how low we were as a program when he got here. We all make mistakes, its how we correct from those mistakes that define us. Lets see how he corrects from this early season failure as well as from players not quite cutting it (either rotational changes or future recruiting or portal).

Also have to laugh at the people looking for media statements of brutal honesty from any coach. I'm a fanatic about RU because I love RU, not because the coach says the team is great. Perhaps an assessment of priorities are in order for some fans out there looking to ride Pike back to Stony Brook.

Are the players really any different than last year? Or is it that the few that left elevated the current players' games so much that we are falling back to normal. Seems like the latter. Thoughts?

No one forced Pike to say this was his best team. He could have said he likes it, there’s potential, etc. But he went out of his way to say it was his best team. And clearly it’s not. Probably one of the worst.

It’s just unbelievable that it has gotten to the point we are talking about this - that’s how bad it is.

We may not be “as bad as we are playing”, but think of how low the bar is. We just lost to an 0-4 Patriot league team at home. Back to back losses to teams that won’t likely have winning records. Even with significant improvement we’re not going to be in the NIT conversation. It’s not like Pike just said - I know we lost some players but if things come together the right way I think we could surprise some people. That’s appropriate coach talk. He pumped this team up as his best team ever. In hindsight that was a ridiculous decision.

Which means we're almost halfway through the nonconference schedule, which is how conference strength is determined.
Are you the same guy who said Miller could never be a good on ball defender in the B1G as a freshmen? I remember because in pre-season I kept saying he will be needed to pressure guards like Young did last year. In fact, his on ball pressure is better.

Stop. We lost to Lafayette and UMass. Barely beat Lehigh. Got schooled on the glass against multiple cupcakes. This thread was called for at the time.

And even if we do turn things around and somehow make an NCAA run (still have a ways to go), the success would/will be about overcoming weaknesses up front (not as a result of the best combination of BIGs ever as Pike advertised). The way Pike talked up our BIG men pre-season was wrong and unhelpful for all involved (including the players as it added unnessary pressure). I’ll bet he learned a lesson from it and won’t do it again.

The post was very appropriate at the time.

You're wrong. The problem with your posts and many others in this embarrassing thread is that you guys let your emotions get in the way of the way team basketball works. You make absolute statements "we're not making the NIT", "Pike should never have said that", and other "the season is over" type posts. It's a long season and teams develop. The team is still developing. The posters who said that Paul should never play again, or that Caleb stinks, or that Hyatt will never work out are singing a different tune now. And remember the following:

Coach Pike knows more about basketball and his team than you or I will ever know.
