At pick #52 Turay was the 8th overall B1G player and 1st B1G linebacker/d-lineman drafted this year. Ash and staff has to find a way to use that to convince recruits all their dreams can come true at RU.and to counter other program's negative recruiting. Turay and Joseph-Day being drafted should give the staff some ammo to help fight the recruiting battles.

Eh, I don't see much coming out of it.

Illinois and Minnesota were the only B10 teams without having a player drafted.

Every team had at least 2 players drafted except.

MSU, Nebraska, Purdue, and Northwestern each had 1 a piece.
Idk I had a high school prospect telling me he really didn't want to go to Rutgers because they didn't put anyone in the league. At least we can say we put two guys there this year.

Yeah Turay in the second round will help us out recruit PSU with the #2 pick, OSU with #4, and Michigan with last years draft having an unreal amount of guys

Hell even Maryland had a first rounder
The issue was not does RU get more or higher draft picks that other B1G teams. The question many young recruits that have witnessed the past few draft less teams and have no awareness of when RU consistently had players drafted has now been answered. If you work hard and have the talent, RU can develop you into an NFL draft pick.

Virtually every team gets players drafted. I don't think it's a real selling point that really swings the pendulum besides maybe in really specific cases where a certain position group is being pumped out year after year by a school but even then, if a kid is good enough they'll be good enough anywhere.

It's not the 60's. You'll be seen and drafted if you're capable, especially at a Big Ten program whether it's Indiana, Ohio State, Iowa or Rutgers.

It's worth noting but "we get players drafted" would be a few notches down on my selling points to any recruit who's also being recruited by any even slightly relevant program

A few years ago I think we had seven players drafted. We do have a good history of getting players in the league.

Most of the young kids RU is currently recruiting have no awareness of several years ago when those players were drafted. For them it's a what have you done lately situation and the answer has been not much. 2 is not a lot but it is in the local headlines and on the twitter feeds unlike last years draft.

The focus at this point is not on out recruiting PSU, OSU, Michigan. They need to when the battles against the likes of Temple, BC, Pitt, Syracuse, Maryland, NCState before they can even dream of beating out the big boys. Having a couple players drafted COULD help.

Exactly...and now they can't throw that in the face of recruits considering RU. Last year they could say they didn't even have anyone drafted.

Eh, I don't know.

NC State had their ENTIRE DEFENSIVE LINE drafted

MD can tell kids they are the only school in the last 10 years to have 2 WRs drafted in the 1st round

Getting Turay and Joseph drafted gets rid of the stigma of having no one drafted at all. It removes a negative which other schools probably use against RU. So not sure if it will get us recruits but at least the draft won't lost us recruits. So kinda a big deal.

When they walk through the Hale Center there is a huge display of NFL helmets of Knights in the NFL...today's recruits are aware of it

Hey we all know that if you are good enough they will find you you. But do these 16 or 17 year old kids know that? They have a short attention span and go by what they see not by what happen years ago. RU having a couple players drafted certainly does not overshadow what many other programs have achieved but you are fooling yourself if you think these kids are not watching and know exactly who had NO players drafted. To their thinking why would I think you can get me to the league when you could not get any of your current players there??? Turay and Joseph-Day getting drafted shouldn't necessarily be used to sell the program to recruits but it definitely can be used mitigate recruits concerns or counter negative recruiting by other programs.

Yeah they are aware that RU has some "old heads" (their term not mine) in the league. Again, they are more concerned with what have you done lately and lately there has been very little on this front.

I think this concept is way further down the list than some of you are making it seem to be. So many other issues are a higher priority to these kids.
The biggest selling point that Rutgers has over all the top teams that recruit against RU is that if they are that good they will play right away. OSU, MICH, PSU... can not make that promise.
How many get drafted is farther down the list. Probably higher on the list than what the uniforms look like or Spring Game attendance but in the general neighborhood.

I think you are grossly underestimating the desire to get to the league for these kids, especially the higher rated kids. After winning games, a good education, and comfort with the staff/players/campus, I don't think anything else is more desired. Facilities, players development, strength and conditioning, and offensive/defensive system fit are all means to the end goals of winning and getting to the league. If these kids believe you will not do a good of preparing them for said goals you have no chance.
As for early playing time, the better kids believe they are so good that they will see the field early wherever they go. They just need to know you will prepare them for their ultimate goal.

If you believe these kids are so confident they will see playing time where ever they go than why would it be so important that Rutgers has people that get drafted? If they are that good to start anywhere they should make the NFL no matter where they play. A complete contradiction of your opinion.
Look at the draft. Kids get drafted from all types of schools. NFL teams don't pass on talent because the team they played for didn't have enough draft picks the year before. This viewpoint is almost irrelevant. And way down the list as a deciding factor.

Wrong again...being confident enough to believe you can play college ball immediately does mean you also believe you can get to the league from any school. These kids know the the NFL is an entirely different animal and they will require significant development to get there. They are looking for the school that all things considered will give them the best chance to get there. No kidding talented players are drafting from all types of schools but they are looking for the one that will maximize the likelihood and has a track record of getting players there.

I doubt these 2 players will move the needle in any significant way. That said, I can say with absolute certainty that the two most important things to recruits are a chance at the NFL and a championship. And that comes right from Jeff Hafley. Those were the two things he used to recruit at Pitt and Rutgers.

This. It might make a difference if we weren’t in the big 10, but when you are sitting in a kids living room trying to convince them of how we can get them to the league, and they also have Franklin, Harbaugh, and Meyer in their ear, getting to the league is not our best selling card

I’m really sorry to burst your bubble and I am very happy for our young men, but having 2 out of 256 players chosen when there are 130 total fbs programs is nothing to brag about. I promise you if you think these 2 players drafted are going to have more of an effect on 4* and 5* kids than Meyer, Franklin and Harbaugh putting boatloads of kids in the league lately, you will only be disappointed

A winning/competitive program that does not get embarrassed by the "B1G Boys" is #1 by a large margin. We need to get there quickly in order to not be mired in mediocrity.

Putting 2 guys in the NFL is better than none but it's nothing that impressive to show recruits. We're losing kids to Penn State, Michigan and Ohio State who are putting a ton of kids in the league every year. And producing first rounders. A B1G program is supposed to have a couple of draft picks a year. So while it's still better than nothing, it really wont' do much of anything in regard to recruiting.

This is a positive trend and a selling point for the staff. Next.

We've had players drafted before. It's nothing new. We had seven players drafted in 2013. And the last time we had two players drafted, our coach got fired after the season. Getting players drafted is great but it's not something earth shattering that never happened before.

How is it a selling point when Rutgers is getting smoked by our Big 10 competitors?

Again, it's not high on the list as to why a kid picks a school. Not a big deal.

Good that the trend is moving back up for Rutgers.

The point it makes is that if you are NFL potential- you have every opportunity to make it here as anywhere else. Plus, you may get on the field sooner to prove it. When we went a couple of years with virtually no one drafted, kids heard, yeah, you can get on the field sooner but that is only because the other players suck and what good does it do you if they can’t coach you up...

Tell him we have 20 + players in the NFL.
At one point under Schiano it was close to 30 players I think.

Ok, then ask him to name them. If you think high school kids respect the practice squad and backups we have, you're delusional. Sure, we've got the McCourty brothers and Sanu, but I doubt they're even aware of more than 1 or 2 others.

Most of these high school kid dont care about what you did in the past. They are more concerned with what has this current staff done as far as winning games and getting players to the league. At least now they can say they have a track record. Btw are you sure about there being 20 plus alums currently in the league? I doubt that is accurate. As for the Schiano days, that has absolutely no bearing on current recruiting
