False. It’s actually the younger fans that hate it the most

The only people I have ever heard complain about this have been on this message board or twitter. I have never talked to someone in real life that actually was against it. Just not sure why there is so much internet vitriol for a tradition that was so widely accepted and so obviously enjoyed.

I don't understand why there is extreme passions one way or another. I think it's cool primarily because of crowd participation but there isn't anything special about journey or the song. Hell, "your love" by the outfield would be awesome if 63k people sang along, not that it's bad...it's not. You have to decide if you want to pump the crowd or the players, then you have to move to a song that 60-70% of the stadium knows the lyrics for participation which really shrinks the pool of songs players get pumped by. Imo, this is for the fans. If the players performance is dependent on the p.a. Guy and music ensemble, we are 17ed. This whole topic is stupid. Just play good music and win.

How long does something take before it’s deemed “tradition”

The concept is amazing. The song...and the cheesy **** associated with it needs to be boxed up and mailed down to Florida with that used car salesmen. It fit his “moxy”

I need to see Joe Mo’s on the field personality before I deem him a song. Wonder what ol Joe listens to

Keep it. Traditions can't be allowed to come and go with coaching staffs.

It's a cool song (the most downloaded song in history) and looks really cool on TV and in person for big games.

Wasn't it like 10 years ago that this board was complaining about how we don't have enough traditions and now we have one but we have a few fans that want to get rid of it because the coach was here when the tradition started left? I'm glad we didn't stop the cowbell because Ralph Sasse left.

Traditions happen spontaneously- that's why having people vote for some other song isn't going to work or have the same effect. Just like Scott Stricklin's Cowbell Viking Chant or whatever that was two years ago. Not a bad idea in and of itself in my opinion but it didn't come off because it was kind of planned and sort of forced. And that's why Don't Stop Believing works, that's why cowbells work, and that's why back in the day the Dawg Pound Rock worked. Things have to occur naturally and I for one would rather see us keep a tradition rather than scrap it because Journey wouldn't sign Jake Wimberley's t-shirt thirty years ago.

And as far Dan "coming up with the idea for Don't Stop Believing"- excuse me for not believing that the most arrogant coach in MSU history would actually take the time out of his recruiting …..I mean marathon training regimen to run it by the Davis Wade DJ whom I'm pretty sure Dan would have no idea who that was or be able to pick him out of a lineup if asked.

I do however explicitly remember people complaining about too many ads during football games around that time. So I'm trusting Rosebowl with this one.

After the divorce, I threw away my ring. No way did I want to pass that Beelzebub halo on to anyone else.
I feel the same way here. We all need to move on.

I don’t my care who had a hand in starting it - I’m for keeping it.

Hell, my kids have grown up knowing we do this at every game. That’s the definition of a tradition - something we’re passing down to the next generation of bulldogs. It’s cool and unique. Why give it up?

So is this a poll thread or just a thread of you telling people to quit doing something they enjoy because you don't like it?

Thats up to you. I don’t feel bad for you feeling bad. I’m just speaking on behalf of how I feel and tried to stay on topic.

What have you brought to this thread, in regards to the OP’s question, other than suggesting that you may need a safe space?

If you want to scream that **** threw your pomegranate stained incisors so be it.....but just know, it’s not unique nor is it a “tradition” to me. Sorry you disagree.

Rubbing the Bulldog monument during the walkthrough....”Humps for Hoops, Mississippi State Style”

Reading and watching this before the first pitch every year....https://vimeo.com/218493451
Those are Bulldog traditions.

A trendy Glee tune that EVERYONE participates in would be far from” unique”...

Dude that song is more family friendly than a song that promotes taking a midnight train while running away from your family to anywhere on this globe.

Trash it since it’s Don Mullins idea - seems pathetic to continue to play it at this point. I would rather play who let the dogs out since it has some connection to us

In all seriousness, I like it. I am not opposed to change though. If it is changed, I think it would be cool to honor Mississippi artist. We have plenty to choose from, Elvis, BB King, Robert Johnson, 3 Doors Down, Jimmy Buffett, Charlie Pride, Faith Hill, Marty Stuart, Mac McNally, just to name a few.

I like it a few times a year. Games that are close going to the 4th quarter. Games that we are dominating a good team. It’s kind of silly in a game against Tulane at 1pm in the afternoon with only 30,000 people there. But using it 1 to 3 times a year would be cool. Don’t let anyone know it’s coming; let people wonder if it will make an appearance or not. The stadium will pop if you do it that way.

And honestly I like the underdog theme. We are the underdog. We haven’t won the SEC since the 40’s. It’s who we are whether we like it or not. And I want to believe we win one in my lifetime.

I like it and hope State keeps the tradition going.

Now, for the UF game, they should play “The Girl Can’t Help it” with a tribute to Mullin and Lee Begley on the Jumbotron.

I would prefer “ You never called me by my name” for the Florida game.***

But “Living on a Prayer” is a good “sing along” too.*** probably more fitting knowing our Football history.

Ask the players. End of debate
I disagree, at the time this song is played the players should be focused on things other than the song coming out of the PA. If the players picked a song it would be something 90% of the stadium has never heard of much less being able to sing along with. The game day experience has to be geared toward the majority of the fans, not just the students. You may ***** about the blue hairs but they are the ones writing the checks that make all that shiney new stuff possible.

I thought you would suggest "Danger Zone". Which, come to think of it, wouldn't be too bad.

Personally I don't like the song but we need to keep it. I swear we have too many people treating Mullen leaving like a nasty divorce. He is a coach and he did what coaches do. It's a business. He moved on and we moved on, or at least some of us did.

I almost want to say keep it for night games only. One of the coolest things about it is seeing the cellphone lights swaying at night, and I have had opposing fans say how much they enjoyed that (not that we are there to give opposing fans a good experience, but still). Most fans and students apparently enjoy it too because the cowbells really get going when the chorus hits.

Cheesy or not, it has become popular, and several media members have referenced it when praising our gameday atmosphere.

I vote keep it, but I am not going to cry if we don't. The product on the field is way more important to me than the product in the sound system.

Commercial Dispatch say Dan chose the song. All during the 2014 season, everyone said Don't Stop Believing was Dan's personal choice. I can certainly believe that some fan(s) were asking for a song before the 4th quarter, because that is not a unique idea. But I would have to see some hard evidence that Dan was not involved in choosing which song to play, since everyone said he chose the song when we first started doing it.

http://www.cdispatch.com/msusports/article.asp?aid=37658

Meh, Dan also claims to be the reason his division wins the SEC each year. If I had to guess, Steve's story is true that a fan pitched the idea, and Dan approved/requested it (but took full credit for it).

If you don't know the answer to that, you either aren't coming to games or don't pay attention to the music in the first place. So why do you care?

That game is one of the reasons I want to keep it. That was the most fun I have ever had at an MSU football game. That whole day was just surreal.

But no one can sing along with it and it's already played in other parts of the game.

You're suggestion makes no sense

My biggest issue with this conversation is that smart people are refusing think it through and look at the song through the context of the entire game while comparing it to what's Already played for 98% of the game.
