Let's recruit Ex-NBA players

When asked about the status of Z, Cal said high school juniors were making $100K in NIL. He also said that every court, to include the Supreme Court, has said that you cannot deny payment for services rendered (basically). So, if the NCAA allows international players who had previously played professionally as well as high school guys who were paid to play, why not recruit ex-NBA guys?

Could you imagine a college team composed of: Isaiah Thomas, Kyle Korver, Udonis Haslem, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Pau Gasol?

This is likely why the rule exists in the first place. But as usual, NCAA rules tend to favor the organizations best at money laundering.

I haven't thought it through, but kudos for thinking outside the box.

If that happens, though, that will be the end of me watching college basketball.
Isn’t that the Big 3 tournament, but I can see Boogie, Patterson, Meeks, Lamb all calling Cal.

But you will watch UK games if Ex-pro International players play, but not Ex-Pro US players? Why? What's the difference?

You don't want Z freed, do you?

It is about time Cal went on the offensive with the Z situation. The NCAA hates Cal anyway so he might as well call them out on a daily basis till the Z issue is answered

I think the answer to that is eligibility.

Those guys already graduated college. Whereas overseas talent hasn't gone to a post-secondary school. They technically would be "students."

I talking about NBA guys who didn't finish college or want to get a second degree. What's preventing them from participating college athletics, earning some NIL dollars, while working on a degree? No different from Z who coming to UK to get his degree.

The NCAA will just tell their crooked referees to bend us over like they did in 2017.

I never understood why Kentucky doesn’t claim a championship every year, who cares if it’s legitimate. Hang a banner

This is what this thread is about right? Dumb recommendations?

No, this thread is about the contractions of fans who want Z to be eligible but totally reject of recruiting Ex-NBA players as dumb. In reality, there is no difference between between recruiting professional international players and professional US players, provided they enroll in classes. If the NCAA is now a semi-pro, this idea will happen eventually. Some school will enroll an ex-NBA player and then sue the NCAA for not letting him play. The NCAA will back down and the flood gates will open.

It's either the NCAA rejects all professional players, International and US, or none. Can't accept one but not the other, legally speaking.

Yeah, I suppose that's always been technically possible. Meaning the rule being a college can't pay for play, but if at 30 years old or so and so enrolls with eligibility left, has made money on his own they can play.

However, I think it's kind of the 3rd rail nobody touches. Probably some kind of an unspoken rule of mutually assured destruction.

Basically, all the tobacco road blue bloods just sitting there with their finger hovering over the proverbial button. Alright Dukie if you bring yours back, I'm bringing mine back. Then UNC says alright ya'll want to play that game we'll holler at the GOAT. Then someone says we'll Kobe was going to come here, then another is like okay we had Dirk or KG on line one. Then there's Texas like, alright we'll bring KD back right the F89k now.

I think there was a movement years ago to get Lebron to come back to some school and play football because technically he could. Also, there have been some minor league baseball players who've played college football.

However, again, when you're a professional athlete it just seems kind of below you. I mean it's like pulling teeth to get a kid to return for a second year as it is...all of a sudden, he's going to leave a big city, money, and that professional lifestyle to come back to Lexington, Durham?

I also don't think the NBA/NFL would allow their stars to do that. Kind of like the no motorcycle or mountain climbing clause in a lot of big max contracts.

I agree with that this is the "third rail" and it really blows up college basketball. However, the same was said about integrating Africans Americans, the three-point line, and more recently, NIL money and the psuedo-free agency. Fans keep showing up to games, despite the amateur facade being completely blown away.

UK would never do it, but all it takes is one school to convince one guy to come back and then sue the NCAA. This would give that school a huge competitive advantage.

For example, last year Arizona had 8 international scholarship players. If they get a one retired NBA guys to come play for them, don't you think they would win the title? For every new player in the NBA, one leaves. These "has-been" don't have any other life skills than basketball. If they don't want to travel overseas, then they could make good money playing in the NCAA while earning a degree.

That's why should go recruit John Wall and Demarcus Cousins, Deandre Liggins and all of them. Nothing the NCAA could do about it.

It would be even worse for football where the lifespan of a player is 4 years in the league and football players don't even have the international option.

What are you even talking about? That makes no sense.

That is going to happen anyway so do what you can to force media attention on the issue.

It took me a while to believe the NCAA bias against UK was real but there is just too much evidence to ignore. Embrace it and call it for what it is, at this point there is no other way to combat the overall issue.

Maryland’s QB has filed a lawsuit to remain eligible as he receives his first Graduate degree. He wants to persue multiple graduate degree. Speculation is that if he is successful, there will be no limitations on years of eligibility as long as you are pursuing a degree.

That will ruin all college sports

I’ve seen nothing like that. If you’re talking about Tagavailoa, he’s petitioning the NCAA for a 6th year of eligibility. He has a legit argument bc he was granted the additional year bc of COVID and the one year he only played 4 games, which allows players to redshirt. He’s petitioning to have that year as a redshirt year, giving him another year of eligibility.

If there is speculation about players being able to play as many years as they want as long as they are taking classes, please share as I’d enjoy reading it.

I mean something tells me Tyler Ulis can still ball. And he's right here. And you know Boogie would come back.

I'd honestly be happy if we could see guys like Ulis, Boogie, Rondo, and Goodwin come back and finish their eligibility.
