Most cities have sections with names. I grew up in Whitehaven in Memphis, TN. Why not name the section southwest of Highway 12 where Mississippi State is located to "Starkvegas". I think for years mail was addressed to Mississippi State, MS. We could officially change that to Starkvegas, MS.

I like the Starkvegas thing. I like that we took what some people wanted to use as an insult and embraced it. I have a couple of Starkvegas t-shirts.

That's about as far as it needs to go. We certainly don't need to officially rename anything Starkvegas.

I'm surprised no business around town has purchased a big neon Starkvegas sign to hang out front of their business. The foot traffic of visitors stopping at your business to take pictures in front of such a sign would more than justify the cost.

Negative. Reminds me too much Mullen. I'd rather that died with "Don't stop believin'"

My college buddies and I have been referring to Starkville as Starkvegas since at least 1992 so I know it was around prior to that. Has nothing to do with Mullen.

Well considering only the Wimberlys of the world were yapping at it, I'm not too surprised. There are so many worst ones but of course since we're MSU, ours gets 17ed on the most.

Only by our own, and mostly just the ones trying to make money off MSU

Starkvegas was way before Mullen

ESPN and SEC network announcer regularly call our city Starkvegas. Why not make it official? Would this be a Starkville city council item or would the University be in charge?

I don’t get the Don’t Stop Believing hate. People attach it to Mullen but I don’t think he had anything to do with it. If I recall, they just so happened to play it before the 4th quarter of the 2014 Auburn game and our fans really got into it and it’s been a thing ever since.

If you were in the stadium when it was played for the Alabama game this year and didn’t get chills, I question if you’re a real MSU fan. That was freaking awesome.

I can't believe I have to say this but there is more to the University than just athletics or the fact that it resides in Starkville. Mississippi State is still the post office address of the University and it should remain that way. The "Starkvegas" moniker is used for athletics and socializing and should remain that way and in fact is about the town, not only the University itself. Could you imagine the word "Starkvegas" in the return address of all the academic correspondence? I'm just not convinced that would be a good look. Or how about trying to recruit top flight educators to teach at State...how would that work? It's a little different than recruiting athletes. "Come be a part of our outstanding engineering department in fabulous Starkvegas!!!!"

Some of us barely survived cheesy '80s music the first time***

I don't like the song when it's on the radio, but it is a cool moment to see the crowd that locked in - some of that feeling comes through even on TV.

That's for sure. I don't even like the casual reference to it all that much, but at least it's in fun. To make if official would be a tragedy.

Because officially renaming a city or a section of a city would serve no purpose. Its a nickname. Just like 'the hump'. We would never officially rename humphery colliseum 'the hump' but we can refer to it as that and even market it all we want. Same with starkvegas. Use it as a nickname and it retains its quirkiness and interest. Make it an official place name and in 20 years its just another place name.

I doubt Mullen had much to do with the music selection. I suppose we should tear down the north end zone expansion too?

It's about as Mullen as the offense he runs. Someone else's idea but he's taking credit for it.

This is the type of post that makes alumni look down their nose at fans that did not attend the university. Stick to sports Hue, academic matters are too complicated for you.

A screen name of "Belle" kinda makes one think that the person is a female. That moreso than what she said.

Remember Hue ... MSU is first and foremost an educational institution. Sports is an add-on, and it's gotten out of hand at almost all colleges. Yeah, it's an outlet for students but it's not the primary reason for existence.

Whitehaven is a place you could get yourself seriously killed these days.

Left Whitehaven in 1974 and have only returned to see friends in the neighborhood about 4 times with the last time being about 12 years ago. 90% had moved away. Whitehaven, like San Jose, CA is in disrepair. It was sad to visit both of them and see what they have become. Growing up there was wonderful though!

No, it is cheesy as hell and officially naming it Starkvegas, Ms would be even more cheesy. Where in the hell did it even come from any way? Last time I checked Starkville wasn't anywhere close (and I don't mean proximity) to Las Vegas. It reminds me of a guy I used to know that tore the Toyota emblem off his Toyota and put a BMW emblem on it. It somehow made him feel cool because he thought his car was something it wasn't even close to.

Whitehaven was my high school stomping grounds all through the 8os. I knew all the streets and back roads. Went to high school over there (Bishop Byrne) and all my wop friends lived over there, owned liquor stores and ran pizza joints. Great times indeed.

If you think the haven is bad, my neighborhood out "east" near Parkway Village/Fox Meadows looks straight outta east LA.

Good thing I turned into a Germantown snob about when I went to MSU. :) Seriously though, white flight has ruined many former "good" parts of town.

Sheeeeet, bro....that's the worst part of Memphis. I remember going to eat wings on Winchester Road, we knew the where the point of no return when we headed down that way.

It is amazing how quickly the cheaply built white flight areas go downhill.

Don't look now but it is painted on the floor of the Hump. Whether you like it or not our university and Adidas have adopted it and the ESPN announcers use it. It is called marketing which has been sorely missing at our school. BTW, the BMW emblem is a bad example. That would be like us calling ourselves Las Vegas which we aren't.

This reminds me of the time I tried to get us to rename Starkville to Gold, Mississippi. Anyone remember that? Didn't take well. I tried to find it on search but no luck.

I agree, and you may or may not know, but the University post office used to be State College, Mississippi. It really should have stayed the same (it was that for years after we became a "university"), if for no other reason than it's easier to say than Mississippi State, Mississippi. There's precedence ... State College, PA ... College Station, TX.

The mailing address is probably about to change to Starkville after the annexation. The City is expanding to the east and about to take in the campus.

Can Starkville annex state property? Why would they want to? To get the population up or something? They'd probably still keep the post office address, even if they do bring it into the town.

I don't really think the city has a say about the PO.

Actually, none at all.

And I seriously doubt that they can just annex the campus.

Vegas would be a complete ******** without MSU.(opinion)

Rant over.
