If they go to 7, I wonder if that would just be used for playoffs and if they would consider organizing the state into districts instead of conferences and let schools play whoever they want in their district. You would have a ton of split conferences with 7 divisions.

I think this has been mentioned before on here.

Just looking at it from the point of view of football and 1A if I counted right the 2019-2020 ADM they used for the current alignment I counted 77 schools under 500 not sure how many of those don't play football but I assume most if not all 200 or less don't of which I counted 15 which left 62 and I'm not sure but I assume some of those probably don't play football ether.
So as far as football I believe I'd rather go with 6 instead of 7 classifications.
That said if it's just a binary choice 7 classifications using only ADM's or the current alignment and forumal I'd go with 7.

Why is it that only the advantaged teams in 1a want the cutoff above 500
What’s wrong with letting the smaller schools play each other
All of a sudden the advantaged schools start whining and crying about maybe having to play a team with a couple hundred more students than they have
The hypocrisy is outrageous

I looked over the 20-21 ADMs and glanced through. I don't think more than 40 of those 500 or less play football.

What was so bad about having 8 division in football ? To me it seemed that was pretty even … especially compared to what we have now

There is no way to make everyone happy or every situation perfect for anyone. Unpopular opinion and harsh reality is this though, a lot of the small school districts state wide could and should combine schools. Would save state and local governments tons of money. I know of numerous attempts through the years that LEA’s tried to shut down a school and combine and the communities fought it tooth and nail, which I understand school and community pride as well. Sometimes we all struggle to see the bigger picture and what’s best because of our own personal agendas. There are going to be unhappy people no matter what is done. Someone will find a reason to say it isn’t fair. That’s the world we live in now

I agree with that but districts also have to be careful with that to avoid students leaving to go to charter schools or avoid charter schools popping up in their areas.

I wonder if they would consider sticking all non football playing schools in their own classification.
I only see one way if you don't do something like that and still be fair to 1A. Right now according to the nchsaa pdf conference realignment there is 426 schools the article stated 432 but going by their own information on their website I'll use the 426 for this.
According to MaxPreps rankings there are 67 1A football teams and according to the pdf I meationed there is 107 1A schools 52 East 55 West so as you said that's 40 non-football schools.
So according to MaxPreps there is 380 football teams total adding the four rankings together so that only leaves 6 non-football schools in the other three classifications combined so while you can divide 7 into 426 you get six classes with 61 schools and one with 60 but that only leaves 1A with 21 football teams since the 40 are to small to move up.
So you'd have to divide the 380 by 7 that gives you five classes with 54 football teams and two with 55. So you'd have to leave the 40 in 1A plus 54 giving 1A a total of 94 schools while everyone else with 54 or 55 plus wherever the other six non-football schools fit in.
Not sure what the cut off number would be in 1A somewhere in the 500's but while I know some off the top of my head I don't know who all the 13 biggest current 1A schools are who would have to move to the new 2A.

Dang, dude. That makes my brain hurt😄. But thanks for the research.
How many teams made the 1A playoffs this year, how many opt outs and how many byes. I could look it up, but my brain cells are shot.

Well you'd about have to got to go from 64 to a 32 team playoff that's probably best anyway.
But I believe this year there was only two byes the two #1 seeds and one forfeit so I guess 61 teams participated.

Everything I’ve read seems to indicate that they’re trying to get away from everybody making the playoffs and also trying to reduce the number of rounds. So, I anticipate 32 teams in the playoffs in each classification if they go to seven.
Seems fair….don’t it?

Certainly that part does. I’ll withhold judgment until the whole “conference/region” thing plays out. Extensive travel for the regular season will negate any advantages this might create.

7 classifications might make it easier for split conferences that are closer in number instead of having Ashe with what 900 some kids playing in a split conference with Elkin at 350 like we once did.

You could keep conferences like the NWC together and then they all go separate ways in the playoffs bewteen likely 1A and 2A.

I hope you’re right. My interpretation is that regular season would be affected, but who knows?

IMO There will be no subdivided playoffs, there will be split conferences or regions instead. You will see the lower participation sports like golf, tennis, track, lacrosse, etc.become 1A/2A for playoffs. 32 teams from each division will make the playoffs with the 5th round being the State Title game. There will be 7 divisions and the breakdown on divisions will likely fall something like this:

1A 0-400
2A 400-800
3A 800-1100
4A 1100- 1500
5A 1500-1800
6A 1800-2100
7A 2100 and up
This will guarantee Reidsville, Burns, Monroe, and most of the top west 2A will win every year. Reidsville's enrolment was 655 (2018-19). No Surry, Yadkin, or Stokes County schools would ever get past the 3rd or 4th round. Mount Airy & East Surry may get that far. Interest in football will drop in many counties. What do you see happening to 2A ? Am I wrong in my thoughts ?

In the 4A West football semifinals three of the schools would be considered small 4A and one of those is now going to be 3A.

The sensible thing is to go to five classifications for the next alignment. Let's make it a two year instead of four and look at changes after the first year that may improve things. If six classes seems to be the way to go then that will be the next step.

Exactly what I’ve been saying. Who’s whining now 😂. I would have thought they would have showed more class than that 😜
