Let’s talk bourbon

I have recently started getting into bourbon a little bit. I have never been a big bourbon drinker, mostly drink wine, but starting to branch out some. What are some of your favorites. Like your everyday bourbons or even some of the better ones you bring out on special occasions

My everyday drinkers range from EC Small Batch, Larceny, Michters Bourbon, Knob Creek. ETA- forgot about my Early Time BiB. $29 for a liter is a hell of a deal on a pretty decent bourbon.

If I am stepping it up to the next price point Woodford Double Oaked, Old Forester Old Fine Whisky, and if you can ever find it Larceny Barrel Proof. I currently have a bottle of Elmer T Lee that I won in a raffle and it is fantastic.

Can’t go wrong with woodford reserve. I just purchased a bottle of old soul that I’m excited about trying.

I like Angel’s Envy, some of High West - both bourbon and rye, Whistlepig Rye. Glenmorangie Lasanta is $45ish and good if you’re looking to give Scotch a shot

Basil Hayden's and Clyde May's Straight Bourbon are my 2 go-tos right now.

Willett Bourbon - I haven’t found anything better than it. Great to sip. Goes down very well with Coke also.

My typical bourbon tastes are Knob Creek, Angels Envy, and Woodford. The Willett is what I will buy every time if it’s on the shelf.

I like the wheated bourbons. I just started drinking bourbon a few years ago myself. I was a Scotch drinker, but the sweet notes of the wheated bourbons are tasty and I never wake up with a headache. Weller is a good place to start. Larceny is my go to. Usually priced $20-25 per 750/ml and worth double. My new favorite is Wyoming Whiskey Small Batch Bourbon.

Col. Forbin is right about the Larceny Barrel Proof... It's my special occasion bourbon.

I have really like four roses. Really good and not expensive. Also like larceny. Was on a 1792 kick for a while. Jefferson is solid although not my favorite right now.

Knob Creek single barrel, Buffalo Trace, and Angel’s Envy are my favorites

Bulleit and Beam’s Devil’s Cut are my go to bourbon’s for mixing although Bulleit is perfectly fine by itself

I’m sure there are better bourbons out there, and I’ve probably had most of them at one time or another, but when you start talking $60 or more for a bottle, it’s just out of my comfort range

Picked up a 1/5 for $15 and have enjoyed every drop. Over the rocks it is smooth and not sweet (I'm not into the Evan Williams or Jack Daniels sweet bourbons). I'm drinking it right now instead of my more expensive Larceny.

High West American Prairie Barrel Select (Armagnac Cask) is legit!
Not a fan of Angels Envy unless I'm mixing. It's a great mixing bourbon.

2nd for EW BiB. That is my every day sipper, usually chilled. Weller Special Reserve when I find it for MSRP. McKenna 10 yr also when I find it for MSRP. BT, Larceny, and Eagle Rare too. Weller Antique or 1792 Full Proof when I want a treat. Won't go higher than $40 for a fifth of bourbon, just feels wasteful.

Can’t go wrong with Woodford or Makers. But I found an outstanding bourbon that’s ridiculously cheap. Evan Williams 1783. Blend of 10 and 12 year old bourbon. Smooth as silk and less than $20 a fifth.

At the “everyday” price point, you can’t go wrong starting out with:

Elijah Craig
Knob Creek
Russell’s Reserve 10
Henry McKenna BiB


BT and McKenna are almost impossible to find in MS right now, and for good reason. Them and the Russell’s 10 are some of the best bang for your buck. Not in the “high end” price point, but they are every bit as good if not better than some higher end stuff. Which is why they are so hard to get your hands on.

You are too late because you missed Henry McKenna Single Barrel Bottled in Bond before it won all those awards and went from $25 to $60 a bottle and was easier to find. I still have one bottle for a special occasion. I still like Heaven Hill Brand Bourbons Larceny, Elijah Craig and I recently found Evan Williams Bottled in Bond that is great as a mixer Bourbon.

I just wrote about Evan Williams BiB before I read your post. My local store has the 175ML for $27. It is real good. Hope they don't put in in any contests like they did the McKenna BiB.

All right you filthy animals. Uncle Joe Lee is in the Christmas spirit.... I know how hard it can be to find what you want. Well I just moved to a place where the bourbon craze apparently has not hit stores and they don't know how to raise the price.

I just bought a bottle of Eagle Rare 10 year and Weller Antique 107 off the shelf for $75 combined.

In Texas I would not have found it with 200 miles for less than$100 a bottle. Buffalo Trace is sitting on the shelves like it's Jim Beam.

Pricey but I’ve really enjoyed Jefferson’s Ocean, Whistle Pig 12, and Kentucky Owl. Popped some Johnny Blue the other day and it was fine as frog hair.

I'm in the same boat, just started with bourbons after many years of avoiding them.

So far I'm liking: Jefferson's Reserve, Elijah Craig, Early Times BiB, Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage, and Rebel Yell Small Batch Rye.

Meh: Longbranch

Bleh: Knob Creek (to me it has a bouquet of KleenStrip Paint Thinner, finishing with a nose of Dial soap)

Depending on where you live & accessibility, my 4 every day bourbons are Eagle Rare, Bulliet 10 year, Weller Special Reserve & Buffalo Trace.

My special collection includes Michter’s 10 year single barrel, Blanton’s, Old Weller Antique & some Pappy.

The main thing is to try a bunch of different bourbons that use wheat or rye, try different ages of the same bourbon family and decide if you like it neat, with ice or water. I’m not a big fan of Bulliet, but I love Bulliet 10 year. There are some I don’t like neat, but love with a little water added. There was a limited edition bourbon out of Knoxville TN that I love on ice. Thats the best part, trying a bourbons different ways to see what you like best.
