Coach Hamilton under a lot of questioning today by the media and rightfully so IMO. Spread on the game was FSU +4.5 and they lose by 4. He chooses to not foul one of the worst free throw shooting teams in NCAA down by 4 with 12 seconds left. Michigan was shooting 66% from the line on Saturday and had missed free throws down the stretch of that game. But let's assume they foul with 12 seconds left and Michigan hits both, it's still only a 6 point game. With the 3 ball and quick fouls, they'd still have a chance. Who cares what the margin of loss is unless you bet the game. The Noles had a chance to still win

Hamilton said the game was over. I disagree.

It was extremely odd, especially in the tournament. And as someone who is looking at lines (I had FSU +4.5) it was the very first thing I thought of.

I hate seeing teams foul until the bitter end in a hopeless cause, but I agree that FSU threw in the towel too soon in this case. When more than 10 seconds are left and it's a two-possession game, the team that's trailing is more than justified to foul. Or at least take a hard swipe at the ball - who knows, maybe you get a steal and a chance to cut the lead to one point?

Probably a 99.9% chance Michigan wins anyway, but FSU should not have packed it in that quickly.

Exactly. Hamilton's quote was "That didn't lose the game for us," which is a BS answer that could be thrown out about any coaching decision. Bottom line is, that with 12 seconds left, a foul gives FSU a < 1 percent chance to win. No foul gives them 0 percent chance to win. As a coach, you go with the odds, no matter how small.

There are reports from near the bench that he was yelling to foul but his kids didn’t hear or just froze and didn’t do it .... he may have been trying to protect his players in the interview. Regardless poor handling of the question .. if the above is true he could have simply said that he didn’t communicate effectively at the end of the game.

He realizes he handled it poorly and has appologized.

I don't know if this was intentional by him or a misunderstanding, but I believe gambling plays a bigger part in sports outcome than many believe. There are too many factors involved that can be persuaded with money. From coaches to players, to officials ect..

You could clearly see Hamilton yelling...I believe he was yelling at his players to foul, but for some reason the guy didn't foul. I also believe he was trying not to throw his players under the bus over that question. I doubt the point spread had a single thing to do with the non-foul at the end of the game.

I think that's a big part of it. The last stoppage had been when Duncan Robinson, by far Michigan's best free throw shooter, was fouled and sunk two free throws to put Michigan up by four. They had probably gotten a pretty good yelling for fouling the best free throw shooter, so the players were probably confused and not thinking about the clock, just that they weren't supposed to foul the one guy that happened to have the ball.

The best explanation I heard was he simply lost track of the score margin and/or clock.....which is "unforgivable" - but in a tight game - 1st time FSU made it that far in the Tourney - a simple yip under pressure is as good an explanation as any I have heard. Hopefully he learned something - maybe he assigns an assistant to help him manage that. The interview was worse than the mistake IMHO because he came off poorly. Learn and move on - that is all he can do.
