Touché. I just know of a few situations that involved a hidden camera and a little bit of weed that changed a few lives. I always respect law enforcement, but that doesn’t mean that the situation in Starkville doesn’t need a complete overhaul.

I think that may be more of an indictment on the state's overall view of weed IMO

A new release from the Oktibbeha County Sheriff's Department says deputies were called a Aspen Heights Apartments because a large crowd of people and cars were blocking streets.

Deputies attempting to clear the streets directed traffic to exit.

The release says Lewis attempted to push through traffic in the wrong direction and was arrested after several attempts to get him to turn around

Last time I checked, drinking and driving was not a crime. Having a blood alcohol level over a certain limit, then driving is a crime. Which is not what Dak had. Unfortunately, most people don’t have the brain power to dig deeper than the surface to get the facts.

Not everybody agrees with that. Just curious, but when was the last time you were in Starkville? Dolph Bryan hasn't been sheriff in a while. Our new sheriff and police chief are both decent human beings and care about the community. If you don't want to have issues with LEOs, don't break the friggin law. It's a pretty simple formula for success.

LE in Starkville has always been shady. I lived through the Dolph Bryan years like most on here, he had an army. I could go on a rant about illegal search and seizures and making guys flip for no reason. One such case they scared this guy enough that he talked his friend into meeting him right next to a church to sell him a quarter ounce of weed, thus he was hit with a bigger charge.

OCSO had a barn jacket with a camera in a button. That jacket fooled a bunch of folks. Nothing beats the time a LEO or former stole a bunch of dope from evidence, hid it under this guys car in a magnetic box because he had a beef with him and called in a tip. Well they soon found out who planted the dope because some of it was still in evidence bags if I remember correctly.

Not to comment on the overall discussion, but only to clarify:
That wasn’t a Law Enforcement Officer planting evidence but an unpaid intern. If I recall, that intern did time for that.

??? Either that's just not enforced in much of the state or you live around a bunch of baptists taking an expansive interpretation of the law.

Please don't invite me to join a discussion about law enforcement in that area. It's one of the prime reasons I will not move back to Starkville. All I will say is there were two boys I knew with pretty much the same charges concerning drugs, not violent and first offenses.

One got probation, the other six years.

The only difference really was one was from one family and one from another.

And thank heavens that incident is not only possible in Starkville but common and is impossible everywhere YOU choose to live.

Has nothing to do with being black. Has a lot more to do with cops on a power trip (black ones and white ones).

I had a very white friend get arrested bc we were waiting on the sidewalk for a ride. We were told to go back inside or leave. Bar was kicking everyone out so that wasn’t an option.

Now my friend got a little mouthy with the cop and then got arrested. Sure it’s a similar situation.

But making it abt race is ignorant. The SPD use to allow the black crowd at level 3 to completely take over Main Street at night and closing time. All the while being up in mugshots running people out and checking for fake IDs.

As someone who has worked with law enforcement, my opinion is that it really depends on the culture of where you are. For years, I worked in a larger city where I would rate the quality of police officers as top notch. I work as a consultant and have taught at many police academies. Recently I began working in a much smaller community and am appalled at the daily violation of constitutional and civil rights. The agency chiefs see nothing wrong with their officers' behavior because "that's the way we've always done it."
