Leadership

I have had some time to think about our program on the 12 hour drive back home from Knoxville.
ive seen and heard some things over the last few weeks that former players and current players have said. I even had the opportunity to talk with Stevens Dad Saturday night.

Ive been team Moorhead the whole way until I saw that crap on Saturday. There are plenty of excuses with injuries, Tommy not being able to get in a groove with injuries, suspensions, 3 first rounders and a ton of NFL talent and leadership leaving the team last season, inopportune penalties, lack of self discipline... but losing the way we have the last two games is inexcusable.

We have former players saying that the coaches aren’t hard enough on them, that they look soft, that they don’t have pride, that they’re more worried about what people are saying on Twitter than what their performance on the field is like and I agree and I’m glad we have former players speaking up about this. They would know!

We have all seen moments where this team has grit and plays angry, runs and blocks angry, tackles angry and just look like we want it and have a physicality about us but more times than not we don’t have any of that.

To me that reflects a lack of leadership. Whether that be on a lack of leadership on the team or complete lack from the coaches on staff. Our defense last season had leadership. Sweat, Simmons, Green, Abrams demanded more out of their guys I believe. It doesn’t appear to me that we have any leadership on this team this year. Somebody has to hold their teammates accountable, slap their phone out of their hands at halftime, somebody has to grab some face masks and demand their best out on the field. I’m about to say it... they need some 17’n strain. These guys have the talent but they aren’t fighting with it all. I don’t see any desperation to win from these guys right now.

Coach is a players coach and I understand that but if they don’t respond to his yelling and actually come out and fight for each other and this program that our former guys have created then it’s about to slip right back into the cellar.

Cohen had a similar first hire with Cann being a players coach but not being demanding or organized enough and then went polar opposite with Lemonis. It’s looking more and more like the same may have to happen here because Moorhead doesn’t have the structure or presence to demand and receive the best out of his players and the players don’t have to give him everything because it’s being accepted. If this doesn’t turn around then we need to just find a new guy to lead this team that has some fire in him and can light a fire under these guys.

I still want to have hope for Shraders upper class men years but that hope and faith is burning real low right now. Sorry for the length of this post.

That is a very interesting thought. Both of Cohen's first hires in baseball and football were guys who were polar opposites of himself as a head coach. As a coach he was such a laser focused, over-organized, fire breather that he earned the nickname 'the intense bastard'. But as an AD he hired two mild mannered players coaches that were not able to organize a game of solitaire. His second baseball hire was still a player guy but seems to have the organization down pat.

Our head coach needs to have the balls to tell the team, "You can play the game like winners, with full intensity, or forever be known as losers. Which do you want? If you want to play like losers, then Get the Hell out of here."

A similar question could be asked of him. The team is a reflection of the coach and he appears soft.

At this point it’s much harder to change your tone and style of demanding more and challenging these guys... just like a teacher in schools. If you let them walk all over you or let students have too long of a leash then they just keep pushing the boundaries and pretty soon you’ve lost control of the classroom. Same with Moorhead... he’s allowed this lack of effort and lack of discipline take root and it’s possible to change that but it’ll be much harder to gain control and right the ship. You gotta come in and be an intense crazy person on the practice field to start things off and then maybe ease up on them when they know what the expectations are.

I agree. This season is gone. We still have the a chance of getting to a bowl if we beat Arkansas, Abilene Christian, and Ole Miss. I have no faith in this happening. When Dan Mullen went 5-7 and lost to South Alabama you could at least see the team get better over the course of the season. And not make to excuses for Dan Mullen, but with a decent kicker we are probably 6-6, 7-5 that season.

The problem this season is that the team looks flat. There was just an all around lack of effort the past 2 games. We tried to fight in Auburn game, but by the start of 2nd half there was no fight left. And we never really looked liked we cared in the Tennessee game. LSU is on another level this season and it is obvious they are going to smash us. I at least would like to see some fight and by this I don't mean we actually try to fight them...which will probably happen.

The only positive from last weeks game was Shrader replacing what looked like a healthy Stevens and our D playing well. I think that was the final straw for Stevens and I expect Shrader to start for the rest of the season. Stevens had his chance at redemption against a garbage team and he blew it. It's over. Maybe he can be GA for Moorehead...I hear he's an offensive guru. I tried to hold my judgment a give to Moorehead the benefit of the doubt, but the complete lack of effort and preparation coming off of the bye-week did it for me. I knew this season was going to be a dud after Louisiana ran all over us, but I really didn't expect this kind of regression. We actually seem to get worse from week to week, at least offensively. I think our defense played well last game, but it was the same story as last season. Defense looks good, offense goes 3 and out on every series.

This season is a wash. The suspensions hurt. The ambiguity and lack of continuity in the QB room has also hurt. Our lack of depth of the d-line has also hurt. This whole season starting with the "QB battle" and moving right into Steven injuries has left me scratching my head. I hindsight, I wish KT was playing this season.

Bottom line. Whether we like it or not Moorehead gets another year. The fans are done making excuses for him and he starts next season on a hot seat. There shouldn't be any QB controversy moving forward this season. We will start next season with no suspensions and no QB controversy. Our defensive should be a lot better next season, if for no other reason that an extra year in weight room for our freshman d-line.

I still support the team and there is still time left in the season for improvement. We likely won't see it vs LSU, but following that game, we have 4 winnable games left. If we make a bowl game, then I can look forward to next season. Right now, however, it seems likely that Abilene Christian will the only win left on the schedule.

What I said two weeks ago. And apparently this will continue until 11/2020. *

The main problem isn't with our other coaches, or Joe's schemes, or game management, or any of that. It's with the way he handles the team Sunday through Friday. He's soft on the team and tries to be a "player's coach" thus losing the respect and discipline that a SEC team must have to compete on game day. Unless he alters his personality to conform to what these players need in a leader to be successful (not only on the field but in life as well), then this team will continue to backslide. Do y'all realize that the team didn't even train on the South Farm before the season? By all reports, whatever preseason prep they did do was a walk in the park compared to season's past. If you listen to the team's alum that are still close to the program, they seem to all have the same sentiment.

Also, I'd say Joe's seat is getting warm due to the fact that his coaching style, when it comes to discipline, is opposite of IB's; and that guy hates to lose, no matter the reason.

Remember when he said Aeris Williams didn’t get playing time because he didn’t give effort in practice? If these guys are getting to play, did Aeris even go to practice?**

I’ll just say this... being a leader in life and being a leader of an SEC football team are two entirely different animals.

Joe’s a guy I’d love to have a beer with, and I’d be thrilled for him to coach my 9-year old. When it comes to the tools and personality required to win in the SEC, however, I’m afraid he just doesn’t have it.
