Lawn mowing advice

We’re moving from twenty acres with a Scag zero turn to a house on a 1/4 acre lot. I still have the zero turn but really no where to store it and it’s major overkill for this yard. I’m torn as to which way to go as far as lawn mowing. I have zero experience with the robot mowers but something about them intrigues me. The push mower is the simplest and I’m perfectly capable of doing it but I’d rather watch someone or something else do it. Hiring someone is the simplest but the most expensive long term. What say ye pack?

My yard is just under 3/4 acre. I like cutting it with a regular push mower. It's exercise and a good stress reliever.

The size of the deck does not matter nearly as much as how you push it. Sure, a bigger deck may get the job done faster, but a smaller deck knows how to handle those tight spots. You also need to be careful where you put your deck to begin with. My wife will not let my deck anywhere near the backyard, but that is a conversation for another day.

Sounds like you may be a little insecure about the size of your deck, but seems like that should make the wife more comfortable with using it in the back yard. So I'm confused by this.

I’m not opposed to a push mower, self propelled most likely, but the appeal of the robot is its potential to mow when we’re not there. We travel, quite a bit and I don’t want to have to return home just to mow. I don’t even know if it’s conceivable for the robot to mow for a week or two while I’m gone. I’m leaning towards hiring it done for the remainder of this year and maybe find a robot or self propelled on seasonal close out.

Never really been tempted to play in the back yard. Front yard is perfect.

When I was a little kid ( a long time ago ) I had to mow our grass with one of these things. Just seeing this picture made me look at my hands for blisters. I hated that thing. I can still remember how excited I was when we finally got a push mower with a gasoline engine. I used the clipper mower for a couple of years and then got the gas model when I was about 9. Sometimes I couldn’t pull the start rope hard enough to crank it so when that hhappened my Dad would crank it for me when he came home from work. That’s all the help I ever got. Had to edge the side walk with an old butcher knife. Still remember the handle was broken and wrapped with electrical tape. This was early and mid 1960’s. Those were not good times but I learned early not to be be scared of hard work. That character building served me well for my whole career but I hated it then and never forgot it.

I may be wrong, but I have a little more respect for men and women who cut their own yards. My yard has become one of my passions. I do all my own mowing, spraying, and maintenance. It saves a lot of money, but more importantly, it has become therapy for me. It gives me time to slow down, talk to God, and step away from the craziness of work and life with two kids under five. So, I may catch some hate for this, but be a man, or woman, and cut your own yard. There is nothing better than sitting back, looking at your healthy Bermuda lawn, and hearing people walking by tell you how good it looks.

Good for you. I had heart bypass surgery a few weeks ago and am currently paying someone to mow my grass. To each his own, but it embarrasses me to have someone else mowing my grass. I can’t wait until I can start doing it myself again. Plus a lot of other stuff.
