Lavin wouldn't be an upgrade at RU. Good recruiter, not great. Horrible game day coach and otherwise.

You realize the bar on an upgrade is pretty low right now. Not a big Lavin fan by any means, but if he get RU into two tournaments over the next 5 years I think most would be very pleased.

Also read the Pitino Arctics this morning, can we come back to reality please. Really hope that Hurley does not go to SJU.

Between his recruiting and his father's respect from the media , St John's will be a prime destination for Jersey talent..

Agreed and it would yet another miss hire. I respect the hell out of Eddie, not meant as a dig.

id take lavin here in two seconds...tourney within 3 years no doubt regardless of facilities...st johns is delusional to let him go...idiots
lol...I don't think so, he struggled with his own players getting to the dance. They underachieved with the talent he brought including some poor character kids. Maybe if he was hired after Waters but the whole is way too deep now for someone like Lavin whose best days are behind him
Yeah 2 tourneys in 5 years at a commuter school, we havent been to the dance since the last century. but youre right, Lavin would be just a horrible choice here.
Fair point...but remember, Lavin had a chance to coach/recruit in Westwood...then he had a chance to coach/recruit to MSG in Manhattan (they still play majority of their home games there, et alone conf tourn there)....not sure he would be able to do as well (or even close to it) if he had to coach/recruit to Piscataway/RAC.

No doubt his former locations did help him to attract some top talent (some blame his coaching for not maxing out to his talent level)...but one has no clue how he can recruit if he didn't have rich carrots like that to entice the young guns to go somewhere else.
Every program has its selling points and yes, if i was recruiting to St Johns, the garden would be my big selling point. yes, the facilities at RU are substandard, but there is a lot to sell about RU. It's location, what a degree from RU means, downtown NB, an on campus arena that was once a house of horrors for opponents and could be again. ....
Don't you think if Piscataway/New Brunswick or the RAC were major selling points to potential top recruits that it would have happened more than once over the past 30 years?

Compared to most other hoop programs...those 3 major attributes aren't positives in most recruits' eyes....and then of course not even having their own basketball practice facilities, basically makes it Strike 4 vs all other teams.

Hell, even the golf course is a selling point. Stuff Yer Face, the grease trucks. jersey girls. the jersey shore,, AC boardwalk. an hour to philly, an hour to NYC. Games against Michiga, Ohio State, Penn State et al. The Big Ten network. it's not a catholic school. Chicago for Big Ten tourney. imstead of harping on what we dont have, sell what you do. Lavin is a hell of a salesman and thats what we need.
normally you posts makes sense but I am scratching my head at this one with your so called selling points for people to come to Rutgers....some of them bordering on ridiculous

St. John's is totally insane, and this is one of the rare times I agree w/Politi's assessment on the situation. I loved the NY Times piece saying Lavin "decided to take time off to recover" during treatments a few year back, as if that was a horrible thing or reason not to extend Lavin.

I'm always wary about hiring a guy without much experience coaching. I know the alum returning thing is nice but it can sour if things don't work. Hoiberg has done a solid job at ISU so you never know though. How many current generation players are even that familiar of the star power of Chris Mullin? The hire has the flash (although maybe not as much with current players), not sure about the substance.

the hire makes the old school St Johns fans happy but there probably is a good segment of fans there that do not like this hire. It could be good but its not a slam dunk but their hires since Carneseca have hit or miss and even the hits like Jarvis, Fraschilla, and Lavin have had their detractors. Its a good job but not a great job. They are not going to get anybody dropping down from a power 5 school to coach them. Their presence is diminished not only in the city but nationally. This is a school that has watched Nova and Gtown thrive for years where they were just a marginal NCAA program.

That's understandable...but remember, almost all hires by schools are those with experience...and probably less than 50% of those hires end up being successful...so maybe its not much of a gamble for St Johns to hire Mullin.

While Lavin did "ok" in the Big East Regular Season...they were 0-4 on their home court during Big East Tourn (kind of a big deal for St Johns and MSG), plus, many subway alums stopped going to MSG to see their Johnnies play...as they were 2nd to last in Big East attendance.

I do think just having Mullin as HC, St Johns will gain more interest, get more publicity from NYC media, sell more season tix...so those are 3 nice wins/easy lay-ups to start...but that won't guarantee future success on the court.

I sense that a famous St. John's alum was behind the hire
