My god we make the shot and not one defender picks up the UMass player and stops him from dribbling up the court untouched OMG
I have never seen such poor coaching in my life
As an addendum his decision to leave Caleb in at the end of the game when the guy has not made more than 1 lay up in the last 6 games is mind boggling and of the other coach who in every game is smarter than Pikell fouls him the second he gets the ball and we all know what happens next!!

did anyone actually expect Caleb to make his free throws....one bad decision compounded by not calling a timeout to set up the D for the last play

oh and while he made it, not a fan of running that play for Paul as your game winner

The question is why?

Zappa. I coach my share youth basketball. And I can tell you over the last 10 years ...i have had a team score to tie or take the lead under 10
seconds at least 6-7 times . If I had a time out , EVERY time I called time out to tailor a defense to be mentally settle down the team from being excited from taking the lead and be focused.

You have to be prepared for that situation and he wasn’t prepared to call the tine out there ....

Same here. I coach at the high school level and have coached jv and varsity. You always take a timeout if you have it there to set your d. There are no more offensive possessions left so what are you saving if for. The offense has the advantage when the d isn’t set and is retreating

ABSOLUTELY CRIMINAL

getting beyond no timeout called, but NONE of our players even bothered to cover the ball handler allowed him to dribble uncontested right to the 3 point line while we all ran toward the hoop like idiots

Pike trying to say we had the guy covered is a ******* lie

Yep, saw that in his quotes. You don’t let the guy get off a normal three in the front court period. Call time out and set the d. It’s clear as day he doesn’t know what the f he’s doing and I don’t think the staff does either unless he tunes them out

EMBARRASSING OUR INTELLIGENCE TO SAY THIS

Kid makes a heck of a play, and I thought it was well-guarded too,”“Mawot did a good job of challenging it, contesting it, and it went in.”

INFURIATING...YOU MAKE IT THAT WAY WHEN THE OTHER TEAM HAS A BAD DEFENSE AND YOU ARE SCORING AT WILL.

I didn’t want to make this an 85-83 game. Down the stretch we didn’t get the stops that we needed to.”

Paul, Ron, Caleb, Mag, Cliff not one shread of bball IQ or court awareness or a sign of them being coached

Bac ...that’s not on cliff or Ron whose job is to get back on defense there

The guards are supposed to pick up there...

But If you call time out ...you get to reset that

@bac2therac you have a much different tone about Pike this season

I tip my hat to you for being able to see it for what it is

i am just calling xs and os

and to be honest I saw issues with this team last year, that 5 game losing streak and blowout losses, the embarrassment to Nebby and the ridiculous collapse vs Minny bailed out by JY not to mention a similar one vs Clemson bailed out by Geo and then the epic choke vs Houston

all the signs were there

Pike did a great job getting his unit to work hard the past two years but remove a couple of players and he cannot hide it with band aids and a dynamic player like JY bailing him out.

To be fair....Paul did point to him for someone else to pick up and defend. Paul was preoccupied waiting at half court for the inbounder who was 20ft away from the ball.

I agree but damn they have voices, I know everything happened really quick but you gotta make sure someone is guarding the inbound,

i know they have to practice a play like this

There was no mystery coming into this game.UMASS was going to shoot 3 pointers and they were going to play zone defense,Rutgers scored more than enough points to win the game but the defense was totally clueless on stopping 3 pointers or defending drives to the basket without fouling. Its rather obvious that Rutgers players lack the lateral quickness to play man to man defense against mediocre competition.

Bottom line we should have never been here to begin with. This should have been an easy win for us. I think this team is talented enough, but if they don't figure it out soon we are going to be in for blood bath when the B1G schedule starts.

That is probably a product of Pike rotating so many guys in and out of the lineup that nobody knows who's got who in those situations.
I hate to blame coach for everything because what he did that last two seasons was really really good. But you’re right. Someone HAS to be on the ball and immediately. Under 5 seconds on the clock and Umass went down the court unimpeded. Seriously, less than 5 seconds. I don’t get it.

JESUS!!! I just saw the ending. The fact that NO ONE thought to immediately pressure the ball/inbound after the make, is all I need to know. That’s awful
All you have to do is call timeout and that takes care of itself. Does he know it doesn’t carry over? I don’t blame the kids, they were put in a losing situation of the last shot , the coaching staff let them down and shoulda taken the blame. Did any of the kiss *** reporter ask him about this or write that he screwed up?

Agree, we should have called a TO. But it's not true that the kid was wide open. He made a very tough 1 in 5 kinda shot.

Apparently Pike thinks the last play was well defended Shelly
It’s even worse when he tries to reason it. If we call a timeout , set the d and the kid hits a halfcourt shot you live with it . Such a joke that he thinks it was well defended. We let him get a normal three off

We could really use maybe like a decently quick guard who’s supposed to be good at playing on ball defense to put some pressure on the ball handler there.

I mean we have one, he’s just sitting on the bench and hasn’t played a minute yet this season.

He did , but it’s a normal half court shot that he didn’t half to rush. If we call timeout and press we eat the clock up
