I don’t know how to embed it but did anyone see Kylin’s Instagram post? About season potentially getting canceled and Not wanting to go home because his “hometown isnt peaceful and people getting “kilt” every day”. Is he being dramatic or is Columbus that bad?

I haven't been there in almost two years, and that was on several football weekends (did it for years), but I never felt like I was in danger. Nor was my vehicle vandalized. Maybe the town has changed, but I doubt it.

Even if football was canceled, wouldn't he still be on campus attending class? More opportunity to study as well.
Maybe some for attention. Columbus has really declined over the last couple of years. Shootings downtown are a regular occurrence. I know 4 people who have had their windows knocked out because the left a bag on the front seat. Two at the hospital ,one at wallmart and at planet fitness. This prolly happens everywhere, but getting more frequent in Columbus. Still not Chicago.
I've Lived my whole life in Columbus MS and it's definitely not as bad as he portrayed it in his message. I've been to every parts of The Friendly City in my 44 years with not one incident to report!! Of course if your looking for trouble or hanging around BS people **** can get ugly rather quickly like everywhere else in America!!
That's a shame. I grew up in East Columbus in the 80s. It was a great place to grow up. Awesome town back then.

Pretty sure that's more than we have here, and I believe would work out to a higher rate than Jackson. Maybe I should've been more concerned when staying at a hotel there.
St. Louis earned the title of deadliest city in America with a murder rate of 60.9 per 100,000 in 2018. In that year, 186 were slaughtered in the city of a population of about 318,000.
2018 Columbus with 30 murders & population of 24K makes their murder rate per 100,000 about double the 2018 deadliest city in America.
If I’m not mistaken I read where Lee county only had 8-9 homicides last year and that’s with a population pushing 100k
I got a little lost a couple years ago and had to stop while a drug deal went down between the car ahead of me and a guy in a yard.
It would be nice with his new found fame as an agent of change, and having recently been awarded a key to the city, if KH would use his platform as an agent of change to address the terrible black on black crime that exists in Columbus and so many other places. I don't know if the NCAA rules allow it, but a public service message from him could be dynamic. Young black men would be much more likely to listen to KH than they would to most other people.
I used to live downtown in one of the lofts. Was very cool and easy access to Harvey's, Cafe on Main, Broussards, Hucks, and the Princess Theater. However, it was getting bad right before I left (about 4 years ago). There was a shooting at the Princess Theater, just less than a mile from my loft.
I've had some good food and times in Columbus. Probably put down 10 beers and a dozen wings at the Princess for $25 one too many times. Never felt like I was in danger downtown but i havent been all over the town. Stayed at the Hyatt for several weeks for work and the area around it was fine. I have no idea about the neighborhoods around the town.
I grew up in Columbus in the mid 80s-90s. I would voice my concerns about safety when I went to visit my parents in the early 2010's and the dismissed it. After they moved away and went back to visit they felt the same. I don't many people who use to live there and comeback who don't feel there are safety concerns especially at night.
I think your are right. I googled Columbus MS murders 2018 and it looks like the article I read was for Columbus GA. I watch the WTVA or WCBI news and it seems like somebody is getting shot in Columbus on the reg. I thought the # was high but didn't question it.

As with most cities, there are good and bad areas. Unfortunately, the only thing many of these kids know is those bad areas. I can't blame them for not wanting to go home. After all, most of them will tell you that playing ball was their ticket out.
Wow. That is a startling statistic. I work in Columbus often, but just go straight to my destination and to one of the nearby restaurants. So, it's not like I have much experience in the town, but I've heard some chatter of it being rough when eating lunch or working with people who live and work there.
I've always thought Columbus was a very underrated town when it comes to food. There are some really good restaurants in Columbus. You won't hardly find a better lunch than Huck's.
I don’t personally have any knowledge of Columbus’s crime rate today, but I really don’t understand why so many people on here are crapping on Kylin for making this statement.
There are occasionally kids coming up through the college ranks that come from white collar families, but there are a whole lot more(especially in the South) that have nothing, and I mean nothing to fall back on outside of college athletics. To me, he’s not trying to be dramatic. He’s just telling the powers that be that if you take college football away from a lot of these kids, you aren’t protecting them. You’re pushing them towards things that may be even worse than Covid

I think more people would take him seriously if he worded his tweets better. He could have said what you did. However he uses the word kilt. Kilt.

At age 65 I am a life long resident of Columbus. Growing up here, it was a good, safe town. As the years have gone by, the areas where you felt like you should not go after dark have grown and grown. Now days, there are sizable portions of our town that I would avoid day or night. With that being said, just use a little common sense and you will still be safe. Downtown and a north Columbus are good. Parts of East Columbus are good. However, parts of East Columbus and South Columbus have lots of areas that I don’t consider safe anymore. It’s sad as I always loved my hometown. My kids and grandkids also live here, otherwise I would probably leave after all of these years and move out West. I am crazy about the Northern Rocky Mountains States. I blame the local Government, police Department, and the decay of our society in general for our fall. Sadly, many if not most towns in Mississippi share the same problems that Columbus has.
