How is a blocked punt the fault of the punter? I just can’t see how you can say he was robbed when he finished 13th in the nation in average punt. Could you make an argument he deserved it? Certainly but to say Azaria wasn’t worthy is ridiculous.
He could have done more on this play to avoid the block, IMO.

Korsak's performance this year by far surpassed what the SDSU punter achieved.

Once Korsak announced he was returning it was obvious that the SDS kid, who was the media darling, would win.
No surprise, but very disappointing. Korsak's numbers were outrageously good.

To be fair, I think one of them was kicked into his own players' back, so that one would be on him.

Apparently the definition of punting is simply how far you can kick it. These awards are always driven by the simpletons.
Same reason defensive players don’t win the Heisman. Most of the voters are idiots. For example, Suh 100% deserved it.

The powers that be named 2 Big Ten guys in the final three to divide voters who might support a Big Ten punter... the SEC-based organization wanted anything but rival Big Ten winner. (that's a guess.. of course).

He set an NCAA record for Net yardage… which is a much better indication of punting skill then gross yards per punt…. Aries also had 14 touchbacks ( leading the argument he just punted the ball as high and far as he could) Korsak didn’t have 1 tochback all year and you have to go back to 2019 for his last one

He set an all-time record for net yardage, but finishes 2nd? Nonsense.

as someone else said above - simpletons.

In cave man voice …”He kick ball far , he best”

14 touchbacks - that’s not very skilled. As someone also said above - just trying to kick it far

also not very skilled is that block. That’s absolutely HIS fault. All he had to do was take a side step to his right and he would have had a clear path. Instead he kicked it into the back of his own player

watch that play (particularly the angle from the end zone) and ask yourself this: in that exact scenario is there ANY chance that Korsak does NOT see that and adjust? There is ZERO chance korsak would have been blocked there. Zero. He would have adjusted. We’ve seen it over and over again.

The SDSU kid ONLY looked at kicking the ball as far as he can and never saw the breakdown

korsak can’t sweat this. It is what it is

Korsak punts like nobody I've ever seen. He has a huge arsenal of punts. He is a magician. The SD kid just let's it fly every time. Not knocking him because he has an unbelievable leg. If I'm a college head coach and I can choose any punter for my team I would choose Korsak. Can't just look at numbers but if you do the only number that matters is net punting. Korsak just set the net punting record ( if I recall correctly)

To this point, if my punter is at the 50, I don't care how far . . .or pretty the punt looks if I'm giving the other team the ball at the damned 25 yard line. Punting is an art form and an extension to your defense; field position counts BIG TIME.

Korsak's achievements:

Korsak had a net punt of 45.34, which was first nationally and an NCAA record. He pinned 37 punts inside the 20-yard line, with 15 pinned inside the 10 and four that were downed at the 1.

He also had 19 punts of at least 50 yards for an average of 45.9 yards, a program record, with no touchbacks. Korsak has had 122 consecutive punts without a touchback going back to 2019.

Again, these stats should have made the Ray Guy vote a no brainer.

No justification in my opinion.

Funny how you guys think the people voting watch all these games.

Of course not, but if I was tasked with a vote, I'd feel my responsibility goes beyond "who kick ball farthest." ( Add whatever caveman voice you like to quoted portion.)

Or even have a clue about which stats are important and which are meaningless.

Are you suggesting that someone voting on the BEST punter should overlook as trivial a stat as . . .field position???

I get that different stats hold different weight to those that vote. I believe that most coaches would hold field position pretty close to the top of their list.

13th in average punt? What does that matter? Being 1st in net average that just means there were 12 people who kicked it farther than him but allowed for longer returns. Big returns are game changers and can cause huge momentum swings. Korsak consistently pinned people deep, flipped the field, and prevented anyone from having a chance at getting a return. Araiza has a big leg, but without the hangtime and accuracy, you get returns that negate the distance. Which kicker helped their team more? Araiza has 6 more punts on the season than Korsak so the sample sizes are comparable. With 6 more punts, Araiza has the same number of punts inside the 20, 7 more returned punts with 198 more return yards which is the reason why his net avg is a full yard less than Korsak. Oh yeah, don't forget the 15 touchbacks to Korsak's 0. Punting is not all about kicking far. It's about field position, touch, and accuracy. I'm curious who the coaches would have chosen as punter of the year as they actually understand that a big leg only means so much. If I had to choose one punter on my team, it's Korsak. After him, there would be at least 3 or 4 others before Araiza.

Watching the SDSU Bowl game and looked up more stuff:

Net punting at 45.34 yards vs SDSU punter at 43.05, 37 of 70 punts were down inside the 20-yard line with 15 stopping at the 10-yard line or closer including four at the 1-yard line and no touchbacks this season.

The SDSU punter had 76 punts with 15 touchbacks and only 36 inside the 20 yard line. 🙄

According to Ray Guy Award website:
"Punters are evaluated on their overall statistics and contribution to the team. Particular emphasis is placed on the following statistics; net average, percentage of total punts inside the 20-yard line and percentage of punts not returned."
