Four of the area’s top performers on the gridiron have also earned all-state recognition.

Four of the area’s top performers on the gridiron have also earned all-state recognition.

Mountain Island Charter’s Elijah Burris, Tony Davis of Hunter Huss, Shelby’s Jack Hollifield and Kobe Paysour of Kings Mountain were named to the 2018 All-North Carolina football team, according to a list released Thursday by USA Today.

Burris and Davis were named to the first team, while Hollifield and Paysour were recognized as second team performers.

This past season, Burris broke the Gaston County single-season rushing record with 2,832 yards, to go along with 34 touchdowns. For his work, he was named the Southern Piedmont 1A Offensive Player of the Year.

Burris now has 5,284 career rushing yards, exactly 400 from setting a new all-time county record currently held by South Point’s Tyler Bray (5,684 yards).

Davis served as safety for a stingy Hunter Huss defense that yielded 181.5 yards and 8.1 points per game. A Duke commit, he defended four passes and caused two fumbles en route to helping his team to a 13-1 mark and a Big South 3A title.

Following in the footsteps of his brother Dax - now a linebacker at Virginia Tech - Hollifield played a key role in helping Shelby recover from a 1-3 start to win 12 straight and a state championship.

The Golden Lions sophomore was second on the team in tackles (93), along with defending four passes, two fumble recoveries and an interception returned for a touchdown.

Much like Hollifield, Kings Mountain’s Paysour made the most of his sophomore campaign.

The Mountaineer receiver caught 79 passes for 1,732 yards and 26 touchdowns, all of them school records. His effort played a key role in helping his team to a 12-3 record and a berth in the Western 3A final.

Young Mr. Paysour picked up two more offers today. One from the USC Gamecocks and the 2nd from UNC-Charlotte. Already holds an offer from UNC. A lot of interest from a bunch of others that include Georgia, Tennessee, and Virginia Tech. Hearing Georgia may be the next to offer. Congratulations young man!

Hearing KOBE has a new QB from Texas coming to KM next season. Hearing the QB is 6’5 with a great arm
Hearing Crest has a new center coming in from their usual pipeline! Couldn't pass up on that opportunity. lol

On a serious note, Kobe is a special kid and deserves everything that is coming his way. Sky truly is the limit for this kid. The Cleveland/Gaston County area as a whole has a great deal of young talent that should make next season very entertaining to watch.

And on that note, Paysour and his teammate Wilson just added to their lists by receiving offers from N.C. State. Dontavious Nash from Huss just received an offer from Auburn.

Add the Georgia Bulldogs to KP’s list of offers. Predicting VT and Tennessee next amongst the big boys. Paysour has also received offers from Duke, Appalachian St., and Coastal Carolina in the past few days. The flood gates are now open.

Appalachian St is more of a big boy than Tennessee.

As predicted VT offered KP today. Syracuse offered Wilson. Best friends racking up offers together with two more years of high school ball left...

Heard KM qb already in school since first of year. His go to receiver coming after school is out in Texas, kid said to be really good baseball player. Big strong arm qb, his favorite receiver, Kobe too, if all this is true KM will be a force.

The kid is from Newton Conover. He played JV his 9th grade year then move to Texas where he played JV there as well. Alright arm not to fast looks to run if 1st option is not open

Same kid, not a very accurate description. I watched the kid a couple weekends ago and he could be one of the more athletic kids on that side of the ball except for Paysour. Very adequate arm and seemed to be accurate as well.

I don't think anyone is delusional enough to think that the kid is a K. Wade type but appeared to be promising.

Haven't heard any talk of a receiver from Texas. Is there a source for that or is that just scuttlebutt?

Might be just a rumor, but the person I heard it from seemed to know what he was talking about. Find out soon I guess.

I just made a assumption off of game film I’ve seen of him. Haven’t seen him in person. The season is almost here we will see pretty soon I guess
