I don't believe so. Really no reason they can't talk about them now but maybe Ash, and/or other coaches, prefer to wait until they're on campus. Who knows?

The whole PWO area is a bit tough to follow & sort out as far as 'rules' - but what I believe is the case is that the PWO needs to have made their way through some 'official' on campus orientation and/or made an initial fee payment of some sort signifying an 'official' intent to attend.... then the coaches can discuss them & can begin to interact with them in accordance with prevailing coach - athlete rules.

Barbir is big and athletic enough to play some DB - not sure where you read that he played any significant time at on defense have not seen anything indicating that he has recorded any tackles.

Alex Daniel Barbir - South Forsyth High School Cumming, GA
is listed as being anywhere from 5' 9" to 5' 10" and 175lb to 195lb

while

Jared Smolar - Valparaiso High Varsity Football, Valparaiso, IN
is listed as being 5' 11" and 200lb to 215lb

They may both be athletic - but Smolar is a bit bigger - but probably not so much that it would make an appreciable difference
I'm sure this won't go over well based on where it came from but just to prove I'm not crazy, an interview with barbir's kicking coach in Georgia said it...

Playing DB in high school is not going to make a big difference whether a kicker get a scholarship to kick in college. It is unknown if Ash would have offered, he said he would honor all Flood commits.
Are you sure? With RU's lack of depth at DB? An athlete is an athlete...just a thought.

Wasn't Barbir the very first recruit Ash sent an Assistant to visit? Before Russo and Rene. I doubt that coach Okruch would have visited Barbir first if it was questionable whether they'd honor his commit...we'll never know and it doesn't matter, but my guess is Ash saw something important in Barbir's skill set that he thought was important.

You really think he is capable to play DB in the B1G? I don't know what to say.

Hopefully this will stay an RU commit thread.
Info about Jared is what I'm looking for, another school's kicking commit doesn't interest me.
Even if he flipped from RU to another school.
To often once a PSU commit is mentioned, some posters bring that recruit up more than they do the RU one and thread gets hijacked.
My Thanks to those who are sharing what they know or found out about Smolar.
It seems to me Jared might be trying out for the Punter and KO spot.

I'm thinking Michael Cintron, who will be a RS Soph, can be a hell of a punter in the future. Kid is 6'4" and avg'd 51 yds/punt against Wisky last season. Smolar may have a had time winning the punter job.

That article is incorrect about Barbir kicking a 56 yard FG as a senior. His senior season, his longest FG was 34 yards. As a junior, he may have kicked a 56 yarder, but definitely not as a senior. The article is a product of the Pedd State hype machine, building up every recruit to be a super star before they step onto campus. Blacknall was supposed to be the next Kenny Britt, but, even better, remember the one with Mike Gesicki as "little Gronk"? LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Punting and place-kicking are 2 different skill sets. It's rare to excel at both in the same season. A prospect can be a nice "combo" kicker at the HS level but it pretty much stops there so they can concentrate on perfecting one of them.

There is also David Bonagura, a RS Junior. 6'0" and 245 pounds. His bio says: the 48-yarder led all New Jersey high school kickers in 2012 ... led the state in kick points scored for the season (68), points per game (5.7), touchbacks (51) and 14 punts inside the 20-yard line as a senior.

You really need to grow up man. Seriously. Blacknall has and will continue to play, so will Gesicki, and frankly he was only benched because he kept dropping crucial balls. You're also way off base on Franklin because he has lost kids this year for NOT promising them positions they wanted. He lost another kid because by the time he was ready to accept the commitment the kid was recruited elsewhere. It happens and its life.

Barbir was fantastic until he wasn't an RU commit anymore. Now your new kicker is suddenly the messiah and even better because Ash. He may prove to be phenomenal and that's cool but no need to bash the skills of the kid you wanted really badly over a month ago. Later...

In fairness,GSGS did not bash Barbir--just pointed out that the story on BWI was factually incorrect--check his stats--BWI was wrong. And what's wrong with us celebrating the skills of one of OUR recruits? As far as Blacknall and Gesicki, they have been unspectacular so far, but PSU was pretty deep at WR, and Gesicki, by your own statement, had a bad case of dropping balls.

I need to grow up because Blacknall and Gesicki have been very disappointing to-date? Maybe the ones who need to grow up are all your PSU buddies who send Gesicki 30 tweets a day telling him that he sucks.

"Only benched because he kept dropping crucial balls?" That's like saying the Yankees Stephen Drew was only benched because he was hitting 0.150, or Ivan Nova was removed from the rotation "only" because he kept on getting hit hard.

I'll be kind here and not mention that before Gesicki was benched, he was good for 2 penalties a game, and he can't block worth a lick. Thus, he was "only" benched because (1) he kept making crucial drops, (2) can't block, and (3) is a penalty machine. Back to my original point - "Little Gronk" - LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reppin_Jerz now is starting to post like a cult member putting down RU commits by posting this:

Maybe he's a RU fan that grew up liking PSU and Paterno, but he's starting to look like the RU fan is not the case and just a Nit in Knight's armor.

How do you know Ash is a man of honor? The only reason why you say that is because Rutgers hired him. You have no clue what kind of man he is. Do you think he is a man of honor because he honored all commitments? Is he not a man of honor because he didn't honor his commitment to his first wife?

Babir kicked a 52 and 56 yard field goals as a junior. That is not a product of hype. The article might have gotten the year wrong but it did happen. Blackwell and Gesicki still have two year to prove themselves. It to early to write them off.

Look don't try to preach about honor here unless your willing to admit Paterno had not one bit of honor in him and the cult that worships him is without honor as well.
As for Ash's first marriage, unless you know something about why it broke up STFU about it and talk about how your school hired a president that was involved in a rape cover-up at FSU and a FB HC that got away with with contacting a victim that members of his Vanderbilt team raped .
Those hires proves that FB still came before common decency at PSU , even after the President,VP, AD and FB HC covered up their Coach Emeritus molesting a child and the most they did was tell him not to bring children on campus anymore.
But what can you expect from a school that gives someone Coach Emeritus status a little after he was accused of child abuse while the Nit's DC.

Back to what this thread is about: Jared seems to be more developed as a Punter -KO specialist and RU might plan on using someone else for FGs

Sandusky's defenses made Joe the Enabler the winner he was in football.
Too bad there wasn't something that could have made Joe a winner in life.

Is this what you all actually believe? I promise I'm not flaming or anything like that I'm just trying to understand, what you just wrote their has absolutely no merit or truth outside of a sports message board... Do u take all the stuff that's said on an anonymous message board that seriously? Dude the only reason to bring up paterno and what not for ya'll is simply to yell and troll penn state on ur own board, if that's what you want to do have at it but there's so many more cases that have happened with child abuse etc and u never hear a peep from ya'll about those.

I personally hold Joe in very high esteem bc of his donations to the university and annual huge contributions to special Olympics pa. Do I wish that Joe had done more? Absolutely, do I believe Joe did what HE THOUGHT was the right thing? Absolutely.

The paterno thing from ur guys perspective is a dead horse that has been beaten over and over again. Obviously Penn Staters love and respect Joe and that won't change, obviously ya'll hate joe and that won't change. So why keep yelling and harping about it 5 years later? No disrespect but it's pathetic.

It's "there".
And you could say that Joe Paterno overcame the two biggest obstacles in his college football career: keeping his numerous criminally arrested players mostly out of jail and on the field, as well as at best pretending that children were not being abused by his then- and former defensive coordinator, in order to not potentially blow up PSU's football program. So in the end, he was a highly-esteemed scumbag.

In 40 years or so there's going to be a legion of really weird looking old people...breasts sag...pecs sag, bellies balloon, necks dangle...and formerly cool looking barbed wire tatts and Celtic crosses and whatever tramp stamps maybe popular now will look really silly and funny then...hopefully they'll enjoy them while relatively young!

Six players were arrested because the recently fired head coach failed to promote an atmosphere of discipline, and were almost immediately removed from Rutgers football. RU's best player this year. was arrested based on an unsubstantiated allegations of assault after removing his girlfriend from a fight, and remained suspended until the charges were dropped. And after that, I did not hold Flood in "high esteem", despite his documented charity work and appearance in "be the hero" sober driving ads.

On that note, the rest of your post is a sobering example of PSU fans holding college football to a sickeningly high priority. Rutgers football will ultimately be fine, and PSU football can remain with the stigma that a monster was employed by and allowed to roam the university's athletic facilities. All you need to do is deny, obfuscate, deny, deflect, after all..

While it is great to bring in a guy who can pk and punt, I would think most staffs would prefer to have him focus on one spot.
