Just note that Chris Sailer on ranks players that pay to attend his events. There was a camp in NJ this year but it rained that day so I'm sure a lot of local kids didn't attend. With that said, this guy looks good as a walk on.

How does PWO work? Do you have to reach the top two or three on the depth chart, then you get a scholarship?

It is fine with me if all he does is kick as long as he does it well. Good kickers do more than score , they also have a huge impact in the field position game so I don't care about any other position, just kick really really well.

Ash, like many, many, many other coaches, leans in the direction of encouraging PWO candidates for kicking positions & when they establish themselves - and demonstrate that they can remain composed (and not come unglued) in a deafening B1G stadium filled with screaming fans - then they will earn a scholarship.
Ash stood by his word & was willing to honor the commitment that Flood had made to Barbir - but once Barbir flipped to PSU, Ash was not inclined to put a full scholarship out on the table for some other kicker with only high school experience - even if it was one that ranked significantly higher than Barbir -it is not an evaluation of the potential of any of these high school kickers, it is just the strategic approach that Ash has toward recruiting for the position - and clearly Ash is not alone.

If he wins the job in preseason camp in August, he could be given a ship effective in September. Not saying he would be, but he could be.

Really important pick up. I know ships are not plentiful, but we have all witnessed how bad kicking puts the team in terrible positions which, too often, result in the other team either scoring or getting great defensive field position. Glad we didn't lose him to someone else offering a ship.

Hey if the kid is willing to come as a PWO then I don't see the big deal. If we are still at risk of another school coming in with a late offer of a scholarship then its a different story. Certainly a need and a bonus if he is a candidate to both kick and punt.

One has to wonder, with all the different national kicking ranking services, how coaching staffs determine which kickers to offer a scholarship to and which to wait until after NSD to offer PWO? It seems like such a crap shoot. Was the current RU kicker Cintron a national ranked PWO or just a local regular walk on?

The only drawback to the PWO route would be the potential risk of the recruit being enticed to move (flip) to a program offering a scholarship - and once the recruit is enrolled, that risk is minimized (partly because a bond is formed & partly because there are a few feet of the many many yards of 'general transfer rules red tape' that also will apply if a PWO wants to transfer)

For many teams, that flip risk may be a manageable risk - and one that is chosen over risking an immediate Scholarship award
In a typical situation, if it possible to get a high potential recruit to join the program as a PWO, that is preferable.
Consider that a team is going to carry multiple kickers and multiple punters -
a. because injuries can occur
b. a succession plan is necessary because players graduate
c. kickers can just lose their touch like pitchers, golfers
d. even 'high potential' recruits can turn out to be a bust - a kid on a state champ team might look like a superstar - but maybe much of what he did was in no-pressure situations &/or with no threat of a block

Since scholarships are not in infinite supply (85) - many coaches prefer to maintain a position - that for kickers, they will be awarded based upon in-game high pressure collegiate accomplishment.
