This year it is what it is. Next year it will be about his commitment to the scheme and Archie. The only thing I find annoying is how kickoffs and punts are being fielded. They need to be coached up in judging distance and when it is appropriate to return and when to call a fair catch.

Some will tell you Nebraska isn't a place where coaches "learn" to coach. When you get here you should already know that.

Some will tell you Donnie wasn't qualified and should never got the job for that very reason. Same with the kid WR coach and the DL coach from last year.

3 years to learn in the job is something some would say SHOULDNT happen at Nebraska.

So far I really haven’t seen any difference between Maher and Ek. Ek made some overly aggressive calls a couple of times I thought. I’ll wait to judge. It might have made more sense to promote Ek’s other assistant to SC coordinator if we were staying in house.

I believe Maher had a full ride academic scholarship. I’m betting he can do the job.

Cunanon has shown he can't hit a far kick. Kicking is your only job and high school kids are making 50 yarders these days.

Our kicking and penalties on special teams are going to cost us a game or 2 this season if we don't make some changes.

You are not kidding about HS kickers. I was at a game last Friday where both kickers were booming their kicks. One kicker missed a 56 yard attempt to the right. Meanwhile we're paying a guy who has less range.

Koch was booming punts in pregame and at half. Wilson looked no better warming up than in the game. Yes, players can look different when it counts, but the eyeball test says Koch , at the very least, is not worse than Wilson.

Again, we couldn’t make an extra point when we nabbed Cunanan out of the portal. He’s golden from 40 in. I was wishing we had let Hohl try the second one from beyond 50. Cunanan must hit from 53-54 in practice or they wouldn’t have tried. Now they know what he has for future games.

Do you trust Maher or not? I choose to trust the guy who watches every kick in practice.

Well his Dad is the fricken Commissioner of Education. Brett Maher has been around teachers and good coaches since he was old enough to walk. I'm sure that the guy can coach. I'd rather have Maher take the job than some random guy we've never heard of who has had at least one good season in a row.

I'm no expert. But aren't rugby style kickers supposed to be able to kick away from the returners and get the ball bouncing? No returns, but a decent net? And then they are supposed to be able to kill it inside the 10?

I haven't watched closely, but I know a couple kicks Archie were shorter- under 40 yards in the air-- and fair caught. I wonder if teams are putting two returners back there (instead of one) in order to cover more territory and prevent Archie from getting a decent bounce and roll from his punts?

I think we're giving up 0.0 yards per return through three games with a pretty fair amount of fair catches. That counts for something.

You can’t say this because they aren’t returning them . If Archie kicks a 40 ydr with 0 return and Koch kicks 47 yder with a 8 yd return which is minimal. Which is a better result?

He kicked a 52 yder in KC last year against Cincinnati. But he has tried 2 this year from 50 plus . I agree in the next go around hopefully they give Hohl chance. Hopefully it’s at the end of the half and not a crucial point of the game.

That’s a good point.
And Archie seems like a great kid with a great story that made national headlines. Would you want to be the coach who benched the kid who is 9000 miles from home that everyone loves??
I want the kid to succeed. And he also needs to up his game because so far the results have not matched the hype that we hear from coaches (still waiting for Jeff Sims’ NFL pro career to begin)…

Last year was rough. Was Ek really as great as some think? Archie definitely struggled at times last fall. The guy the year before probably cost us a game with an awful punt to the wrong side of the field.

I think you may be right but what about when we are kicking from our own 25 and have enough room to flip the field. Is the 37 yd net worth it then? Random number...

Maybe Koch shanks every 7th punt in practices. How would that work from our own 25? Has Archie really had many or any opportunities to turn it loose this year?
