Kenny Payne is missed

[Big Blue Beast]

Was Kenny more important to these teams then we gave him credit?

[BlueBomb]

Yep. NEVER thought I’d miss a former UofL player.

[RunninRichie]

The assistants backpacked this program the first 5 years. Once coach O left we fell a little but once Payne left we fell off the bluff.

Wow. You really like Kenny Payne

its the only thing that makes sense. they can say it is because they didnt get to play in early games but these kids have been staying with each other and play ball all the time. I mean thats all they do, that is their life. Not the first time we had new kids. That is Kentucky basketball under Cal. I really starting to think that Kenny was the glue that go them to play hard.

I actually think the slide started when coach O left, now that coach Payne is gone

[Randy Bob]

K Payne was a good assistant wish he was our head coach today.

[StaticKat]

Kenny definitely brought a sense of calm self-assurance to the program!

[JohnBlue]

I think there is more to it than just Kenny. He also lost Dewayne Peevy which was basically his AD. They replaced Dewayne with a football guy so I'm not sure who within the program Cal turns to for guidance and advice.

[Yardeth]

He saw the writing on the wall.

I think cal had a really strong staff the first five years.
and they may have been doing more of the coaching and game prep
then any one realized.

[Doc4UK!]

That was the downfall of BILL CURRY when he came here from Alabama

[8titles_rivals270261]

This is a lot bigger issue than I think most people know. The dynamic between Cal and the assistants is not good. Been to multiple home games and was amazed at how little the in game coach. KP would constantly pull players aside and talk to them about what they were doing wrong. Not happening today. Also very little communication between cal and the assistant except Flint and maybe Barbee a little. He definitely needs help.

[ok-cats-computer]

Appeared to me that Kenny Payne was the “good cop” that would pull the players aside to reassure them and build their confidence after Cal would yell at them for mistakes in games. Some players need that positive pep talk to avoid dwelling on a mistake. Seems like we’re missing that this year.

[Blue Wildcat]

He is dearly, but Cal hasn’t done himself any favors hiring his failed buddies to help him. Think about this, a HOF coach who hasn’t developed another significant coach under his leadership.

He might be a better assistant than head guy...but who knows?
