They know their front court is garbage, and if Udoka goes down, who's already coming off an injury, they are F'd in the A.
Remind me which player joined Kentucky at mid-season in the Calipari era AND PLAYED? I may be blanking on someone but I hardly see this tactic as 'out of UK's playbook.' If you are talking about one guy - Diallo - joining the team but never playing, that's a pretty thin playbook.
