How much you want to bet Powell won't play at Kentucky? This. Powell won't play here. He's Allen 2.0 only Allen actually has shown the ability to score inside the arch.
He is a Kentucky kid and kyjeff says Cal won't recruit him because he is from Kentucky. He thinksNot sure why we want Powell so bad?
Well, they don't have to be nba good, but whoever Cal gets, needs to be a veteran and a couple clicks better than Askew.I just don’t see Cal getting the type of PG he needs in the transfer portal.
Guys like Abmas (spelling) probably head to the pros. If they are good enough to play PG for Cal they are at least good enough to make some money somewhere.
That’s the problem with this situation.
Until DJ Wagner is ready for college, I don’t know if there is anyone out there that we can get that can lead us to the promised land.
How much do you just want to shut up?How much you want to bet Powell won't play at Kentucky?
Whoa, where did I say that? Man, you really suck. Go back and read what I said, never did I say it was because he is from Kentucky. He is a Kentucky kid and kyjeff says Cal won't recruit him because he is from Kentucky. He thinks
Cal hates Kentucky kids.

No more freshman point guards

You need to look again. Don't just look at the numbers.
Keep in mind, Bruce Pearl plays a wide open, shoot first system, Allen would kill it in their system.
Watch this highlight clip. Powell had 9 assists. Every single one of them is from him just simply passing the ball from outside the arch to another player outside the arch that was wide open. Powell didn't even have to take a dribble, he just swung the ball. Count how many times he actually stepped inside the arch. He is a very poor fit here.
You tell me, is there a difference between Powell and Allen after watching this clip? Actually there is, Allen actually gets baskets in the paint. Powell will be picking splinters out of his *** here.

Cal played Allen in 1 or 2 minute spurts. The kid rarely got a chance to get into a flow. It's not fair to say he had bad shooting games ehen he wasn't allowed to play through it like BJB was.Yes, Dontaie did not play as much as he should have in the beginning. He deserved more of an opportunity than what he Initially had—that is entirely on Cal.
However, his shooting did digress some as the season went on, and even when he did play he wasn't hitting shots at the same rate he was and is capable of—that happens.
If he wasn’t hitting shots, then it became difficult to play him. Defensively he’s not atrocious, but he isn’t great, either. That was Cal’s biggest hesitation to play him, and rightfully so, because everyone could see the defensive lapses that occurred at times with Dontaie.
I am sure he will improve defensively, as well as, offensively.
If anything, his greatest contribution has been the potential enlightenment of Calipari and his potential realization that he needs to prioritize more shooters and greater skill, than athletes.
Will Cal adapt? That remains to be seen. I thought his final interview with Tom Leach was a candid conversation, and I still have faith he will do what is necessary.
In terms of Powell, bring him on! We can have multiple “Dontaie’s” at the same position. You want several guys that can shoot and knockdown shots.
It helps space the floor, and it helps mitigate an “off night” in case someone else isn’t shooting well during any given game.
You can do this in a modern offense.
However, you can’t do that today with multiple “big men” who can’t shoot. That’s when you have no offense, as we have all seen, because opponents will pack it in down around the block and high-post.
Also, we know we need a true PG on the roster next year, no one is denying that.
But, we also need shooters, especially at guard/wing with size, which is what Justin Powell brings.
And, besides, who doesn’t love another kid from Kentucky on scholarship?!
Oh I'm not saying he's a pg, I'm saying he's another Dontae Allen.delete b4 Leadbelly sees this
he’s not a PG watch him against memphis he can get into the lane. What’s funny is he was never billed as a shooter. This guy will be a good get. But, he’s not a PG that’s probably why he’s transferring.
i’d take another DA.Oh I'm not saying he's a pg, I'm saying he's another Dontae Allen.
I just think we have other needs that are more important.i’d take another DA.
I would just rather see Mintz at the 2.The “couple clicks better better than Askew” part sounds like Mintz.
If we are just looking for someone to take care of the ball, shoot at a decent clip, and play defense, what is wrong with Mintz?
And more importantly who is better that is realistic for us next year?
Hey @JohnBlue_ this dude refuses to stop trolling. He's an absolute pest on this board. You've already warned him once and he hasn't changed.Does Cal own your house or something else eating you?
He can shoot.. have you checked out his stats for the games he played and he was also playing out of position.Cal played Allen in 1 or 2 minute spurts. The kid rarely got a chance to get into a flow. It's not fair to say he had bad shooting games ehen he wasn't allowed to play through it like BJB was.
But talking about Allen's shooting is crazy when you look at what Boston was allowed to do all season. Boston consistently went 4-13, 3-12, 4-14 etc… , but he got 30mpg.
And this crap about Allen not being able to defend as the reason for not playing, is crap. Boston got punked on defense too.
But here's the thing, we all know Allen is not a 30mpg player, all we wanted was 15 minutes or so. If he's hot, play him until he drops, but Cal sat his *** in favor of a garbage AAU player that didn't care if UK won or lost.
I want Powell here too, but I don't want him here if he's just going to sit. I don't think he fits with what Cal does at all. I think he's a terrible fit here.
Honestly, I think there will be better 2 guards available. Guys that will fit with Cal's system. Powell is a 1 dimensional player, he's not what everyone thinks he is.
I would just rather see Mintz at the 2.
Look, this is UK, you can't tell me we can't find a point guard that is a point guard.
You mean to tell me Louisville, who has been in scandal after scandal and has its head on a chopping block, can go out and get a Carlik Jones and we are stuck with a shooting guard as our only option? No way. There will be much better options.
Dude, I'm not saying he can't shoot. You are obviously not reading what I'm saying. He can shoot.. have you checked out his stats for the games he played and he was also playing out of position.
Powell was playing Pg most games waiting for Cooper to be eligible.
NBA draft boards had him in first round before his concussion next year so maybe some of you know it all’s need to check out some facts before you post.
Cal needs to get Mintz to return first and foremost. If he can't get an elite point guard in here, then he needs to go with Mintz, but the ideal thing to happen is for Cal to find an elite pg and Mintz start at the 2.I’m not sure Jones would have been much better than Mintz in Cal’s system.
Also, Mintz never got a fair shake at PG. Not saying he would have led us to the FF, but we would have been much better with him at PG all season.
Bottom line: I agree that Cal needs an upgrade over Mintz and Askew at PG to be successful running his system. I just don’t know if that guy is 1. out there and 2. wants to play here.
Also, I think Mintz could be successful in the right system. He doesn’t turn it over. He is a good passer. He shoots at a good clip. And he plays decent defense. Some coaches will take that all day long from a PG.
I think point is likely his best position, and court vision perhaps his best trait. That's why I said in the post he isn't a true PG and doesn't have elite court vision.
Anton here actually FiesLOL. I went to grade school and middle school in powderly. Other than Mberg cat, didn't think anyone else had heard of it.
Yeah, that is what I think is the most important thing for us next year. Mintz at the 1 from the get go. All that experience and being a good all around player, no way a frosh comes in and does close to what he would give us.Cal needs to get Mintz to return first and foremost. If he can't get an elite point guard in here, then he needs to go with Mintz, but the ideal thing to happen is for Cal to find an elite pg and Mintz start at the 2.
Under no circumstances should Askew get more than 10 minutes at any position next year, especially at point.
But after the season we just had, Cal needs to do everything in his power to get a legit UK level roster in here.
There are two positions on a Cal coached team (on any contending roster actually) where you have to have elite players, point guard and at the 4/5 spots. I think Collins and Oscar will give us what we need down low. I think Toppin, Brooks, Mintz and Allen give us a hell of a core, but there needs to be an elite addition at point guard. Now is not the time to gamble. Put Mintz at the 1 to spell the main pg, but Mintz shouldn't be our #1 pg… in my opinion anyway.
As I said earlier, Pearl has hlm also run the Point waiting for Cooper to get Eligible and he played pretty well.Dude, I'm not saying he can't shoot. You are obviously not reading what I'm saying.
He's an elite shooter, but that's all he is. I have literally said he's Dontae Allen 2.0 several times.
Just remember who coaches UK and what that coach did to Allen this year.

I don't think Cal hates Kentucky kids. He just likes 5-stars better even if they are not playing as good as a Kentucky kid. Maybe he plays players like NBA teams draft....based on 'potential.'He is a Kentucky kid and kyjeff says Cal won't recruit him because he is from Kentucky. He thinks
Cal hates Kentucky kids.
In Pearl's system, Dontae would play very well. Pearl doesn’t play favorites and he doesn't play guys for draft stock purposes. As I said earlier, Pearl has hlm also run the Point waiting for Cooper to get Eligible and he played pretty well.
Not sure Dontae could have pulled that off.
Either way. The kid can play. He is not one dimensional.

ESPN had Powell as a 4 star.. so, not too bad.I don't really get where the "Cal is against Kentucky kids." conspiracy theories comes from.
Pretty sure the real issue (and valid criticism) with Cal is his apparent lack of faith (and seemingly short-leash) with players who weren't highly-rated recruits out of high school to be able to stay on the floor at Kentucky.
Does anyone honestly think that barring a kid having obvious character flaws/sketchy handlers, that if a Top-10 Nationally Ranked 5-Star Player out of Kentucky pops up on the radar that Cal will just go
"lol, nope. Don't want any of them Kentucky kids."?
In Pearl's system, Dontae would play very well. Pearl doesn’t play favorites and he doesn't play guys for draft stock purposes.
It’s unfortunate for Allen that Boston was on this team and Calipari is the coach.
But lets not get carried away on Powell playing pg for Auburn, they were awful before Cooper became eligible. I wouldn’t form my "Powell is great" argument on that. Also, I posted a video showing his game angainst South Alabama where he had 9 assists, but all 9 assists were simple passes to guys just standing there wide open, it's not like he had a Chris Paul-ish effort.
ESPN had Powell as a 4 star.. so, not too bad.
I have no narrative, I'm just stating what I have seen. Show me a clip that proves he's this great 2G. I just see him taking jump shots and whipping the ball out to wide open shooters. I'm also saying what is very obvious, Cal is our coach and Powell is not a good fit for Cal.Powell did not only play against South Alabama.. but , whatever fits your narrative.
I will go with the NBA draft board that had him as a top 20 pick going into next seasons draft.
he's just being foolishHe is a Kentucky kid and kyjeff says Cal won't recruit him because he is from Kentucky. He thinks
Cal hates Kentucky kids.
Who, the guy that actually didn't say those things?he's just being foolish
The kid has a whole lot better handles then DA and got by his man in the few games he did play last year. Could get by with him at the 2 and DA at the 3 with a fast PG then we have options.Dude, I'm not saying he can't shoot. You are obviously not reading what I'm saying.
He's an elite shooter, but that's all he is. I have literally said he's Dontae Allen 2.0 several times.

Except, you're the fool that believed what KL posted. I never said anything about Powell being from Kentucky. The guy is a complete fool.
