I never saw anyone berating the kid as you claim. I saw everyone moaning at Cal for shoving him in there when he hadn't proven worthy of a starting spot on this team.
And don’t give me the “well looks like Cal was right and knows what he was doing” bologna. I’m happy for Kentucky and Edwards that he had this break out, but I’m also hesitant to jump on the overly excited boat because I know Bama is a horrible defensive team. We need at least half of that Edwards (and Z) outburst against a team or two that plays hard nosed defense. Then I’ll be 100% sold that the Edwards we expected to see has finally arrived for good.
Well, I think the problem for some that leads to a lot of the frustration is the expectations. I thought Edwards would be better than he has played, but I didn’t expect anything dominant at all. I also figured if Edwards was made UK’s go to guy we would fail miserably. At the same time, I thought – and think – Edwards is a really good freshman player. Those two things are not contradictory. That’s the norm with players good enough to contribute, even start, as freshmen. They are best as role players, not the guy you rely on for consistency and to lead your team.
Matt Jones is a very smart guy. But one thing he constantly says that strikes me as so unaware (and evidences such a blind spot) is when he’s arguing or suggesting that a particular freshman should be drastically better and says something along the lines of: So-and-so “is the #1 player in the Country” – and he says it with great emphasis, as if that statement is really supposed to say it all right there; no explanation needed. But all it says is that he doesn’t understand himself (or doesn’t want to acknowledge) what that ranking meant. He never qualifies that what the player actually was, was the #1 ranked high school player by a recruiting service – a recruiting service ranking players on their potential draft position and/or their potential as an NBA player in a few years. Why would anyone think that means the freshman should be expected to be the best player in CBB – or even one of the best players in CBB? I doubt that anyone that has played a lot of basketball or been a long time CBB fan would ever expect that freshman to be the best player in CBB based on his recruiting ranking or anything else. In fact, I think they would be quite surprised if not out-right shocked if that turned out to be true.
Same thing basically with the mock drafts – e.g., the statement “UK has 3 draft picks” thrown out as a criticism like we’re all supposed to know what that means. But if you pay attention, they never actually state what that is supposed to mean. The reason is they don’t know themselves exactly what it is supposed to mean even to them. To me what it means is the NBA thinks that player has the potential (there’s that word again) to
eventually be an impactful player in the NBA. I believe NBA teams absolutely would draft the #1 ranked 8th grader if they could, based on POTENTIAL.
So, I think frustration with, and criticism of, recruits would go way down if expectations stopped be based on a false narrative.
