This is the reality now. Two, and ONLY two, things matter...playing for a conf. championship and playing in the CFP. All else is meaningless in the global scheme.

Some will inevitably come here and try to argue the importance of things like winning on the west coast, beating a ranked team, keeping a rivalry trophy, going to a bowl game, etc. Those things matter only to the tiny subset of fans, media and others who myopically follow Iowa football.

They wouldn't even be miniscule blips on the greater CFB radar, precisely because they would not be precursors to the only two things that truly matter in the sport now.
So basically what you're saying is you, and the OP and everyone agreeing with the OP are out on the rest of the season.

If they go 6-6 or 10-3, it does nothing for you, because the playoff is the only thing you care about and because they're out, you'll move on to basketball season, correct?

Just clarifying where you actually stand so we don't create any hypocrites here among the fanbase....................

No half in either. No "I'll be musings watch from afar if they keep winning".

It's a yes or no deal. In or out.

Sounds like you guys are out.

2 more losses isn't happening. Until Nebraska proves it can stop stealing defeat from the jaws of victory that game is a W. MSU is no world beater and it's at home. Next week is the only potential loss in my opinion.
Nebraska has fielded some really bad teams and we’ve just barely squeeked by most years.

It’s definitely a potential loss even considering they are now with a backup QB.

You're failing to separate "interesting" and "worth watching" for an individual fan/fan base from "meaningful" to the college football world in the grand scheme of the 2025 season. Ol' Doodle thought he was pretty clear on that point in several posts. Beating USC is still better than losing to them. Beating Nebraska is still better than losing to them. Winning 7 or 8 or 9 games is still better than winning 6. But it is not meaningful for THIS SEASON now that we're in the CFP era.

It's a little like a TV series that you're really into, where you've already seen the season finale but there were three episodes you missed earlier. You'll watch them anyway, just because it's still interesting to you and you want to see what happened. But they carry zero drama or intrigue because you already know how the story arc concludes.

Just like in basketball where the NCAA tournament is “king,” football now has the 12-team playoff - The rest does not matter.

A 10-win team in a non-playoff bowl game will be equally uninteresting (Irrelevant may be a better word) to watch post-season as the 6-win team in their bowl. Why? B/c it is NOT a playoff game. This is where we’re at.

This team is relevant to me. The next three games are important to me and the bowl game will be important to me.

I like this team. They're not a great team, but they are a good one. They're a top 25 team which means they are better than 100+ other teams in the FBS.

Sure, I want them to be better and win more of these big games. But I'm not going to give up on them because they haven't.

I brought it up in another thread but it bares repeating, with as much as QB’s cost I’d rather they roll with Hecklinski or Brown next year and make bigger upgrades to rest of the roster.
We won’t because Kirk will want to lean into lack of experience next year

Agree with your 1st paragraph, but not the second. The CF world may not care about the remaining games, but I do. There is plenty of drama remaining for me.

It would be more interesting if Iowa would open up the offense more

seeing 55 runs of 4-5 yards might be interesting to some, but it makes for a boring watch. If iowa catches lightning in a bottle like they did against MN, great!

but let’s open things up and show teams and recruits that WR do exist

Appealing to wide receivers would be nice for sure. But Ol' Doodle was overjoyed to finally see some evidence that we still have tight ends on the roster!

It may be important to YOU, sure.

But they’re not relevant to the main conversation - The Playoff.

And what is the goal? To be included in the “main conversation.” Just like in basketball where almost no one cares what the hell the NIT has to offer.

“The NIT is on TV tonight? I had no idea.”

Right, they're not going to make the playoffs. They aren't part of the national conversation. Agreed.

But, I don't agree with the comparison to the NIT.

The Big Ten west gave KF a chance year after year. It was a gift, and his feminine persona couldn't rise to the occasion.
And he is NOT retiring. Nope. Beth firing Brain means we get to sit back and watch a decade-long revenge tour. Saban and Stoops retired with class. We're stuck with Paterno 2.0

the CFP is a nice get for KF but in his world a good regular bowl game is the goal. He thinks like some of these fans. Iowa never will compete for championships like OSU and Michigan

It’s all exhibition from here on out. Our remaining games are as important as a birth in the Alamo Bowl. Anyone with NFL aspirations might as well sit out now and start preparing for the draft.

At least a more appropriate post. As for the three guys who liked your post that is NOT what they said earlier. They said they were out. And I'd still say those games ARE meaningful. It may not matter to you, but it sure as hell matters to those in the football complex, and frankly to everyone still in the CFP. Is it not meaningful to the results of the CFP if we lay down against USC or if we rose up and beat them? My take is as a fan, if I really do care about the team and coaches, the I should support them as long as they are giving their 100% full effort. Thats what I saw again yesterday, maybe you disagree. By example it was understandable to bale to some degree on last years mens basketball team when it became obvious that the coach and some of the players were either disinterested, or had just moved on. Thats not whats going on at kinnick. Basically for some here only those teams who win 10, 11, 12 games are worthy of being supported by the fan base. I guess thats what this whole "pay for play" thing has got is, and its really sad indeed.

Continuing to practice, coach, play the games, etc. is what teams do because it's what teams are obligated to do. For the team/program, sticking to that process is meaningful. For select players, especially those who have next-level aspirations, that is meaningful. But continuing to try, continuing to win, etc. doesn't make all of that stuff "meaningful" in the big picture of CFB once conf. championship and/or CFP are out of reach.

Beating USC next week, MSU the following week, Nebby on Black Friday, and some other also ran in a half-empty bowl venue with 1/3 of each team sitting out, would be better than the alternative (a.k.a. losing). But that doesn't make it meaningful in the context of what really matters in the sport today.

This is just the reality of CFB now.
It’s kind of been the reality of football for a long time. We look back fondly as fans but does beating Mississippi St in the Outback bowl in a 1/3 full venue ever account for much? It does for us as we love our team but even before the playoffs these games haven’t meant much.

Correct, unfortunately. There was a better chance of beating Oregon at Kinnick than USC in the Coliseum.

I hate these new conferences.
I actually love the new conference. Was yesterday not an incredible game and atmosphere? We were playing a top 10 team in Kinnick with a national reputation. Would you rather be playing 2-7 Purdue? And I can’t wait to see the boys go out to Cali next week and play the Trojans.

Look, we all want a better passing game. But do you think if Gronowski would have passed it 25 times yesterday (or any game honestly) we would have a better chance of winning? Receivers are by far the worst part of our team. And honestly our QB is not very accurate. Oregon came out yesterday and passed it 3 times in a row unsuccessfully and then decided to run run run. And guess what? It worked.

I disagree. Iowa plays USC in a game that might keep USC out of the playoffs. Then the Hawks play Nebraska on Black Friday in nationally televised game. I think the interest and viewership in those two games will be bigger than any NIT game.

The Hawks have a lot to play for.

So you don’t think the coaches and players were trying to make the CFP this year?

When they narrowly lost to 2 top 10 teams in the final seconds, they were just content with going to a bowl game?

They are getting closer every game/every season. The needed pieces are in place now with TL and PP.

It didn’t quite happen this year, but not from a lack of effort. There is no one associated with this program that is not aspiring for Championship results.

Now you, you’re just a bum lashing out from his couch when adversity hits.

But the USC game matters ONLY to USC and anyone else still competing with them for a potential at large CFP bid. It is not meaningful to the outcome of IOWA's 2025 season. The end result of IOWA's 2025 season, whether we go 3-0, 0-3, or something in between down the stretch is now set in stone; a bowl game. It's still, of course, preferable to go 3-0. But it makes no material difference in how the story of IOWA's 2025 season ends. That's it. That's our ceiling as of around 6 p.m. yesterday. Bowl game.

Iowa's games will always matter to IOWA fans...regardless of record or circumstances. But for the 2025 season we have officially exited the national stage and the big picture conversation. Acknowledging that is not "abandoning the team" or "not being a good fan" or "not supporting the players". It's simply recognizing and accepting the reality of what CFB is now.

This team has lost to two of the best teams in the country in heartbreaking fashion yes. But they gave them everything they had and I know there are no moral victories but this is a great team that with a few breaks they would be 9 and 1. No moral victories I know but ******** these guys fight and can play with anyone
Iowa easily could be, and it would be easy to argue they should be, 9-0. No excuse for losing at ISU again. They had Indiana but missed on an easy third down play and then missed a routine FG. And, of course, Iowa goes 92 freakin' yards for what should have been a game-winning TD yesterday, only to miss on yet ANOTHER 2-pt. try and then, AGAIN, to fail to get a defensive stop in the waning moments. '

Like many on this board, I've been an Iowa fan for decades, and there have been some great individual game victories, but there have been few seasons that turned out as well as they should have. This is just one more, but man, I gotta be honest. This one really, really, really hurts. I can't even imagine how the players feel. Soooo close all season. One last chance at the CFP, and it slips away too . . .

Not bringing in a transfer LB was a big problem. DL has their issues but LB play has been well below Iowa needed output. TE has been a hole as well this season. Iowa could really use a run stuffing DT. These issues get exposed against top 25 teams.

Next year QB, OL, DL, LB, and DB could all be what holds Iowa back. You have to start beating top 25 teams. Iowa can't develop players fast enough to fill holes in what is needed in this era.
Iowa isn't perfect. They do have some weak spots, but look at the reality: Iowa led Oregon with less than 2 minutes to play. It was Iowa's game to win, regardless of the weaknesses you've noted. Same with Indiana.

The bowl games used to give us a little hope and insight into the potential for next years team.

Now that Kirk has destroyed the offense we can spend millions on a new QB and get the same lame results against ranked teams. Glad we piss pounded MN and WI, but we aren’t seeing drastic improvements. There’s been some, specifically the OL has finally looked its part

But we really lack any passing game and we can’t get over hump

It’s not so much opening up the passing game with MG….its the frustration that we’ve gone about a decade without having a competent QB and playcaller

we really have no idea what Lester passing scheme is because he has to abandon it with noodle arm QBs

But even with great QBs like CJB, we still play uber conservative because our head coach believes 3 yard runs, punts, and hopes for special teams magic is the only way Iowa can win

going forward, just say **** it and let the players play

this won’t happen tho :-(
